President

As outlined in the 2015 annual report, Hockey WA has delivered and had endorsed a revised 5 year strategic plan which sets out the pathway for our association going forward. The strategic plan is built around six key strategic pillars:

VALUE: Identify funding alternatives and ensure the efficient and effective use of resources for the benefit of the sport.

ORGANISATION: Deliver the highest standard of governance supporting sustainable growth across the whole of sport in Western Australia.

PARTICIPATION: Hockey to be the sport of choice attracting new participants through the active engagement of players; officials and volunteers of all ages

HIGH PERFORMANCE: To provide exceptional programs for the development of world class athletes and officials to achieve consistent success at national championships.

FACILITIES: Plan, develop and support / operate facilities that meet the expanding requirements of the Hockey WA community.

PROFILE: Increase the profile of Hockey in WA through the delivery of world class domestic, regional, national and international competitions and events.

Your Board and Management team are now ensuring that appropriate management and reporting processes are established to ensure an aligned delivery of our strategic objectives. This will include processes and engagement with our wider community to increasingly align our entire community against longer term objectives and outcomes.

In parallel to the delivery of the strategic plan, Hockey WA has published a series of values which underpin the operational activities and prac- tices of our association.

INCLUSIVE PARTICIPATION for all people of all abilities, gender, race and age group to achieve their full potential. TRANSPARENT and regular engagement to encourage dialogue and CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT. To work together to ensure ENJOYMENT for all. Open to INNOVATION and striving for EXCELLENCE in all that we undertake.

These values are critical to support our strategic plan delivery and as a Board and management team are committed to working to these values.

While the delivery of the revised strategic plan has been a major step forward for the future organisation, it is obviously essential that Hockey WA deliver against this plan. I am very pleased to outline how Hockey WA has already started delivering against these objectives:

Profile: Hosting Hockey WA has secured the hosting rights for both the Men’s and Women’s Australian Hockey League in 2016 with an option to host this tour- nament in 2017 and 2018.

This tournament will be held in in October 2016 principally at the Perth Hockey Stadium with the boys and girls Under 13 national tournament held in parallel.

The initiative to combine these events into a single tournament provides an exceptional opportunity for Hockey WA, working with Hockey Aus- tralia to promote the sport of Hockey through the delivery of a major world class tournament.

Hockey WA will be seeking the support and assistance of our whole community in the promotion, support and attendance at this significant event for our sport.

High Performance: National Championships At a national level, our young Thundersticks, with 8 debutants, fell just short of premiership gold for a second consecutive year with a 2-1 loss to a very experienced Queensland side. Coupled with an excellent year for our pathway teams who produced 2 gold and 1 silver, the future looks very positive for an era of success from the .

The WA Diamonds continued to regenerate as a group and while our AHL result was disappointing, we see a bright future ahead with signifi- cantly improved places from all our pathway teams.

The Western Australian Hockey Association (Inc.) 8 The Western Australian Hockey Association (Inc.) Reports

Participation: Junior Development Pathways Through 2015 Hockey WA has made significant changes to the development pathway for our young athletes. The program runs annually pro- viding increased opportunities for exposure of both metro and regional athletes to coaching and development exposure.

Parallel to the expansion of the pathway program, a wider range of participation development programs and camps for our younger partici- pants have been initiated.

Participation: Volunteers At the Hockey WA Dinner in October 2015, we presented the inaugural Hockey WA Volunteer Recognition awards to some very deserving mem- bers of the Hockey community in WA. It was a great privilege to meet and hear of the amazing contributions these people have made to our clubs in some cases over more than four decades.

Through 2016, we will continue to work with our wider community to identify, recognise and reward these individuals who are so critical to the ongoing success of our sport and association alike.

Value: 2015 Financial Performance Hockey WA continued to demonstrate improved financial sustainability. In 2015 a financial loss of $22,451 has been reported despite several unexpected financial impacts. Hockey WA is continuing to focus on opportunities to financial efficiency opportunities in 2016 to further secure our financial future while delivering on the operational and strategic objectives of the organisation.

There are significant contributors to our sport with whom Hockey WA, our clubs and regional associations could not deliver the exceptional competitions, facilities and high performance programs for our community. I would like thank all our sponsors, supporters, members, officials and volunteers for their significant contribution to our sport and their part in supporting past and continued success. I would like to thank the Board of Hockey WA, Peter Churack and his team for their continued passion, significant contribution and commitment to our sport.

2015 has been a significant year in setting a bigger and more focussed platform for our association. Hockey WA is excited about the future for our sport and look forward to working with you, our Hockey community to continue to take our association through some exciting opportunities.

Chief Executive Officer

The year 2015 will be seen as a watershed year in the development of Hockey in Western Australia. With the establishment of development programs TAP and HEAT along with the revamped pathway programs for our U/13 and U/15 athletes, we now have in excess of 700 athletes in structured programs running throughout the year.

Additionally through the auspices of the Officiating Advisory Group (OAG) we have well run development programs for umpires and officials, catering for in excess of 100 aspiring umpires from beginners to elite with a number of new umpires graduating from this program to umpire at the elite Melville Toyota League level.

The improvements in the process of team selection and coach development have resulted in considerable improvements in the performance level of all state teams. Particular success was achieved in our boy/men’s program where WA competed in every final (gold medal match) over the last 14 months, winning 2 golds. The engagement of specialist coaches for goal keeping and drag flicking is providing substantial improvements in these vital areas of our game, these programs will be expanded and enhanced in 2016.

At the time of writing this report, both Whitfords Hockey Club and Old Guildford Mundaring Hockey Club turfs are under construction. The OGMHC turf will be ready for competition in early May 2016 and the Whitfords turf will be ready for the start of the 2017 season. This plus the full affiliation of the UWA turf 2 for Hockey in 2016 will result in an easing of congestion for both matches and training in the coming season.

