Back to the Cafe after, for breakfast. Dozens of other runners for company. * A WORD OF ADVICE * If you decide to run with any of these groups, please spend a minute or two of your time BEFORE YOU START to find out the DISTANCE and PACE of any group of runners. There is probably nothing worse for a beginner than to be left behind after the first 500 metres, or to struggle to run beyond what is sensible for your present level of training. If in doubt, start by running with the slowest group available. You can always graduate to longer/faster runs as your fitness improves.

S I G N E D ...... DATE. (♦Complete if applicable) THE COST OF YOUR SPORT IS LARGELY IN YOUR HANDS ! If anyone suggested that in a community of ever increasing costs sport can be exempted, that person would be greeted with hollow Iaughter,caI Ied a fool or probably declared insane. However, habits being rather strong, many people take a long time to re-adjust to this fact of life,as various increases in the cost of living creep up most unevenly over the many items we have to come regard as necessities of life, our life as sportsmen and women anyway. In larger clubs and organisations such as ours,we need - NO , DEPEND ! - on input by un-paid and under-paid administrators and officials as well asvoluntary assistance of many kinds from the bulk of the general membership to maintain our activities in a way which will satisfy the aims of the Club. Our Club has over the years, based on experience of over 40 years, developed various means and systems to cope with this problem and changes as they took pi ace.Unless we,and that is the whole of our membership, are conscious of staying cost-effective it will be no use of complaining about about increasing costs.Let's have a look at some of the factors applying to a club of 720 members. Let us assume that Administrative Secretarial Services - pIanning, costing, records, banking, public relations,etc.,etc.- are charged at a bare minmum of $10 per hour. Let us also assume that we are efficient enough to keep the multitude of expenses at a bare minimum. Our basis are such costs in early 1987. ... .nr, 1 p.100 p.100 ITEM SERVICE TIME COST TIME COST EXTENSION Processing per enveIope(address) 3 mins -.50 5 Hrs 50.- Processing address labels 6 " 1.00 10 " 100.- Yearly cost address labels -.05 5.- Mailing per envelope(plus postage) -.40 40.- The above items are things that every member is involved with at least once during a full year,pi us entry procedures for various special events. Over one third of the membership fail to renew on time and are sent a reminder letter, another cost to the whole Club.Close to 200 do not fill in labels.Hundreds send in requests for information, entry forms and other items WITHOUT INCLUDING a Stamped Self Addressed Envelope. You are invited to use the EXTENSION column above to make your own calculations how much of the costs are expenses that could have been avoided! Just a finaI thought: - The time alone that is involved in anything that is purely routine takes away from the time that is available to your experienced officials for efficient utilisation of their organisational expertise.Putting it into simple English: You are wasting the skills of the people you have elected to run the Club efficiently, give them the time needed to do so ! *************************************************************************************

Controversy surrounded the distance of this marathon. Just how far is it? All runners who had competed in one of the prior three stagings of the event had an opinion, but few could agree. The race organisers would prefer not to know, confident that it was close enough to the official marathon distance to be classed as one. However, curiosity got the better of a number of people so Big Chris Stephenson chugged along at the rear of the field with a measuring wheel. Chris also acted as a sweeper to marshall any runners experiencing difficulty (last year there were plenty in the 40°C heat) and so he adjusted his pace to finish just inside the official cut-off time of 8 hours. The result? - well the course was measured at 46km - strictly an ultra but the organisers will continue to call it a marathon.

So why 8 hours cut-off time for a marathon? Well, the Six Foot Track race is one of the toughest marathons you are likely to experience anywhere in the world. Incidentally, the Six Foot Track was constructed in 1884 as a bridle path, from the Explorer's Marked Tree at Katoomba through to Jenolan Caves, a distance of approximately 26 miles, to short cut the 50 mile road journey. To start with, there is a steep drop of 500 metres in about 3km. (If you don't sprain your ankle in this mountain goat terrain, then overworked quadracept muscles will be nicely set to give trouble in the latter stages of the race). Next comes about 8km of easy undulating running with the odd gate and fence stile to negotiate as the track largely passes through private land. At this point, friends and helpers can watch you cross Megalong Road where you still look amazingly fresh and wonder why this marathon is considered so tough. Another 8km of fairly narrow, sometimes rocky, track which slopes mostly downhill ends at the lowest point of the race at Coxes River. Still easy - so what's the fuss? Water, barley water and fruit can be had at an aid station here and many runners take a break to pour the water out of their shoes from the almost waist high crossing of Coxes River.

