The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) serves as a vital educational and cultural link between the and the five Nordic countries: , , Iceland, , and . A publicly supported nonprofit organization, the Foundation fosters cultural understanding, provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, and sustains an extensive program of fellowships, grants, internships/training, publishing, and cultural events. Over 30,000 Scandinavians and Americans have participated in its exchange programs over the last century.

In October 2000, ASF inaugurated its headquarters Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America where it presents a broad range of public programs furthering its mission to reinforce the strong relationships between the United States and the Nordic nations, honoring their shared values and appreciating their differences. 4 PATRONS—2013-15 H.M. Founded over 100 years ago to increase international Sincerely, understanding and cooperation through educational and cultural exchange, ASF has continued to pursue this mission with renewed vigor over the past two fiscal years. During Fiscal Years 2014 and 2015, more than 150 fellowships, grants, and special awards were presented to scientists, scholars, artists, and students enabling them to advance their education, research, and creative efforts abroad. Thirty-five public project grants were also made in support of artistic, cultural, and educational programs. In addition, ASF’s Internship & Training Program offered over 300 young professionals and students the opportunity to receive invaluable practical experience while living and working in another country. Each issue of Scandinavian Review, ASF’s highly praised periodical, was read by more than 8,000 individuals in the United States, Canada, and .

Scandinavia House welcomed a record of over 225,000 visitors over the past two years. The programs offered have been especially rich and varied. Several exciting exhibitions were presented, including: MUNCH | WARHOL and the Multiple Image which paired fin-de- siècle lithographs by Edvard Munch with large-scale screen prints by Andy Warhol; Danish Paintings from the Golden Age to the : Selections from the Collection of Ambassador John L. For more than 100 years the ASF Fellowships & Grants Program has awarded funds to Americans and GRANTS ADMINISTERED BY ASF Scandinavians engaged in study, research, or creative ASF has over 40 funds that it holds on a long-term arts projects. Each year the American-Scandinavian Foundation closely examined four graphic images produced by presents more than 150 cultural and educational Munch at the end of the nineteenth century and programs at Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in later revisited by Andy Warhol in a little-known but America. In addition to serving as the headquarters for extraordinary set of prints from 1984. ASF, Scandinavia House is a showcase for Nordic culture and a forum for the exchange of ideas and information.

EXHIBITIONS

The American-Scandinavian Foundation presents —HARALD SLOTT-MØLLER, SUMMER DAY, 1888 museum-quality exhibitions at Scandinavia House that highlight excellent artistic achievements in the Nordic Danish Paintings from the Golden Age to the Modern countries, covering both historical and contemporary Breakthrough: Selections from the Collection of subjects in a wide variety of media. Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr. Exhibitions at Scandinavia House are presented in the SAT—10-12-2013 THROUGH SAT—1-18-2014 third floor galleries: Stolt-Nielsen Gallery; Inger G. and Danish Paintings from the Golden Age to the Modern William Ginsberg Gallery; Hartvig and Olette Gundersen Breakthrough: Selections from the Collection of Gallery; and Leif Höegh Gallery. Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr. traced the developments in from the early 19th through the early 20th centuries—a period that saw the emergence of a distinctive national approach to painting in Denmark. Krøyer, and his pupils Harald Slott-Møller, and the internationally-renowned Vilhelm Hammershøi. Co-curated by Dr. Patricia G. Berman and Pari Stave, MUNCH | WARHOL brought together two of the twentieth century’s most prolific and inventive printmakers: Norwegian Edvard Munch and American Andy Warhol. Organized in honor of the 150th anniversary of Edvard Munch’s birth, the exhibition 21 ICELAND: Artists Respond to Place focused on the rich and complex relationship of contemporary Icelandic artists to the singular geography of their country—one of the most geologically dynamic places on earth. Darkness & Light: Contemporary Nordic Photography presented over 30 recent works by 10 emerging and established photographers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden whose practices demonstrate the breadth and strength of Nordic photography today: Thora Dolven Balke, Tonje Bøe —JETTE GEJL KRISTENSEN, HYPERKINETIC KAYAK, 2010 Birkeland, JH Engström, Joakim Eskildsen, Ulla Jokisalo, Voyage to the Virtual Bára Kristinsdóttir, Tova Mozard, Nelli Palomäki, Katya SAT—1-24-15 THROUGH SAT—4-4-2015 Sander, and Pétur Thomsen. The first Scandinavia House exhibition dedicated to digital, moving image, and light-based Nordic art, Voyage to the Virtual took the metaphor of “the voyage”—a concept deeply rooted in Nordic identity —as a starting point for an exploration into the ways contemporary artists are expanding on the human —MARJA HELANDER, BUOLLÁNOAIVI (MOUNT PALOPÄÄ), 2001 perceptual experience. Combining video, animation, sculpture, light, and interactive media, the exhibition

invited viewers on expeditions to the far north, travels Sámi Stories: Art and Identity of an Arctic People through time and space, and perceptual journeys into SAT—5-10-14 THROUGH SAT—9-23-2014 the realm of the virtual. Curated by the Tromsø University Museum and Northern Norway Art Museum, Sámi Stories: Art and Identity of an Arctic People was a landmark exhibition that examined the history, identity, politics, and visual culture of the Sámi, the indigenous people of Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia’s Kola Peninsula. The exhibition featured a selection of contemporary artworks and traditional duodji —TIINA KIVINEN, BOLD STOCKINGS, 2013 (DETAIL) (handicraft)—including a reindeer milk scoop, shaman’s Prize Prints: The Queen Sonja Print Award drum, cradle, as well as a selection of hats and dolls. Sámi FRI—4-17-2015 THROUGH SAT—9-1-2015 Stories offered visitors an overview of Sámi history and visual culture from the 17th century to the present. Prize Prints celebrated The Queen Sonja Print Award, a biennial prize established to encourage young artists working in the graphic arts. The exhibition featured recent work by the 2012 and 2014 prize winners Tiina Kivinen (Finland) and Svend-Allan Sørensen (Denmark), as well as a selection of works by the prize’s founders, printmakers H.M. Queen Sonja of Norway, Kjell Nupen, and Ørnulf Opdahl.
