 President

It does not seem a year since Tony Leeflang stepped down as President and I took over, but when I look back at the year in review it has been 12 months of strong activityand achievement.

• As is the case this year the budget process for 2011 threw up a number of challenges, in particular falling patronage and strongly increasing utilities costs, particularly power. The Board resisted the temptation to simply continue to increase gate entry and affiliation fees, instead it chose to forgo spectator gate entry and maintain affiliation fees at half CPI. The impact of this has been significant with the profitability of the bar and canteen improving substantially.

• Over the summer period the Board and management met on a number of occasions to develop a new strategic plan, to provide direction for Hockey WA for the next five years. Today Hockey WA is focused on five key areas: Organisation, Revenue, High Performance, Participation and Infrastructure. The structure of Hockey WA has also changed to reflect this focus; now instead of seven department managers we have four plus the CEO responsible for the achievement of clearly defined objectives.

• Although the Lanco International Super Series (LISS) came to Hockey WA from Hockey Australia, it was firmly within our plans to run some form of income producing event at the conclusion of the season, thus making the Perth Hockey Stadium a net income generator rather than a major expense to the Hockey community. To this end the staging of LISS was an outstanding success with considerable revenue raised, an increased exposure of the sport throughout Australia but particularly in WA, and a profile builder for Hockey WA with such organisations as the ABC, State and Federal Sports Ministries and importantly the business community of Perth.

• The performance of our state teams was also a highlight, with Western Australia finishing second behind NSW on the WA initiated, but now nationally adopted, ranking system for all junior and senior state teams. Note this is a significant improvement from our fourth place ranking held over the last few years and is a year ahead of the objective set in the strategic plan.

As we enter the 2012 season a number of challenges face Hockey WA and again a number of them are financial. Of particular concern is the increasing cost of utilities, with the State Government flagging another 29% increase in power costs to take effect in July of next year. Our water usage and costs are also on the increase.

With these increases in mind, Hockey WA and Curtin University have commenced a dialogue to: - Ensure that both organisations can obtain the best possible rates for utilities - Research a number of water conservation and alternate power generation options that in the longer term will reduce costs - And finally to investigate opportunities for Curtin University students to become involved in the many activities that the managing of an international sporting facility and high performance sports programs present.

The Board is becoming increasingly concerned about the costs of State team representation at national championships. To this end Hockey WA has been an active proponent of a rationalisation of the Australian Hockey League competition (AHL) away from numerous rounds being played over the course of a season at various locations, to a more efficient and sustainable tournament model.

The integrity of our competitions and the provision of pathways for WA athletes is also an area that Hockey WA is continually reviewing. In 2011 we introduced the import player rule thereby going some way to ensuring WA athletes are given the opportunity to play at the highest level of our competition and encouraging clubs to invest in the development of their own players.

Finally I wish to acknowledge the contribution of two members who left the Board over the course of the year, Brian Mayo and Struan Burges, both of whom have played pivotal roles in the development of the current Strategic Plan and the restructure of the organisation of Hockey WA and I thank them for their efforts on behalf of the hockey community.

To Kevin Knapp and the staff who have had to deal with numerous challenges, thank you for your efforts and to the Board of Hockey WA thank you for the support and many hours of voluntary contribution to Hockey in WA. Peter Churack President CEO

Hockey WA has completed its first year of the new Strategic Plan 2011 – 2015 with some notable achievements against the key performance measures. Some of these are detailed below. With a new Board of Directors being led by President Peter Churack contributing to ongoing strategic planning, the organisation is in a strong position to face challenges and identify opportunities into the future. Our sport would not be what it is without the support of our major partners DSR and Healthway whose invaluable contribution to our organisation is greatly appreciated.

High Performance 2011 has been a very successful year for Western Australian State Teams with the Under 21 Men’s and Women’s teams victorious at their respective National Championships and the WA Thundersticks also taking out top honours. The success of these teams was particularly positive as all were coached by new coaches who were mentored by WA’s Institute of Sport (WAIS) coaches.

In October, WA ran the first HockeyEd Advanced Coach Program to cater for a growing cohort of quality coaches involved with clubs and state team programs. We also competed this year for the first time in the Under 13 National Championships and the Under 15 Indoor National Championships will be held in Perth in January. Participation The Hockey WA metropolitan competition experienced significant growth in 2011 emulating the record figures attained two years earlier. The 31 team growth equated to 4.4% – well above the strategic plan target of 2%. Additionally, junior team numbers grew by 5.35%. Male team numbers had their most pronounced growth since 1992-93 with 17 additional teams (4.1%) whilst female team numbers were up for the seventh consecutive year with 14 additional teams (4.84%).

Hockey 4 All is an inclusive hockey program that has celebrated its second year of operation in 2011. It provides a great hockey experience for young people living with an intellectual disability. With the invaluable support of our clubs and in particular Curtin Trinity Pirates and WASPS as well as Inclusion WA, this program is poised to expand in 2012.

Regionally, team numbers remained steady but many centres benefited from participation programs and coach education initiatives that were carried out. More than 15 regional areas from Albany in the south to Karratha in the north and out to Kalgoorlie in the east saw more than 100 coaches gain accreditation and 5000 children introduced to the sport. Facilities 2011 was another very busy year at the Perth Hockey Stadium. We faced many challenges throughout the year. The main challenge we faced, and are still working on, was the failure of several roof trusses on the south end of the building. The remedial work to the roof structure will be completed late in 2011 and ensure PHS is fully operational for both Hockey WA and AIS staff heading into 2012.