The Bush Fire Brigade did a marvellous job in getting to remote sections of the track so that we didn't have to go too far without at least access to water. Most streams we crossed are heavily polluted and so with a warm sunny day (not 40°C like last year) frequent aid stations became very necessary. Runners started to bunch up at, and just after, Coxes River with those who had not conserved energy within their own capability beginning to drop back through the field.

The real trial began just after Coxes River with about 700m unrelenting climb, followed by about 500m drop, followed by about 800m unrelenting climb. All this in only about 7km of running (walking, staggering?). In the middle was a section of several hundred metres where scores of Bellbirds chirped merrily away. Such beautiful sounds, some very close, some distant, gave all runners a lift in spirits.

At the top of the second climb, many runners struggled to keep up a good pace on a nice and easy undulating bush fire track. "Small" hills which rose only a few metres in 100m slowed some runners to a walk. Just 7km of this terrain brought us out onto the Jenolan Caves Road. Spirits lifted at this point because we knew the- end was in sight (and achievable).

About 6km of undulations (larger than previous sections) were unremarkable. Then the last 7km saw us back on the track, somewhat flat at first but the last 3km were very steep downhill right to Caves House.

What a thrill it was to see Caves House come rushing up to meet you as you tried to go flat out downhill on legs screaming out in pain. A large group gathered at the entrance to Caves House applauded each runner as they finished. It seemed as time went by, the applause became louder and more enthusiastic so that there is merit in taking your time and finishing well down the list.

Race organiser Ian Hutchison together with sponsors Blue Mountains Echo Newspaper, Commonwealth Bank, Blue Mountains City Council and Oberon Shire Council are to be congratulated on a fine and exciting event. Thanks also for the billy tea and damper at the Explorers Marked Tree prior to race start. Last years winner Matthew Cull, seeded second this year due to the entry of N.S.W. State Marathon Champion Steve Montague, was able to pass Steve in the closing stages of the race to record a large reduction in the course record.

AUSTRALIANULTRA RUNNERS' ASSOCIATION

Over the past few years, the ultra running scene has really taken-off in Australia. Cliff Young was probably more responsible than any other person or event for the upsurge in interest. His fantastic effort in winning the Westfield Sydney to Melbourne Run in 1983 gave ultra running its greatest impetous. Not only did he beat many younger, faster opponents, he did it on only a few hours sleep and with his innocent one-liners won the hearts of all onlookers.

Many runners are now challenging the battle with the mind (for that is what ultra running is mostly about - being able to mentally apply oneself through long and arduous physical efforts). The majority find the effort truly rewarding and set about planning bigger and more ambitious challenges, to attempt to grasp that mystical presence - "A.U.R.A."

To service the common interest and bond between ultra runners, as well as other interested people i.e. race organisers, friends, relatives and curious bystanders, the Australian Ultra Runners' Association was formed last year. AURA currently has 120 members throughout Australia and lists 2A ultra races in its calendar.

If you wish to join this "prestigious and interesting" association, to keep abreast of news and rankings (remember you don’t have to be an ultra runner to join), just apply to Dot Browne, Secretary, A Victory Street, Mitcham 3132, Ph: (03) 8742501, for an application form (current membership costs only $8).

V.M.C.NEWSLETTER WINTER 1987 JUNE VOL. 19 No. 2 STAWELL,AN "AMATEUR'S EXPERIENCE” WITH A "PROFESSIONAL"APPROACH. Malcolm Norwood.

