The Man who would be Quain: Borges, the Detective Story and

David J. Hart

1. Two Roads Diverged

he English literary world scarcely registered Herbert Quain’s death. TBefore 1948 his creator, Jorge Luis Borges, also could have passed un- mourned there. But thankfully the August edition of genre bastion Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, a special “All Nations” edition devoted to inter- national , included Anthony Boucher’s translation of “The Garden of Forking Paths.” The piece won second prize. Many are familiar with the EQMM as Borges’s first appearance in Eng- lish, but few remember now the magazine’s namesake and editor, wildly popular at the time. Both the author and lead character of his novels, El- lery Queen was actually the partnership of Frederic Dannay and his cousin Manfred Lee.1 These details alone would be enough to attract Borges,2 himself one-half of H. Bustos Domecq. As Paula Rabinowitz, one recent critic who does remember Queen, puts it, this “pseudonymous amalgam . . . must have appealed to Borges,” even though (or perhaps because) the