We are in the process of rolling out a new venue management system for all bookings at the facility. This improved system is more user-friendly and will be better integrated with the accounting systems. Staff It has been another good year in the bar and canteen with a significant increase in conferences and functions at the facility. Long serving Manager Hospitality, Bar and Catering, Lionel David and Senior Supervisor Finance Laraine Waldron will retire at the end of the year after decades of service to Hockey WA . We wish them well. Lionel and Laraine, you will be sorely missed. We also thank Barb Jenkins for her many years as Manager of Facilities. To all staff and volunteers and the hockey community, thank you for a great year. Kevin Knapp CEO Club and Game Development

The new 2011-15 Strategic Plan brought with it a Key Performance Indicator to increase metropolitan competition team numbers by at least 2% per annum. This had occurred just twice in the five preceding years and the greatest percentage growth since team numbers were first recorded 12 years ago occurred in 2009, when there was an increase of 25 teams – 3.69%. Both marks were well and truly exceeded through 2011 with the competition growing by 31 teams, or 4.40%. Furthermore, the increases exceeded another strategic plan performance measure of 3% in junior competitions with 17 more teams equating to 5.35% growth.

At a glance: • Male team numbers up by 4.10% (17 teams) – the most pronounced growth since 1992-93. • Female team numbers up by 4.84% (14 teams) – seventh consecutive year of growth with an average of 4.76%. • Increase of 84 female teams from 2004 represents 38% increase – 56% of this growth has come from junior girls (47 teams). • The slight decline in senior hockey in 2010 (-0.71%) has been arrested with 3.21% growth in 2011. • Half-year cohort that are currently in year nine and do not seem to be having an impact on team numbers – boys and girls in this grade are only three teams down on 2010.

20 clubs increased their team numbers in 2011 – eight more than the previous year. Most new teams came from the junior section with Riverside Lions experiencing the most growth in this area for the second year running. The juniors at Riverside have now grown by 72.4% in just two years.

Victoria Park Panthers grew significantly for the sixth consecutive year – their lowest annual percentage growth in this time has been 8% and the club has doubled in size. In addition to this growth, Ellenbrook Hockey Club was created in the north eastern development hub, entering six teams.

Whilst there are a number of factors that contribute to growth, the stability of the competition structure and its delivery cannot be underestimated. Assistant Manager for Club and Game Development, Mark Watton, joined Hockey WA late in 2010 and led the competition delivery team of Claire French (Competitions Co-ordinator) and Fiona Stuart who was appointed as the Officiating and Education Co-ordinator at the start of the season.

It was a baptism of fire for Mark and Fiona but their hockey knowledge complemented Claire’s experience and the winter season progressed relatively smoothly with some successful new initiatives. One of these was to hold the AHG League Willow Bridge grade Grand Finals on a different weekend to other grades giving all hockey players the opportunity to attend.

The success of club recruitment programs can also be attributed to the increase in team numbers, as participants move into full-field hockey. With the nationwide Hook in2 Hockey program becoming more beneficial to clubs in 2011, there were more than 3000 participants in the program across the state. The ability of our Junior Programs Co-ordinator, Nicole Serafini, to service participating clubs and regional associations contributed to Western Australia maintaining its status as the leading program in the country.

The Regional Participation program took on a new look with Healthway continuing its sponsorship but with the focus more on participation than message promotion which saw more than 13,000 children participate in school hockey programs in and around Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Collie, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Mandurah and Narrogin. Our Regional Development Officers – Lisa Flynn, Rodney Johnson, Ben Matthews, Amanda McFall, Julie Oates, Megan Pollard, Wendy Wales and Judith Want – have worked tirelessly to achieve this result and should be commended for their work.

The 2011 Valued Volunteer and Officials Awards function was held during the inaugural Lanco International Super Series in October. Barry O’Neill was acknowledged for his contribution to the junior grading process over the years particularly with the creation of the player registration forms that save clubs and volunteers valuable time and Nicola Ogden recognised for her continued work with state teams and indoor hockey. Denise Willcock also took out the prestigious Service to Officiating award.

Congratulations and thank you to all volunteers involved with Hockey WA and our affiliates who give up their time and efforts for the betterment of the sport in Western Australia. Damien Todorovic Senior Manager – Club and Game Development High Performance

Western Australian State team performances were outstanding in 2011 with the WA Thundersticks winning the Australian Hockey League for a third time in four years. At Under 21 level the men and women were also victorious giving WA a rare double in this age group. Our junior state teams also fared well with all finishing in top 4 positions at National Championships. WA participated in the Under 13 National Championships in its inaugural year with the girls finishing a creditable third and the Under 13 boys losing just one game on the final day of competition to finish second. Other successful state teams included the Under 21 Men’s Indoor Team and the Masters Men Over 55 and 70 teams, and Women’s Over 55 team who all won their respective competitions.

Several WA athletes debuted at international level in 2011 including Tristan Clemons, Aran Zalewski and Chris Bausor. Athletes selected to Junior National Squads included Penny Squibb, Kathryn Slattery, Katy Symons and Brodie Sarre. Fergus Kavanagh, Kiel Brown, Jonathan Charlesworth, Brent Dancer, Ian Burcher, Trent Mitton, Ashleigh Nelson, Kobie McGurk, , , Kate Hubble, Lisa Eglington and all represented Australia or Australia “A” throughout a busy 12 months.