I was brought up in a small country town,Echuca, which boasted two of Australia's top professional runners,Brian O'Neil and Graham WiI Iiams.Becoming close friend & trai ning partner of Graham(Jock) I was led to believe that the ultimate ambition of a Pro-runner was to compete in the StawelI athletic carnival.I was constantly hearing comparisons between pros/amateurs such as the suggestion that were pro's to compete in the Olympic Games Australia would find itself picking up a few more gold medals. So,with the amalgamation of pro's and amateurs I thought it would be a good oppor tunity for amateurs to compete against pro's and prove their supremacy. When conside ring this and other influences such as my wife expecting our first baby shortly and the money would be handy. I'd heard a lot about the great atmosphere brought about by 10 to 12 thousand strong crowd.Proving to myself that I could set myself up in peak condition for a race and produce the performance on the day and finally salvage something from a disappointing season which was plagued with niggling injuries. So,I decided that the StawelI meet would be a great place to compete. I arrived at the track mid-day,aI ready the crowd was around 6 to 7,000 and this was not the main day.Prior to my race the bookies placed me at odds of 4/1 with Lynch being heavily backed as favourite at odds of 2/1. Training form indicated I was in P.B. shape(3:43.7)and with Peter Bourke withdrawing I was fairly conrident of winning. However, the only doubt in my mind was Lynch.I knew his P.B. for the mile was 4:02,which is appr.3:45plus for 1500m.I had seen him at training(0lympic Park),he appeared to be running strongly and with him being 45m in front of me I was giving him 8-9 seconds advantage which meant 3:38 or better to win if he ran up to his P.B.time. After the race result,it seemed to confirm rumours that the handicapping was designed so that no amateur would win,if he did he'd have to run well under his P.B. on a grass track. After my training partner,Barry Greig, placed second in a brilliantly run race I was pumped up for a big effort, determined to win.The crowd was the biggest for a Saturday and was buzzing in anticipation of a close & exciting race.Ron Brinkert(my coach) told me to control my first lap, which I did, going through in 59 sec, then 1:58 at 800m. With 450m to go I passed Lynch moving up into 7th place or so,stiI I 35m down on the front marker running the race of his life.Lynch had been running easiIy,taking his time, conserving as much energy as possible, knowing he had the front marker well covered because of his 65m handicap. He followed me as I passed until 300m to go where he kicked very quickly taking me by surprise and opening up 3 to 4 metre gap.I didn't panic because I knew the last 120m was uphill and I thought he'd made his move too early. With 100m left I'd nearly closed the gap when Lynch accelerated once again.I couldn't match the effort and tightened up over the last 60m. Unfortunetely, the effort required to catch the leaders from my handicap of 20m took ita tolI.Lynch, with his generous handicap, was still feeling fresh because he didn't have to push himself in the early stages of the race and had plenty in reserve when he sprinted home to win in 3:36.6 with nyself a close third in 3:38.9.1 ran a P.B. of 3:41.8 for the total distance. Lynch was now firm favourite for the 2 miles with an unbelievable handicap of 90m! I felt the handicapping was very unfair, not j'ust to me but the other runners who weren't as good as Lynch and only been given a 10m advantage with others even behind him! It j'ust didn't make sense. My only hope was that Lynch would sit in with the leaders and go 1200m to 800m from home.If he did this I'd be able to catch him before the final lap and make a race of it. With the handicapping making things impossible for most of the amateurs competing,I became very determined to win and upstage their system.I remebered Lynch's smug remark prior to the 1500m,he greeted me with a strong handshake and said:"Weicome to the Pros".With this at the back of my mind,I said to myself:"You're going to win". V.M.C.NEWSLETTER WINTER 1987 JUNE VOL.19 No. 2 The 1500m was my first serious race on the track since the Victorian titles in the middle of February,so I knew I only tightened up due to lack of racing and it would not happen in my next race. By Monday the weather was a lot cooler with quite a strong wind blowing in the back straight.I lined up alongside Mark Boucher, who earlier had agreed to take the first 800m.A huge crowd surrounded the track anticipating another close and exciting race between myself and Lynch. The first two laps went according to schedule with myself taling over the running after 900m from Boucher.with plenty of encouragement from the crowd.I felt relaxed and strong, catching Lynch with 800m remaining,Iynch in the lead since 1200m from home after sitting with the leaders. Immediately I moved to the front applying pressure on Lynch. As I passed Lynch,he was struggling to pick up his tempo and I sensed a slight gap had opened up.This gave me plenty of encouragement and I maintained the pressure.By the bell lap he was back on my shoulder and the crowd was on their feet yelling excitedly.I kept up the tempo, still feeling very comfortable and waited for Lynch to make a move, which I was ex pecting with 300m to go.Unfortunately for Lynch,he didn't let me down.As we swung into the back straight he kicked,I was concentrating well and reacted quickly holding him off but at the same time not going flat out.I was doing justenough to hold him on my shoulder. I felt great, the arms were pumping strongly as I felt Lynch ease off.Halfway along the back straight I eased off slightly too,not wanting to give it all until the last 80 to 120m.Lynch kicked again just before entering the end straight, once again I accelerated just enough to hold him off.We maintained- this pace until 80m to go,the I made my move, accelerating into the main straight. To my relief lynch had no answer and I crossed the finish line winning comfortably in a time of 8:.3,a new P.B. for 2 miles and an Australian Professional Record.Later I was informed that I went through the 3km in 7:59 pI us. I was very pleased with my performance, especiaI Iy knowing i'd still had a couple of seconds up my sleeve during the middle of the race.I'I I be back again next year,no matter what my handicap, because it's a great weekend and a fantastic racing atmosphere!

