Darby Dyar, Astronomy Approved By: Christopher Condit, Geology CE Type: Departmental Honors Project Using a gridded version of maritan topography with the computer program Gridview, this project studied the depth-diameter relationship of martian impact craters. The work encompasses 361 profiles of impacts with diameters larger than 15 kilometers and is a continuation of work that was started at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Dr. Walter S. Keifer. Using the most ‘pristine,’ or deepest craters in the data a depth-diameter relationship was determined: d = 0.610D 0.327 , where d is the depth of the crater and D is the diameter of the crater, both in kilometers. This relationship can then be used to estimate the theoretical depth of any impact radius, and therefore can be used to estimate the pristine shape of the crater. With a depth-diameter ratio for a particular crater, the measured depth can then be compared to this theoretical value and an estimate of the amount of material within the crater, or fill, can then be calculated. The data includes 140 named impact craters, 3 basins, and 218 other impacts. The named data encompasses all named impact structures of greater than 100 kilometers in diameter. -

Rising in all four directions, mountains encircle the peninsula of Anatolia. A part of the Alpine-Himalayan mountain range, Turkey has mountainous regions of different geological formations. The North Anatolian range skirts the Mediterranean shore. Turkey's magnificent mountains and forests are mostly undeveloped, existing as wonderful natural preserves for an extraordinary variety of wildlife, flora and fauna. Two of Turkey's most famous peaks are volcanoes, both inactive, Mt. Erciyes in Kayseri in Central Anatolia (3917 m) and Mt. Agri (Mt. Ararat 5137 m) in the East. Other well-known mountain ranges are the Rize-Ka‡kar (3932 m) in the Eastern Black Sea region, Nigde-Aladag (3756 m) in the Central Taurus range, and the Cilo and Sat Mountains (4136 m) near Hakkari in the Eastern Taurus. The mountainous nature of the country has influenced its cultural evolution. For centuries, nomads and semi-nomadic peoples have migrated annually to the fresh pastures of the higher elevations in the summer. These alpine meadows, called yayla, still represent a firm tie to traditional culture. For climbers and those interested in mountain geography, Turkey offers a wealth of exploration. Glaciers, volcanoes, and peculiar geological formations such as kars prove irresistible to researchers and students of geology. The challenging terrain offers great opportunities for aficionados of outdoor sports who find interesting experiences on the mountains of Eastern, Central and Southern Turkey. -

1 TURKEY’S NEW ECONOMIC DIPLOMACY BALANCING COMMERCIAL INTERESTS WITH GEOPOLITICAL GOALS Mehmet Ögütçü1 Abstract The need for a comprehensive reform agenda has become extremely pressing in Turkey. At the international level, the key element is Turkey’s drive towards EU membership, which will require a huge overhaul of its regime, practices and governance (linked with the call for a new political architecture and a redefinition of national interests in foreign affairs strategy). Domestically, sense of economic crisis has accelerated needed reforms and brought an unprecedented sense of urgency. The post-crisis Turkey may well rebound and recover quickly on a solid basis, as was the case in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian crisis for Thailand and Korea. We see the novel economic diplomacy strategy as an essential part of Turkey’s wide range of policy and institutional reform agenda, designed to put Turkey on a sound footing in the new international system. More economics and less geopolitics During the Cold War, the Turkish diplomacy, like that of other NATO nations, was more focused on security, regional stability, and managing the balance of power between two superpowers and two competing models of governance. Business interests often took a back seat to these concerns. Although frustrated, business understood this. Today, we live in a different world, where competition among nations increasingly takes place in the economic arena, although for Turkey situated in a difficult neighborhood, the security issues still top the national agenda and foreign affairs. Yet, advancing Turkey’s economic interests abroad will not only create valuable new business opportunities for Turkish firms but will also enhance Turkey’s pursuit of more traditional foreign policy and security objectives by creating interdependencies and mutual interests that cannot be readily sacrificed. -

APPENDIX I LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE A large number of names of craters and other features on the Moon and Mars, were accepted by the IAU General Assemblies X (Moscow, 1958), XI (Berkeley, 1961), XII (Hamburg, 1964), XIV (Brighton, 1970), and XV (Sydney, 1973). The names were suggested by the appropriate IAU Commissions (16 and 17). In particular the Lunar names accepted at the XIVth and XVth General Assemblies were recommended by the 'Working Group on Lunar Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr D. H. Menzel. The Martian names were suggested by the 'Working Group on Martian Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr G. de Vaucouleurs. At the XVth General Assembly a new 'Working Group on Planetary System Nomenclature' was formed (Chairman: Dr P. M. Millman) comprising various Task Groups, one for each particular subject.