On the coaching front several new head coaches joined the state team programs in 2011 including Ben Senior (Under 21 Men), Mal Cowan (Under 21 Women), Blake Burrows (Under 18 Men), Charlie Gaudoin (Under 15 Boys), Russell Harvie (Under 13 Boys) and Brad Ladyman (Under 13 Girls). Several other coaches returned for a second year adding great experience and a high level of expertise to our coaching pool. Mal Cowan received the Hockey WA State Coach Recognition award for his efforts coaching the victorious Under 21 Women’s State Team.

Hockey WA relies heavily on the work of these coaches, their assistants, managers, physiotherapists and video technicians and thanks them all for their valuable contribution throughout the year. In addition to these off field staff many volunteers give considerable time to select our state teams. Our thanks in particular are extended to Peter Freer (Chair of Selectors for Men) and Simon Tiverios (Chair of Selectors for Women) who co-ordinated many selection trials on behalf of Hockey WA.

Much of the behind the scenes work in 2011 in high performance was directed by the High Performance and Coaching Committee. In 2011 Colin Howell took on the role of Chair with Graham Reid stepping down to concentrate on his national coaching duties. The WA hockey community thanks Graham for his many years of service to WA hockey in a range of valuable roles. Clover Maitland and Grant Mitton joined the Committee which was kept busy throughout the year with new rules, state team appointments and high performance issues. Jen Anyalai joined the High Performance Department in October from the AIS so Melissa Johnson could move full time into event management.

The challenge in high performance in 2012 will be to continue to build on our 2011 successes. The London Olympics will no doubt be the focus of an exciting year with WA athletes and coaches playing a key role. Sally Bell Senior Manager – High Performance Facilities and Infrastructure

2011 was an exceptionally busy year at Perth Hockey Stadium. We hosted 13 tournaments throughout the year with the highlight of the season by far being the hosting of the Lanco International Super Series in October. The event gave us a great opportunity to showcase our facility.

In September we were faced with a big challenge when several roof trusses on the south end of the building failed. Necessary precautions were taken to ensure the safety of the staff and the remedial work will be completed by the end of the year. We are currently investigating longer term options for the sustainability of the facility.

With the help of Department of Sport and Recreation we have finalised a detailed audit of the stadium and facilities. The report will enable us to do accurate long term forecasting and budgeting for the upkeep and improvements of the facility over the next 10 years. In addition we are in discussions with DSR and Curtin University to look at ways of reducing our utility costs.

Perth Hockey Stadium is in the process of rolling out a new venue management system for all bookings at the facility. This improved system is more user-friendly and will be better integrated with the accounting systems.

Renovations and paint work to the Eastman Lounge were completed this year and the changes made have brought the room up to standard for the ever increasing conference business. A self-serve bain-marie and coffee machine have significantly improved service delivery in the bar and canteen area.

As 2011 draws to a close I would like to thank the facility staff and the ground controllers for their commitment and hard work. I would also like to thank my predecessor Barb Jenkins for all her efforts. Perth Hockey Stadium will continue to be a high quality facility and will strive to be the number one hockey facility in Australia. Gerrit Engelbrecht Senior Manager - Facilities and Infrastructure

 Marketing and Events

Hockey WA marketing had another busy year with website developments, major events and good hockey performances. International events in Perth took on an extra dimension with the inaugural Lanco International Super Series in October. The event was an unparalleled success with Hockey Australia and Hockey WA banding together to run the event.

Sponsorship Hockey WA has many loyal sponsors and advertisers. Argonaut, DLA Piper and Wanderers Australia were new in 2011 and Kukri and Rising Stars have expressed their wish to continue an association with us. Hockey WA thanks Healthway, the Department of Sport and Recreation, FHE, CBH Group, Willow Bridge, Sportscover, Compac and AHG Group for their support. State teams have been supported by the Carbine Club, WestCourt Consulting, Pools and Spas Online, Grundfos and Waste Water Services. Also thanks must go to our many Gold Pages sponsors who contribute to State teams and players.

Events Although Hockey WA hosts a significant number of events annually the Lanco International Super Series was the first modified international event to be held in Australia with a 9 v 9 format, modified rules and larger goals. 10,000 spectators and many more viewers watching ABC television witnessed this debut event with Pakistan, India, Malaysia and New Zealand competing against Australia. The broadcast was followed throughout much of hockey-loving Asia and around the world.

With so many International teams playing and practising at PHS, events are now categorised to ensure an appropriate level of resources are allocated. Several international tests were held in Rockingham, Mandurah, Bunbury and Busselton before and after the LISS event. The Chinese Women’s Team also arrived in October to complete a six game series against the Hockeyroos.

In June the Australian Hockey League had a men’s round match in Perth and this was held simultaneously with the Rookey Carnival to showcase the game to our youngest followers. Hockey WA also hosted the National Championships for Under 18 Indoor, Under 21 Men, and the Women’s Masters. Melissa Johnson took on the full time role of Events Coordinator during 2011 and did an excellent job delivering high quality events under significant time pressure.

The Women’s Masters National Championship in October was the biggest event in terms of players with over 600 women, off field team and umpires. A major sponsor of the tournament was EventsCorp and Hockey WA would also like to thank AllLight Sykes, Utopia Financial Services and the Fruit Barn Donnybrook for their support.

Website Communication The Hockey WA website was given a new look at the beginning of the year and is becoming more interactive thanks to support from Rox Dawson and his team at Ascend 7. The site had another large increase in traffic over the season. In 2011 merchandise was sold online for the first time through the web and proved very successful with significant sales to parents and supporters of State players.