VOL.19 No. Robin Rishwor+h. |ln September last year I won the Keysborough Mini-Marathon(28.3km)and the prize was a 16 day "Burke & Wills" camping safari with Australian Pacific. Each morning of the trip I endeavoured to try and fit in a 40 minute jog before the bus departed.I found to do this I had to miss breakfast and some of the packing up. I experienced running through a great variety of outback terrain, ranging from the irrigated areas of Leeton and Mildura, the vast barren Stuart Highway ay Port Augusta and the Oodnadatta track at Coober Pedy to the harsh red soils of the Olgas and Ayers Rock. The latter took 14j minutes to ascend the mile to the summit and 10 mins to the base.On several occasions I used the chain to steady myself. Two days later I ran in the Alice Springs Marathon which commenced at 6 am to avoid the heat. The course was an out and back one that headed west towards Stanley Chasm and Simpsons Gap.The first seven kms were run in the dark. Each km was accurately painted on the bitumen road and drinks were provided every 4km.The silver ghost gums and the bright red rocks of the West McDonnell ranges provided plenty of oportunities to take my mind off the run.By 8am the tour coaches were heading west in a steady stream and it was warming up but there was no humidity like that which is present in the coastal cities. I crossed the line in 2 hrs 38 min 52 sec just ahead of 'consistent local performer' Terry Bell 2:41:05.Bill butler was third and first Veteran in 2:49.Kristina Gamlen, another local, was fifth overall and first female in 3:29,out of 34 starters and 10 finishers.Every finisher was a winner, there was a good massage by some of the attrac tive locals,a finshers' medal,a spa,a feast of food arid drink,a presentation and a video of the run. FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL RUNNING ORGAN I SAT IONS,we draw their attention to a circular issued by the AUSTRALIAN SPORTS MEDICINE FEDERATION Victorian branch on the subject of 'Children and Long Distance Running'.The main points are: Recommended Maximum Competitive Distance: u.12 - 5km; u.15 - 10km; 15/16 - j Marathon; 17/18 - 30km; 18+ - Marathon. Recommended weekly maximum training distance: 3x Competiton distance. Children know to be physically immature for their age should be limited to the maximum recommended distance for the age group below their own. BODIES INTERESTED in the full text of the Ietter, containing considerations and rationale in respect physicaI,neurological and sociological aspects can obtain copies from the Editor,VMC Newsletter,! Golding St.,CANTERBURY 3126,Victoria by sending $2 with request. For a club the size of ours,721 showing on our books,it was disappointing to have only 15 members attending as this is one of the very few opportunities we have to debate and exchange ideas and opinions without having the pressure of racing on us. President,BiI I Luke, had little trouble in dealing with proceedings and enables all present to finish with the meeting early and then partake of the refreshment pro vided and talk informally . Election of Office Bearers resulted in the following being elected, portfolios are given in brackets: President: BILL LUKE ;Vice-Presidents:DOT BROWNE(SociaI,Communications)-RAYDN NOLAN (Promotions)-GEOFF HOOK(Ultra-Distance) ;Gen♦Secretary:FRED LESTER ;Gen.Treasurer: GEORGE THOMAS ;Asst,Secretary:JANET O'DELL(Co,pet it ion) ;Asst♦Secretary:J IM GOOK (Membership) ;Asst.Treasurer:MAL COTHER(Sales). Committee Members:TERRY 0'HALLORAN(Media)-NEIL RYAN(Sponsorship)-PETER NELSON(Techn) MICK WHITEOAK(Personnel,UItras)-NOEL PH ILPOTT(PubIicity) In addition PETER LARK INS(Hon.MedicaI Officer) & TOM YUNCKEN(Hon.LegaI Councel) were appointed;KEVIN SOLOMON & GRAEME SALTHOUSE were again prepared to be Auditors. THE COMMITTE had put forward for LES PERRY to be elected Lifemember of the VMC in view of his past role of promoting the Club and Australian Distance running in the 40's and 501s.In that period Les held many distance running titles and records at State and National level and represented Australia at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. He served on the VMC Committee and was Secretary 1958 to 1961. The 41st Annual Report as printed in the March Newsletter and brought up to date by a supplementary report from the Secretary was adopted with satisfaction as far as the membership numbers were concerned. However, participation and proper utilisation of forces and abilities withon the Club was regarded as unsatisfactory. This will be tackled specifically in 1987 and a beginning had already been made as the Secretary has re-arranged and' changed previous commitments to give more times to improving the management of the Club. The Treasurer reported a satisfactory state of affairs and financia I management, but warned of constantly rising costs and additional commitments in the way of insurance and overheads. The matter of a consultancy fee for the Secretary in view of greater time commitments on behalf of the Club was passed onto the incoming Committee. The Club has now been registered as an Incorporated Body,si nee March 3rd,1987.

