Low Teo Ping to lead 2016 Olympic Team as Chef de Mission Singapore, 20 July 2015 – The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) announced the appointment of Mr Low Teo Ping (70) as the Chef de Mission for Team Singapore at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Low, a veteran sports administrator who is a Vice President at the SNOC and the President of the Singapore , recently served Team Singapore as Chef de Mission at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and will lead a Olympic Games contingent for the first time in Rio de Janeiro. He also led Team Singapore at the 2010 Asian Games and 2007 SEA Games, and was instrumental in contributing to Singapore’s sailing success during his presidency at the Singapore Sailing Federation from 1999 to 2010. Said Low of the appointment, “It is my privilege to be appointed the Chef de Mission to Team Singapore for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by the Singapore National Olympic Council. “As of now, our sailors and swimmers have successfully qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games. There are many other athletes who are working very hard to meet the mark to represent Singapore at the 2016 Games. I wish them all the best in qualification and their preparations.” Low will be attending the Rio 2016 Chefs de Mission seminar from 17-21 August 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He said, “The Rio 2016 Chefs de Mission Seminar will present the details we need to help prepare the team when they are in Rio for the Games. We will also be there exactly one year before the Games to experience the climate during the Games. I look forward to visiting Rio and learning more about the venues to bring back information vital to our team.” The 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5 to 21 August 2015. – End –

Chef de Mission for Team Singapore at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Date of birth: 30 March 1945

A banker with over 40 years of experience (30 years of which were with Citibank) working in Singapore, Jakarta, New York and Hong Kong, Low Teo Ping's last position before retirement in 2001, was Managing Director of the Swiss bank, UBS AG, heading its Wealth Management Division for South Asia and was concurrently the Deputy Branch Manager. He returned from retirement and served as Senior Advisor to the Citi Global Wealth Management in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East from 2003 to 2009. He was appointed as Global Supervisory Director of the Amsterdam-based ATC Group in 2009.

Today, Teo Ping spends a large part of his time in the management, development and promotion of sports both in Singapore and the Asian region and serves on several community service organisations, boards and business organisations.

Teo Ping served as the Chef de Mission for Singapore at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2010 Asian Games and 2007 SEA Games, and as team manager for the Singapore sailing team at the 2000 Olympic Games. He also attended the 2006 Asian Games, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games as an official representing the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).

AWARDS As recognition of his contribution towards sports development and management in Singapore, Teo Ping was awarded the Public Service Medal, PBM Award in 2006 and the Public Star Award, BBM Award in 2011 by the President of the Republic of Singapore. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Singapore Sports Council "Sports Inspiration" Award. In 2014 he was recognized by Asia Rugby Union for his contribution to the sport of rugby with the Distinguished Service Award.

SPORTING EXPERIENCE Teo Ping's interest in sports began early at school, having received Raffles Institution colours in softball, athletics, cricket and rugby. His rugby experience began with playing for Raffles Institution and the Blacks Rugby Football Club in the 60’s and went on to play scrum half for the Singapore Combined Schools, the Singapore National Under-23 XV and the Singapore National XV up to the early 70’s. In sailing, Teo Ping sailed competitively in the Hobie 16 class and participated regionally in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong and Japan, In 1985 he together with Edwin Low won the silver medal at the All Japan Hobie 16 Championships in Kamakura, Japan. He later went on to sail keelboats as a foredeck crew member on the 46-foot Swan, "Magic Dragon" and participated in the China Sea Race Series from Hong Kong to Manila and won line honours in 1990. He has also participated in the Malaysian Offshore Race Series and the Bali to Jakarta Passage race. He exercises in the gym twice a week and plays golf to a 17-handicap.