Club and player contact is an ongoing key priority and Hockey WA added greatly to its dissemination of information to members this year through E-News and Hockey Bulletins. There are now nearly 10,000 families that receive the information fortnightly during the season Thanks must also go to Nicole Serafini for her constant updates on our popular Facebook page.

Kate Main Manager - Marketing Finance

This year overall Hockey WA is performing better than to 2011 budget expectations, with favourable variance in some areas (increased participation, unanticipated special events) and unfavourable variance in other areas (lack of anticipated sponsorship, reduced bank interest etc). Funding was helped by the DSR-WA Triennial Organisation Sustainability Program Funding Agreement renewing in July 2011 and the continuing two year Healthway sponsorship commencing 2011. In addition we received welcome additional funding for Development in Participation from the Australian Sports Commission via Hockey Australia, which will be ongoing for a number of years.

In contrast, the Perth Hockey Stadium has had a challenging trading year, with an unexpected roof maintenance issue and the costs for this are not yet finite, but we are hopeful of receiving some DSR-WA financial support. Trading in the Bar and Café has been good as to budget, post the abolition of spectator gate fees for the main winter competition.

During the 2011 year we were advised of further very substantial increased utilities charges (mainly electricity and to a lesser extent water and sewer cost increases), some of which had been anticipated and will heavily impact us going into 2012. This has caused us to continue to rethink and appraise how PHS is to operate with user-pay principles for its charges to the membership, into the future. We are continuing the process of assessing priorities and budgets for capital projects and essential preventative maintenance programs.

Our Group Insurance Plan with Sportscover Australia continued to achieve a high level of participation in 2011. During the early part of the year we have been closely involved with Hockey Australia and its appointed broker JLT Sport, in planning for and successfully transitioning to a National based Group Insurance Plan which came in to effect at the March 2011 renewal. Premiums per team were able to be further reduced after having been held steady for a number of years. All member metropolitan clubs and regional associations now participate in the Hockey WA Group Insurance Plan, or have approved cover of their own for their member players and volunteers.

At the date of preparation of this report, we continue monitoring the potential impact of a Class Order issued by the Australian Securities & Investment Commission (ASIC); with the latest extended full implementation date now end 2011. The Order concerns group insurance providers (termed ‘group purchasing bodies’) being relieved from holding an Australian Financial Services (AFS) Licence with certain conditions and undertakings. This remains potentially an issue of new statutory compliance which will affect all of our metropolitan club and regional association members, as well as impacting Hockey WA and Hockey Australia themselves, in terms of disclosure requirements and the quality of data bases held.

Staffing-wise in the Finance Department, we have remained very stable during the 2011 year, with the team of three continuing on (Kim, Laraine and Ruth) and keeping the finances fluid. The after season end part of the year has been particularly busy with the hosting of events. In the latter half of the year we have welcomed an addition to the staff in Ms Allison Fitzgerald who has joined us in preparation for the impending retirement of Laraine at the end of the year. Thank you to Laraine, Ruth and Allison for their considerable efforts during the year. Mr Kim Rodgers Senior Manager – Finance

 Junior Committee

The challenges of bringing together clubs of varying player resource bases and expectations in one season under the Hockey WA banner are significant. Very early in the process, the work of Junior Coordinators in gathering reliable data to complete the nomination kit for J7/8, J9/10 and J11/12 grades is not to be underestimated. Clearly more people at club level need to be across the current grading process which involves comprehensive input by all clubs through nomination kits and a paper grading day and from this the draft determination of age grade structures is made.

For the second year no grading games were held, however, results were closely monitored early in the season with adjustments made to a number of grades, normally after the first three fixtures. Most disappointment from clubs with the allocation of final grade can be traced back to nomination kits that are either incomplete or inaccurate. The importance of accurate information cannot be over stated.

The J5/6 carnival effectively launched the junior hockey season and for the third year this carnival was extremely well supported with over one hundred teams participating. A special thank you goes to all those involved in the organisation of the carnival – at club level and also in the Hockey WA office.

The success of this carnival in growing the sport at the J5/6 level poses considerable challenges to clubs in retaining players as they move through the junior age levels. Best practice shared with clubs at Junior Coordinator meetings continues to highlight the ongoing need for good communication with players and parents and the effective mentoring of junior players by senior players as juniors move through the various age divisions.

Ground allocation provokes ongoing debate within clubs and at meetings of Junior Coordinators. For the third year a combination of home and away and centralised venues was utilised. The process is highly competitive and feedback will continue to be sought from clubs on ground availability and condition to come up with the best possible mix.

It is encouraging to see more clubs actively fostering junior umpires. All clubs are urged to make this a priority in 2012. The senior club coaches and all junior coaches are particularly influential in driving a positive club culture towards umpires.

Volunteers continue to underpin our sport – junior coordinators, coaches, managers and umpires. Clubs are urged to recognise all those who contribute to the growth and development of our great game. On behalf of the Junior Committee and the Hockey WA team; particularly Nicole Serafini and Claire French we sincerely thank you. Mike Young Junior Committee Convenor

10 Club and Game Development Committee

2011 saw a changing of the guard within this committee. It was going to be difficult to replace the hockey knowledge and the personal skills of Ceri Writer, Peter Churack, Nic Gill and Andrew Spittle but we battled on. We searched for some people to join us who offered clear thinking, foresight and a deep love of the game and we were very pleased when John Heath and Ross Easton took up the challenge. With Julian Peet and Mark Nicholls we spent some time re-evaluating the Committee’s purpose and its responsibilities.