VMC COMMITTEE MEET ING,ApriI 22,1987: It was recommended that LES PERRY be asked to attend at the VMC Marathon to receive his Lifemembership award. Bill Luke submitted a revamped design for VMC certificates. He also offered to sponsor the production for no cost to the Club. Raydn Nolan reported on negotiations for insurance cover and his recommendation to accept cover through Bain & Dawes, who specialise in sporting club insurance,to the amount of $1 M was adopted. Membership to date had exceeded 500,of which 10% were women, which was slightly up on figures at similar date in 1986. The Secretary reported on attending a computer course and evaluating acquisition of a suitable system in conjunction with a highly qualified computer consultant and VMC member. Competition-Race Managers were appointed as follows:MAY 24-Marathon-FRED LESTER, JANET O' DELL;JUN 7 ^-Mar-RAYDN NOLAN,NEIL RYAN;JUL 4 20k/10k-GERRY HART,GERRY RILEY; AUG 30-PUMA 32k-NEIL RYAN,MAL COTHER;SEP 19 30k/15k K & Q o.M-DOT BROWNE,GEOFF HOOK. ZATOPEK SERIES sub-committe was appointed to prepare details and meet with VAA representatives. Geoff Hook reported on progress of 50 Miles preparations and expecting sponsorship as well as good participation. MEMBERS' LETTERS: From MERV LARTER,Bayswater,10/2/87. - Dear Janet, As I find it more and more difficult to attend VMC RR events,I find it impossible to stipulate any events to take duty. I was even at the stage of resigning but because of the activities and pleasure I have received during seven years of membership I decided against this step. If I at any time have the chance to attend during the ensuing year I may be able to assist then, hoping you understand my predicament. Thanking you M.W.LARTER

