An explanation as to how individuals are then selected for an appointment as an Honorary Colonel” I am treating your correspondence as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000. A search for the information has now been completed within the Ministry of Defence, and I can confirm that the information in scope of your request is held and is below. In response to first part of your request please find attached a list of Honorary Colonels in the British Army. Some of this information is exempt from release under section 40 (Personal Data) of the FOIA. Section 40(2) has been applied to some of the information to protect personal information as governed by the Data Protection Act 2018. Section 40 is an absolute exemption and there is therefore no requirement to consider the public interest in deciding to withhold the information. In 1944, he visited the Third Army by the kindness of Major-General Paul Hawley, Chief Surgeon, European Theatre of Operations,. U.S.A., and this year, thanks to the courtesy of Brigadier-GeReral J. Martin, the Army Surgeon, 5th U.S. Army, he had the privilege of seeing a Medical Battalion in action SOOR after the victorious offensive was launched on the Italian Front in April last. It has been suggested that some information about the M~dica:l Service of our Great Ally might be of use to officers of the Corps, therefore my original notes ha~e been brought up to date in the hope that they may be of general interest.     BAOR ORDER OF BATTLE JULY 1989 “But Pardon, and Gentles all, The flat unraised spirits that have dared On this unworthy scaffold to bring forth So great an object….” Chorus, Henry V Act 1, Prologue This document began over five years ago from my frustration in the lack of information (or just plain wrong information) regarding the British Army of The Rhine in general and the late Cold War in particular. The more I researched through books, correspondence, and through direct questions to several “Old & Bold” on Regimental Association Forums, the more I became determined to fill in this gap. The results are what you see in the following pages. Before I begin a list of acknowledgements let me recognize my two co-authors, for this is as much their work as well as mine. “PM” was instrumental in sharing his research on the support Corps, did countless hours of legwork, and never failed to dig up information on some of my arcane questions. “John” made me “THINK” British Army! He has been an inspiration; a large part of this work would have not been possible without him. He added the maps and the color formation signs, as well as reformatting the whole document. I can only humbly say that these two gentlemen deserve any and all accolades as a result of this document. Though we have put much work into this document it is far from finished.     Issue 10: May 2015 The Mercian Family Newsletter The Heart of England’s Infantry News Regimental News - The 1 MERCIAN Rugby Union side emphatically beat 104 Regiment Royal Artillery, 35 points to 12 in April to win the inaugural Gheluvelt Cup. It took place at Sixways Stadium, the home of professional Union side the Worcester Warriors. The first half was particularly hard fought, with both sides capitalising on good build up play to trade scores. However, the 1 MERCIAN side showed its class in the second half, pulling away for a convincing win. It provided the perfect end to a brilliant first season for the side. Despite their relative inexperience as a team, they finished five points clear in their league to earn promotion and were the final Infantry Battalion competing in the British Army Championship Vase. The Colonel of the Regiment, Brigadier Williams OBE was also honoured to be able to open the MERCIAN SUITE, a hospitality room in Sixways which has been dedicated to the Regiment. It is hoped the match which is named after the Battle of Gheluvelt will now take place annually. 1 MERCIAN – Alongside continuing preparations for deployment to Canada in August, 1 MERCIAN soldiers were put to the test in April by US ARMY General Milley on Salisbury Plain. Corporal Simmonds from Walsall was given the Task Force Helm and Certificate of Commendation by General Milley. He was awarded the commendation for actions he took during a suicide bomb attack whilst in Afghanistan last year. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Ellwood MBE, Commanding Officer of 1 MERCIAN said: “The Battalion has been training exceptionally hard in recent months, so it was a real boost for the men to have their skills witnessed and appreciated by such a high ranking US General.

For the Army, this requires a generational change in its vision, structure, composition and capability to ensure that it can meet the challenges of 2020 and beyond. To implement this change, the Chief of the General Staff established a team to develop, from first principles, options for the future design, roles, structure and capabilities of the Army.