We received great support and leadership from staff liaison officer Mark Watton and Damien Todorovic was always willing to guide us through some of the pressing issues faced by Hockey WA.

It was difficult to manage a quorum on all occasions but even so we managed good and robust discussions. Some of the areas covered during this year were:

• Reviewed the concept of an Under 21 Men’s Saturday competition to help reduce the drop off in junior boys’ numbers when moving to senior hockey. • Commenced the process for suggesting clubs include a Youth Coordinator to assist juniors in their transition to seniors • Discussed the potential committee restructure for future years. • Discussed and formalised the documentation on standardisation and simplification of hockey facilities across the competition • Continued the investigation and implementation of a new strategy that addresses late team withdrawals and its impact on the release of fixtures • Discussed further the framework relating to club development, recruitment at club level and best practice club operations.

The Committee feel the potential restructure of all committees of Hockey WA will ensure a better flow of information between representatives and their working groups and provide a stronger platform for decision making.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow committee members – Mark Nicholls, Julian Peet, Ross Easton and John Heath and our Staff Liaison Officer – Mark Watton for their tireless efforts, their commitment and their enthusiasm throughout the year.

Greg Hunt Club and Game Development Committee Convenor

11 High Performance and Coaching Committee

Another year gone and with it a range of different issues that needed to be addressed, or in some cases just keenly observed to ascertain what further action may be required.

The first issue that confronted the HPCC was the unexpected resignation of its chairman, Graham Reid, whose position as Australian Men’s Assistant Coach, made it impossible for him to keep devoting the necessary time to this Committee. His loss was felt by all involved with the Committee and we thank him very much for this input over the years. While losing “Poss” was difficult for us we did have good news as well with Clover Maitland and Grant Mitton both joining the Committee and adding valuable expertise.

Probably the two major issues facing us in recent years have been: 1. Managing the number of imports plying their trade in Perth each year, and 2. Trying to find ways of ensuring more of our younger players are exposed to the top level of our local competition on a regular basis.

With these issues in mind, specific rules were put in place in 2011 requiring top grade clubs to face some level of restriction as to who could play each week. It is early days yet as to its longer term worth but initial data would indicate that more young WA players got field time in 2011 than they have in previous years, which can only be a good thing for those individuals, and we hope for Hockey WA.

Another major issue facing the HPCC is to continue the review of our core processes in respect to the selection of our underage teams, and also the structure of their training programmes. While both these issues are a work in progress we are comfortable that we are heading in the right direction as old practices are overhauled and reviewed. One initiative this year as a result of our review has been to hold the Men’s Under 18 trials at the end of the current season rather than in the middle of summer (the “off” season), and then run a summer programme for selected athletes.

An ongoing problem each year is to ensure we attract quality coaches in each age grouping, as it is of vital importance to us that our elite athletes are given every opportunity to give their best. We have been extremely fortunate this year to have quality people across the board from WA Thundersticks and Diamonds – Chris O’Reilly and Neil Hawgood, to Under 21s – Ben Senior and Mal Cowan, Under 18s – Blake Burrows and Emily Halliday, Under 15s – Charles Gaudoin and Steph Andrews, and finally to our newest State age group the Under 13s – Russell Harvie and Lawrie Tylor (boys) and Brad Ladyman (girls). They have done a fantastic job. Many thanks to you all for your commitment to the cause.

A Committee like the HPCC will not run smoothly without support from the Hockey WA office and for this I thank Sally Bell for her untiring efforts to ensure all went well. Your work has been much appreciated. Thanks Sally.

Finally I would like to thank my fellow committee members – David Bell, Simone Brown, Peter Freer, Clover Maitland, Grant Mitton and Neil Hawgood for giving so freely of their time and expertise for the betterment of WA Hockey. It is also very much appreciated.

Colin Howell High Performance and Coaching Committee Convenor

12 Officiating Reference Panel

Hockey officiating is very important. The role of our officials must be encouraged and respected at all times by all levels of hockey.

The Officiating Reference Panel (ORP) has met frequently during the year and implemented many initiatives to improve the standards of officiating and to recruit and retain officials in our sport.

The ORP has facilitated and put in place the coaching and training of our officials and in doing so has analysed performance and provided feedback and support to our officials. There is always ongoing planning and development of ideas to recruit, retain and train our officials at all levels. Keeping officials motivated and enthusiastic is a major challenge for hockey, especially with a culture in WA where not all our players and administrators respect officials. Our hockey officials are subjected to unnecessary abuse, with the consequence that we have difficulty in retaining experienced officials.

The ORP is on the lookout for umpire coaches and mentors to help provide individual support to our officials to assist in their promotion and development. We have an energetic group of umpire coaches and we thank them for their contribution.

Umpire briefings continue to be conducted to assist our officials with rule interpretation and any new regulations or requirements.

We encourage club management to take a proactive role in supporting our officials, especially in stamping out abuse of officials. Clubs can do this by taking a stance and implementing club policies that have a positive approach to the development of officials and improving the level of respect for them. This should be embraced by all clubs with the aim to educate players, parents, supporters and coaches. There is so much more that the clubs can do, including publicly thanking the officials, discouraging abusive behaviour, providing club members with a Code of Conduct, creating an officials network, providing information on the rules, promoting positive behaviour and establishing an Official of the Year Award.

Our Whistler publication has become a very informative medium for officials and umpires and is a widely read newsletter domesticallyand internationally.