From STAN NICHOLLS O.A.M.,BaI Iarat,25/3/87. - The Committee VMC RR, Dear Members, Thanks for the reminder of my subscription due.I usually pay promptly - but this year I considered resigning. Please find a cheque for $12 enclosed for 1987 membership. I think the VMC ROAD RUNNERS CLUB is a great organisation, and you will know that I have been a member for many years. I feel quite sad that I have heard that the club is in such finacial difficulties, that it has become necessary to increase the fees, now to $12 - which is a 50% increase on last year. We have found in other organisations that I am associated with, that when we increase our fees,we find that we have lost many of our previous members, and finacial diffi culties increase further,as evident in our Vistorian Athletic Associat ion.We have been to Id,that the VAA previously had 8000 members, and now it only has 5000,si nee fees have been increased several times. Please read this letter out at the next meeting of the VMC ROAD RUNNERS CLUB,so that they will know my thoughts. Kind regards STAN NICHOLLS. (Editor's note:The increase to $12 was necessitated by having to take out Pulic Liability Insurance(app.$2 p.member)and rising costs. We held the fee per annum at $8 from 1981 to 1986.)

From Dr.JENNIE McKERN,E.Hawthorn,27/3/87. - Dear Sir, Thank you very much for your prompt reply to my request to join the VMC Road Runners. I was very pleased to see there are now many more runs than last time I was in the Club. The main reason I didn't rejoin last time was that I was unable to attend many runs due to the times they were on. Please let me know if there is any further way I can help with the running of the Club. Thanking you again, kind regards JENNIE McKERN.

From ARNOLD J. R0SIN,-IsraeI,27/3/87. - Dear Sir, I have been visiting Melbourne in the past 2 months, staying at E.St.KiIda.During this time I had the pleasure of participating in 4 running meetings - the Cubitt 10 Miles, Princes Park 19k,the 2 Bridges 10k and hte Queen of the North 12k. I expect that most or all of these races will be recorded in the next News Ietter-the one for Autumn 87 records meetings only till the end of January.I should be grateful therefore if you could kindly send me the next News Ietter to my address in Jerusalem, and I enclose $2 for expenses. It waa a great experience running with the boys (and girls). All the best and keep running! Yours sincerely ARNOLD J. ROSIN (age 56).

From MERVYN J.FISHER,Essendin,4/4/87. - Dear Sir, Thank you for above correspondence.(M 'ship reminder Ietter,Ed.) I had not intended to renew membership - only on account of age.And I only run about the same Annual events — Gret Train,Ha If—Marathons & Oct.Marathon. No reflection upon yhe Club - so have attached cheque $12 to cover 1987. Yours sincerely MERVYN J. FISHER. Instead of cally monitored, but rather reliant on basic information running continuously for two kilometres and beyond, available and common sense. you can break your runs with rest periods or periods of relative rest such as jogging. N.B. With broken running you run the distances at a faster rate than with continuous running. You can do HEART RATE EXERCISE CHART this because you get the chance to recover. For example, a four kilometre run can be broken down into four runs of one kilometre with walking between. An eight kilometre run can be done in four segments of two kilometres each. How much you improve will depend on how often you do the endurance work and how hard- The resting pulse rate, a sign of heart efficiency, can drop as much as five beats in a few weeks with planned training. A pulse in the low 70s is average for a man. For a woman 75 beats per minute is average. If you are reasonably fit it should be around 65 beats per minute.

For the elderly, improvement begins at the 50-60% level. Long running produces a big heart chamber. Short, in tensive work produces a strong heart muscle. A REPLY TO A LETTER FROM THE V.A.A Comments in the March issue of VMC Newsletter(p.16 VMC Committee Report)have prompted a letter from Greg Mason,Executive Director of the VAA,which I hasten to add,is very much appreciated as it helps to highlight a key issue. I quote: On page 16,VMCRR Committee,"Dissatisfaction was expressed....closer consul tation seen as a key for improvement." As you are aware, the Winter General Meeting sets the guidelines for the Winter season and it would be apprpriate for the VMC to have items on the agenda for this meeting in an effort to keep everyone happy. AIternatively, perhaps a VMC/VAA Member on the Winter Committee would enable closer consultation. - End of quote. In my view,as a member of the VAA with over 40 years experience in virtually every facet of active participation as competitive athIete, administrator, coach, key official all year round, the VMC Committee is in error in seeing closer consultation as the "key".From my first day as Secretary of the VMC I found good consultation between the two bodies and this took place between the key people who took the responsibIity for working out fixtures well before any Committee or Council meetings,so that dates were largely on Iy a matter of approval or disapproval by the larger meetings. In the last few years,it was my experience that sub-committees and the Delegate meet ings declined into lengthy talking bouts discussing agendas which were overloaded with too many ill-prepared proposaI s.Whether that is due to more pressure on fewer people, lack of perspective on the part of sub-committees and club delegates,self- seeking on the part of individuals or clubs or maybe a dozen other causes is merely circling around the crux of the problem. It is fashionable to say that we are living in changing times.Truth is times are always changing and it^5eople who are standing still fall behind. But to be aware of changes and making the necessary adjustments to progress with the changes as time demands, demands also being involved.By that I mean being involved also at a number of levels. Ew-ery now and then people in responsible positions need a 'refresher course' as it were.Industry and Commerce are prepared to take key people out for a period to send them on 'refresher' courses,in a complex field such as athletics this is even more vital to retain balance and perspective. Nobody can afford to be exempt from this without losing effectivenessand balance. The 'key' to the dissatisfaction and loss of members is the failure to cater to changing needs and demands. But how to ayoid'j this when you are not involved at the same level? Let's take some examples: How would you like to stand in the heat of the summers day between 1pm and 5pm to act as an official? To have an event at 1.30 and the next at 4.30? Get out on a crosscountry course where even the marshals can't decide which is a 3k or a 4k loop? Start the season with an event which reauires a high degree of organisation such as a relay, when club offcials are only jusilfinding out who may be back again? Let me further suggest as 'key' that there is another side to it:Even the beginning athlete needs to be aware of the different aspects that go into making our sport. Sure,we should not overwhelm the newcomer with too much at once, but acting as course marshaI,measuring or timing ,etc. are useful to their understanding of the problems in making our sport work for them. We have had many runners come into the VMC as an introduction to athletics, hundreds have gone on to join local VAA clubs only to find themselves frustrated by over- long programs in the summer and lack of variety in the winter.Of course ,you cannot please everybody. Aay sport will bloom if the people taking part are enjoying it.Make it difficult, time-consuming,absent of any tangible achievement and you lose them. This is our refuge from theeveryday rat race when we are looking for self-fulfilment,or self achievement if you I ike, make it easy to follow, don't create unnecessary work for anyone.Genera I Meetings make guidelines for more General Meetings!!! VMC EASTER RUNS 1987 - ENJOYING YOUR RUNNING. V.M.C.NEWSLETTER WINTER 1987 JUNE WHAT DO YOU MAKE OT IT ? ODDS AND ENDS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS. A bouquet to the many members who have improved their adherence to requests for filling in the unavoidable paperwork as requested. On Iy problem is that there are still a sizeable percentage who by inattention or last moment decision to do some thing fail to observe the simple procedure of following the steps as set out. As outlined in this issue’s editorial it is an extra cost burden to all of us and, worse,it decreases the efficiency of our organisation out of proportion. We can draw an analogy to todayfs age of the Computer.Whenever the computer spits out wron.g information or results, it can be led back to human error. In most cases it has been a lack of writing-in according to the particular computer's system, otherwise to putting in wrong information in the first place. The yearly Running Calendar has become so crowded over the years that many regular runners are having difficulties in chosing the right sequence of races to suit their personal requirements.Even several clubs and social running groups are having diffi culties in slotting in events suitable to club or work place championships. One way of overcoming the problem is to use existing fixtures which are efficiently conducted and work in with the organisers rather than looking for more runs on the caIendar. This can be done by looking for co-operation with established running events and possibly telescoping the organisation of runs to the satisfaction of two or more organising bodies.Sorting out individual scores after the finish is no problem. This column depends on the ideas of many peopIe,mostIy odd comments scribbled on bits of paper and then time spent on trying to flesh out what it is all about.I wish people would scribble down (legibly preferably) all those things which they come up with at times when there is a general hubbub right before the start or when sorting out the commotion at the finish.Never mind the Syntax, get it down on paper, that makes it easier to sort it all out at the office later. It happens to us all.Usually while we are busy and involved in some activity something or some happening triggers off a thought or idea which looks useful to us.How often do we wish afterwards: Had we only taken the time out to write it down,we cannot quite recall now how it was in detail, much less how can we expect someone else to remember how we saw it. Melbourne University's Sports Centre in its excellent guide to training for sport(see page 19 this issue) has some sound advice under the heading: MOTIVATION. Fitness is a Iife-Iong,Iong-Iife pursuit. You can make exercise a regular habit if you: *Choose exercises you enjoy. *Exercise at regular times each day so that exercise becomes part of your daily routine. ^Exercise with a partner and take an active role in issues regarding fitness and health in your community. ^Monitor your capacity as your program progresses. You 1 I I find your steadily increasing capabiIities(and/or decreasing waistIine)the best motivator around. REMEMBER,YOU DON'T STOP EXERCISING BECAUSE YOU GROW OLD; YOU GROW OLD BCAUSE YOU STOP EXERCISING.