The challenge remains for the hockey community at all levels to recruit and develop more umpires. We believe that in WA we have some of the world’s best umpires in our ranks.

This year Melissa Trivic was promoted to Grade 1 International Umpire. This international recognition is a significant achievement on her part which is richly deserved. Melissa is a very talented official and has brought much credit to the umpiring fraternity in Australia. Melissa is a wonderful role model for all our local umpires and has shown what can be achieved, especially by female umpires. Melissa umpired at Women Champions Challenge in Dublin in June 2011.

Murray Grime is scheduled to umpire at the Men’s Champions Trophy in New Delhi in December 2011 and Sarah Allanson will umpire the Women’s Junior Cup in India in November 2011. National Championships officials are listed on page 39.

The recognition of our officials in 2011 saw Life Membership awarded to Ian Pitt. This is the highest honour that Hockey WA can bestow and in Ian’s case it was a reward for decades of service to officiating and hockey in WA. Also recognised were Frank Brown and Graham Napier who each received Awards of Merit for their services to officiating.

The Alec Brazier Outstanding Junior Umpire Award went to Michael Fernihough of Victoria Park and the Most Promising Umpire Awards went to Scott Embry for the men and Tahlya Sleep for the women. The Services to Officiating Award went to Denise Willcock. The 2011 Golden Whistle for Men 13 Country

was awarded to Dan Johnston and the Golden Whistle for Women was awarded to Sarah Allanson, who had a very good umpiring year during 2011, illustrated a significant commitment to umpiring in WA and performed well at a representative level.

On behalf of the hockey community I thank all of our valued officials at every level, technical officials, judges and umpire coaches for their tireless efforts throughout the year.

I personally thank the members of the Officiating Reference Panel for their wonderful efforts and contributions during 2011. The Panel has made significant advances and improvements in changing and improving the culture that surrounds officials and in doing so has elevated the role of umpires in WA. Hockey WA needs to be congratulated in providing support for our officials and a special mention for Fiona Stuart for her tireless efforts. Pino Monaco Officiating Reference Panel Chairman Country

It is of concern that only 25 teams entered into the CBH Group Men’s Country Championships this year and even more concerning that only four Associations were present to discuss its future at a meeting held during the event. Further research towards the end of the year showed that of the other available times to hold the event, the current June long weekend is the most favoured so we hope that the event will be better supported next year with a few changes to the format. The players who did attend had a good time with some great hockey being played. Congratulations to the winners of each division and the best players in each division.

On the positive side the CBH Group Women’s Country Championship has continued to perform well with over 50 teams competing thisyear. Congratulations to the winners of each division and to the players of the championships who took out the best player award in their respective grades. Thanks to the committee who spent the weekend in the office making it all happen.

The WA country teams attended the Australian Championships in Canberra and did us proud - the men coming 3rd and the women 5th. The men were coached by Mathew Corner and managed by Paul Bolger. A lot of hard work was put in by these two to get a very competitive side to represent WA country hockey and they knocked on the door for a championship win.

The Women’s Team had coach Rod Thornton and manager Vicki McAllister in a new look side with only a few who had been away before. This was a big step up for them but they grew as the championships progressed.

Congratulations and thanks to coaches and managers for all the hard work you put in, both before you left and whilst you were away. Congratulations to Terri Jasper and Jai Connelly for being selected in the Australian teams.

Thanks to the Country Committee for your input and work representing country hockey. Thanks also to Hockey WA staff who are willing to assist us in the country.

After six years as convenor of the Country Committee I am stepping down. I say thanks to the Committee for your support. To the staff at Hockey WA thanks also for your help and commitment to make country hockey enjoyable. Chris Scott 14 Country Committee Convenor Indoor

The predominant highlight for Indoor hockey in 2010/2011 was that the world of indoor was spreading throughout juniors in Western Australia. This season WA Indoor Hockey has for the first time developed a full spread of talent across ages starting as young as 12 through to seniors. Competition Winners 2010 Big ‘players’ in the development of the juniors over the last couple of years need to be acknowledged: Kynan Fuller, Kellie McLeish and Nicole Serafini. Nicole continues to work with Hockey WA in growing this fast, skilful sport amongst the young, up-and-coming players in our state. Premier League Men: Westside Wolves Having run a very successful junior clinic as well as an action packed state championships this year already, Hockey WA has taken on this junior development Fairest & Best: very well. Hosting the Under 15 championships at the Loftus Centre in Perth in January 2012 will be yet another step in the right direction. WA has a strong list Paul Nicholls (Fremantle) of talented players in this age group and it’s so exciting knowing that our future Under 21 and Senior teams will have experienced, developed players. Premier League Women: We wish the Under 21 teams for the 2011 National Championships all the best for their up coming tournament in Launceston. The men’s senior team will head Old Aquinians to Sale in country Victoria to try their hand at a gold medal. Fairest & Best: Amanda Calton (Old Aquinians) Last year’s Nationals were an overall success with the Under 21 Men coming first, the Senior Men and Under 18 Men coming second and the Senior Women and Under 18 Women coming third. State team lists and results are listed on page 31. The Under 21 men’s team had a fight on their hands to say the least (6-5 in extra time), but Division Two Men: they came home with the gold. Melville

Australian representatives were chosen in December 2010 and Amanda Calton, Fiona Young, George Watts and Chris Bausor travelled to Europe to compete in the Division Two Women: World Cup held in Poznan, Poland during February 2011. WA off field representatives were Mark Sandhu (women’s coach) and Nicola Ogden (women’s manager.) YMCC