Help ! I'll have to exercise REMEMBERING! The VMC ROAD RUNNERS is a unique organisation within the world of athletics.lt is a cltlfo which caters for the newcomer to running, the experienced regular athlete, the young and the old,men and women, boys and girls.lt represents a bridge as it were between the highly organised and the more casual approaches in competition, leaving i"*" ‘*’° fhe individual how much or how little pressure he/she wishes to apply. The accent within the club is on enjoyment of running through whatever participants see as their own particular pleasure, thus achieving individually or jointly what they set out to do to their fullest personal satisfact ion.We do not place expectations on anyone beyond asking runners to take a turn at performing some of the minimum chores required to conduct our events smoothly and for everyone's satisfact ion. This mainly involves ensuring that runners do not lose their way, that everyone can find out his or her final place and time and how they compare with each other or their own previous performance. The club maintains a program throughout the year with the aim of enabling runners to test and improve their fitness at varying distances and, where possible, cater for different stages of fitness by offering a choice between a long or a short race on each date.Anyone can join the VMC RR at any of our evnets;if they wish to just have a run without becoming members, they may do so at a $1 surcharge in the main race, except for special events. These Special events:the VMC MARATHON,HALF-MARATHON,50 MILER,EMIL ZATOPEK 10,000m SERIES and some other nominated events, because of their importance and the high degree of organisat ion, require EARLY PRE-RACE ENTRIES(2-5 weeks a head or as advertised)and, in the case of the EMIL ZATOPEK SERIES,MEMBERSHIP AND TIME qualifications. Variations in entry fees occur because of differing organisational costs, number and value of prizes, provision of refreshments and other facilities. BasicaI Iy,the VMC ROAD RUNNERS aim to keep organisational and technical details to the minimum essential to conducting their events satisfactorily for all.We like to stick to our Club Motto "WITH A MINIMUM OF FUSS"! We also aim to co-operate with all distance running organisat ions,I oca I,regionaI and national. MEMBERSHIP FEES are $12 per year(senior),$6 per year(Under 20),incIuding insurance, and cover the Calendar Year.Your membership fee entitles you to receive our quarterly NEWSLETTER,carrying resuIts,events ahead, information, articles and comments from our own members and other sources.Post the completed Membership Form(overIeaf0,togehter with correct fee,to the GENERAL SECRETARY,VMC ROAD RUNNERS,598 High St,E.KEW 3102.