Building the juniors now becomes crucial when planning for the 2015 World Cup. Our Under 18s and even Under 15s are age groups where talent spotting will Division Three Men: be a focus. Not excluding the Under 21s or other senior players, of course, as WA is home to many talented indoor players regardless of age. Old Aquinians

The club season was shortened compared to previous years to avoid the ‘lull’ that usually occurs post-Christmas and early in to the New Year. Despite this Division Three Women: reduction, the competition ran with 20 teams across 3 divisions in the men and 18 teams across 3 divisions in the women’s competition. Melville

Thanks and appreciation must go to the Indoor Committee members (John Christie – Chairman, Ryan Briggs, John Nettleton, John Orr, Sandra Orr and Fiona Young) Umpire of the Year: who continue to give their time and support to all aspects of indoor hockey in WA. There are many other volunteers in the indoor hockey community who we cannot John Nettleton possibly all name, however please accept our sincere appreciation for your efforts, time and dedication. Without the Committee and the volunteers the season, State teams, Australian representatives and the sport as a whole would not have half the chance to grow, develop and be enjoyed. Thank you and please keep up Most Promising Umpire: the amazing support. John Carroll Fiona Young Indoor Committee Member

15 Masters

In 2011, the Veterans’ Committee changed its name to Masters’ Committee to align with Australian and International Masters’ Hockey organisations branding. The Masters’ Committee of Hockey WA continues its responsibility for recommending policies and overseeing metropolitan Masters’ competitions, and selection of Masters’ players and officials for the annual Australian Masters Hockey Championships.

Masters’ metropolitan hockey competitions, comprising Midweek Men’s and Women’s Masters’ and the Saturday Men’s competitions, continued previous year’s trends to grow to 111 teams, an increase of five teams.

Considerable growth continues to occur in the Women’s Masters’ Competition where the number of teams is now limited by the availability of turf time slots on a Wednesday evening. The Committee continues to investigate options for Women’s Masters’ hockey competitions to grow including other time slots and grade formats.

For the Men, the Over 55 Saturday competition was again cancelled this year with too few nominations. Whilst teams were accommodated with appropriate permits in Over 50s and Over 60s divisions, the Committee will be working towards ensuring reinstatement of an Over 55 competition in some form to bridge the gap between Over 50 and Over 60 grades.

In 2011, Perth was the host of the Australian Women’s Masters’ National Championships. The WA Organising Committee lead by Fiona Stuart together with Hockey WA staff conducted a very successful tournament. Thirty-five teams representing all states and territories participated in six age divisions from Over 35 to Over 60. Western Australia were Gold Medallists in the Over 55s and Silver Medallists in Over 35s and finished in the top four in Over 40s and 45s. Pat Scott and Pat Ellis were recognised during the Championships for services to Australian Masters Hockey.

WA players selected in the 2012 Australian Women’s Teams were Marie Hadet, Debra Andrew and Judith Ritz for Over 50s touring England; Anita Scott, Lauren Johnston and Cheryl Kopec for Over 40s touring England; and Anita Duckworth and Suzanne Stoate for Over 45s touring Oceania. Dr Jennifer Rogers will travel with the OFT to England.

The Men’s Australian Masters competition was held in Canberra with WA sending eight teams including two Over 50s. This was probably WA’s best results away from home for many years with Gold Medals to Over 55 and Over 70 Divisions, and Silver Medals to Over 40, Over 50, Over 50 Div 2, Over 60 and Over 65 Divisions. Over 45s were semi-finalists. Frank Brown was recognised during the Championships for services to Australian Masters Hockey.

WA players selected in teams for England in 2012 were Michael Starling, Over 40s; Alan Dick, Over 45s; Bede Rogers, Shaun Bunn, Martin Ferrari, Matthew Jones, Graham Miller and Paul Scicluna for Over 50s; David Lockett, Stephen Pestana and Shane Williams for Over 55s; Rudy Keswick and Peter Morgan for Over 60s; Len Blyth, John Harper, Alan Stewart, Simon Thompson and Ken Walter for Over 65s; and Peter Gason, Barry Rutter, Stan Salazaar, Colin Sanders, Ron Venables, Les Waldon and Peter Willett for Over 70s. Paula Dick is Manager of Over 45s; Cameron Fairbrother, Coach of Over 50s and Rob Lawson, Coach of the Over 55s Australian Men’s Teams.

Congratulations to all winners at the Australian Masters Hockey Championships and personnel selected in the International touring teams for 2012.

The Committee comprised Lorraine Browning, Bill Campbell, Rob Lawson, Andrew Rahim, Helen Rule, Wendy Stone, Mal Skinner, Keith Gilbride and Peter Westlund. Fiona Stuart resigned during the year and was replaced by Sandy Cable. Thank you to all committee members for delivering a very successful on and off field performance in 2011.

The Committee were strongly supported in its role by Melissa Johnson, who succeeded Liam De Young and Sally Bell who provided significant support for State Teams. I warmly thank Kevin Knapp and Hockey WA staff members who have assisted the Masters Committee in 2011 to deliver on its charter.

Peter Westlund Masters Committee Convenor

The WAIS Women’s Hockey Program in 2010-2011 was highlighted by a dramatic penalty stroke victory over New Zealand in the gold medal match of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. WAIS had four scholarship holders in the Hockeyroos side that won gold, whilst domestically, the WA Diamonds finished third in the 2011 AHL tournament.

The start of the 2010-2011 campaign commenced in July with five WAIS scholarship holders selected for the Australian World Cup squad: Kobie McGurk, Ashleigh Nelson, Kim Walker, Shelley Liddelow and Jayde Taylor In August, these five featured in Australia’s World Cup warm up loss to hosts Argentina.

The Hockeyroos finished third in Pool B during the World Cup in September, after defeats against the Netherlands and Germany. Despite wins over Japan, India and New Zealand, the Hockeyroos missed out on the medal rounds, reserved for the top two teams in both Pools. The Australians secured fifth place in the tournament after defeating Korea 2-1 in the crossover.

Ashleigh Nelson, Fiona Boyce, Jayde Taylor and Shelley Liddelow were all selected to represent Australia at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi during October as the Hockeyroos secured a Gold Medal after defeating New Zealand in the final on penalty strokes.

The Hockeyroos progressed through Group A after defeating Trinidad and Tobago (11-0), India (2-1) and Scotland (5-2), whilst drawing 1-1 with South Africa. Australia moved into the gold medal match after defeating England 1-0 in the semi final, before a 2-2 draw with New Zealand couldn’t be settled in extra time. Australia held its nerve to win 4-2 on penalties.

Katy Symons and Kate Hubble were part of an Australia A team that travelled to Japan for a tour during October and November. New Hockeyroos coach in January announced the 2011 Hockeyroos squad, with WAIS scholarship holders Kobie McGurk, Jayde Taylor, Fiona Boyce and Ashleigh Nelson all earning positions in the 24 member squad.

In February, the Hockeyroos secured their first silverware for the year after winning a Four Nations Tournament in Argentina, after defeating the hosts in extra-time in the final. Kobie McGurk, Ashleigh Nelson, Jayde Taylor and Fiona Boyce all represented Australia. WAIS Program Athletes

These four were retained for a home test series with Argentina in Canberra and Sydney. The Hockeyroos lost the first match 3-2 in Ashlyn Ahrens Canberra, before recording a 0-0 draw in Sydney. Karla Barrett Fiona Boyce The Diamonds (see team list on page 30) overcame a slow start to the season to find form during finals week in Darwin, taking third place Hope Munro after defeating the Queensland Scorchers in the play-off match. Ellie Buckley Kate Denning Three members of the WAIS squad were included in the Hockeyroos’ Champions Trophy squad for the tournament in the Netherlands Kyra Flynn that started in June. Kobie McGurk, Jayde Taylor and Ashleigh Nelson all received call ups into the Australian team. Kate Hubble Shelly Liddelow Australia was grouped in Pool B, alongside hosts Netherlands, New Zealand and Germany. The Hockeyroos suffered a first up defeat Kobie McGurk against the Netherlands, losing 3-0, before being defeated 3-2 by New Zealand. Australia bounced back to defeat Germany 1-0, but it Kate Mead was not enough to progress through to the medal rounds. The Men’s NTC Hockey Program enjoyed another consistent and successful 12 months in 2011, with WA players and WAIS scholarship holders being heavily involved in the National Program.

The Kookaburras named a youthful squad for the 2011 Azlan Shah in April, with WAIS scholarship holders Kiel Brown, Jonathon Charlesworth, Brent Dancer and Fergus Kavanagh earning call ups. In May, Australia won the Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia, after defeating Pakistan 3-2 in extra-time. Fergus Kavanagh was named in the tournament all-star team.

In June, the WA Thundersticks commenced their 2011 Australian Hockey League campaign with rounds in Darwin and Perth. The Thundersticks suffered a 3-1 defeat against Queensland in the first match in Darwin, before bouncing back with wins over South Australia (3-0) and the Northern Territory (5-1). Later in June, the Thundersticks defeated Canberra (2-1) and Victoria (3-1) in Perth to sit second in the AHL standings ahead of finals week, with the WA outfit well placed for a shot at another title.

In late June, Hockey Australia announced two squads for separate Four Nations and Five Nations tour matches in Europe. WAIS athletes Fergus Kavanagh and Jonathon Charlesworth were selected for both tours, whilst Brent Dancer was selected for the Four Nations tour, and Kiel Brown and Trent Mitton were selected for the Five Nations tour. Chris Bausor was added to the squad and made his debut for Australia.

In July the WA Under 21 team were successful in winning the National Championship in Perth. Aran Zalewski and Brodie Sarre were selected in the National Junior Squad at the completion of the competition. This result was an outstanding effort by the team and the coaching staff. Ben Senior and Ed Welch were in their first year as coaches at this level.

The Thundersticks competed in the final round of the AHL in Sydney in August. The team maintained an undefeated run throughout the week and defeated NSW in the final with a thrilling 4-3 scoreline. Sam Pike was the hero of the game scoring with a powerful penalty corner conversion in the last two minutes to secure the win. Congratulations must go to all squad members and to Chris O’Reilly who was successful in his first effort as head coach.

The International Super Series and Tri Nation Series saw Triston Clemons and Aran Zalewski make their international debuts. Fergus Kavanagh, Kiel Brown, Ian Burcher, Brent Dancer, Jono Charlesworth ,Trent Mitton, Sam Pike and Bevan George were also selected to play for the Kookaburras and Australia A in this series.

The Under 18, Under 15 and Under 13 State teams all performed well in their Championships with a fourth, third and second placing respectively. An encouraging aspect was the commitment of new coaches at these levels. David Bell NTC Coach (Men)