Successful initiatives in 2015 included: • Development of the “All Stars “concept - with a number of these matches being played between our AHL teams the Thundersticks and Diamonds against development squad athletes. Thanks to Normandie Foods, Jeremy Walsh and Project Neon’s Cam Fairbrother for providing financial support for these athletes. • The pre-season cup competition was run over the months of February/March of 2015 and provided the opportunity for clubs and athletes to fine tune themselves prior to the commencement of the season proper. In 2016 the competition will be expanded to include a 1st division women’s side and a cup competition to cater for men’s and women’s’ 3rd division sides.

The year to come in 2016 will be action packed with: • The Hockeyroos and Kookaburras preparing for the Rio Olympics; • Scheduled tours by the Great Britain women’s side in February and then Great Britain men’s team in May; • The first of 3 years of the Australian Hockey League with both men’s and women’s games being held in Perth in October; and • The year ending with an innovative tour and competition between Australia men’s and women’s and the Dutch men’s and women’s sides in December.

The Board and management of Hockey WA have recognised the many challenges that still face the sport, including interactions with regional centres, facility development to match increasing demand, increased competitions by other sports in primary school engagement and the generation of income to support and offset increasing costs. To this end Hockey WA has been working on a comprehensive strategic plan to take the organisation and the sport through to the 2020s.

Finally I wish to thank the Board of Hockey WA for their countless hours of volunteering, the management and staff of Hockey WA for their efforts and to the hockey community for their contribution to what has been a very successful year in 2015 and I look forward to consolidating these gains in 2016.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Churack Chief Executive Officer

FACILITIES & INFRASTRUCTURE 2015 was a busy year at the Perth Hockey Stadium. We hosted several events throughout the year, with the key highlights being the National Schools Sport Tournament; Kookaburras v Malaysia and Hockeyroos v Korea.

The first stage of the Curtin Master Plan is in full swing with some major developments within Curtin University campus. A new 500 bay parking lot and new road is currently being constructed between Kent Street and the main campus. The new road is running through the middle of the old Barblett Oval and therefore, unfortunately, we will have no longer have access to Barblett Oval for warm up or training. New access routes to PHS and progress reports on the developments on the Curtin Campus will be on our website for your information. We have been assured by Curtin University that the access to Perth Hockey Stadium will not be compromised at any stage during the construction process.

In June, PHS welcomed the CBH Country Men’s and Women’s tournaments to town. These championships are always well supported by our country associations and offer a fantastic opportunity for regional players to compete. This year entailed a revised format and additional venues, both of which we believe enhanced the success of the event. Following the recent national tender process, PHS have been awarded with the hosting the 2016 Men’s and Women’s AHL in Perth. The men’s and women’s Australian Hockey League (AHL) events will be held together in Perth with the Under 13 Australian Championships continuing its alignment with the AHL. This will be a fantastic event for the city of Perth. This festival of Hockey starts on 29 September with finals being played on 9 October.

A lack of turf facilities are still an ongoing challenge and is a key area of focus in the new Hockey WA Strategic Plan. PHS and other turf venues in the Perth Metro are currently running at full capacity for training and games during the season. There are currently more than eleven feasibility studies and initial discussions by clubs around the development of more hockey turfs. Unfortunately, the State Government recently revealed the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) would be cut from $20 million to $7 million for the 2016-17 financial year. This decision by the State Government will have an effect on the establishment of new hockey facilities in WA in the future.

On the positive side, two additional turf facilities will be completed in the next two years, with Guildford Grammar School (2016) and Whitfords Hockey Club (2017). This will give more teams the opportunity to train and play on turf.

The challenge always facing us is to balance the necessary improvements, replacements and general upgrades to maintain a World class facility at PHS and to do this within budgetary parameters. With the ongoing support of the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR), we have managed to continue with the long term maintenance plan for PHS. DSR is currently doing a Business Plan for the Perth Hockey Stadium with a specific focus of the Curtin University lease and the location agreement with the Hockey Australia High Performance Programmes.

Thanks must go to our volunteers and staff who dedicated many hours over the past season to ensure that Perth Hockey Stadium continued to offer a high quality and enjoyable experience for the West Australian Hockey community and continues to be regarded as the no.1 Hockey facility in Australia.

HIGH PERFORMANCE

2015 has been a year of consolidating the work done over the last 18 months on enhancing and expanding our High Performance pathway to improve the performances of our state teams and our player development and performance levels. We have continued the process of working through the review facilitated by the Department of Sport and Recreation and have begun to secure the foundations for a stronger future.

A major focus of the pathway is to continue to provide opportunities for more athletes and coaches to contribute to and develop within our High Performance landscape. And to ensure progression and identification of talent is fluent and merit based.

The HEAT (Holistic Elite Athlete Training) Program has entered its 2nd year with 11 athletes already earning scholarships with WAIS from the program. In 2015 our WA U18 teams finished 1st in the men and second in the women with 11 HEAT athletes selected into the Australian Futures program from the tournament, the most of any state in the country. The program is already having a big impact.

The program gets great support from Curtin University where all HEAT athletes train in their world class gym facilities often alongside the National Program athletes. Other enhancements to the program into 2016 include the additions of Tom Wickham current Thundersticks striker as the Head Coach, Nick Budgeon as a drag flicking specialist coach and Leon Hayward as the Goalkeeping coach. The program continues to be supported by a fantastic group of volunteers covering support coaching, functional movement, running technique, physiology, strength and conditioning and athlete management services.

Hockey WA’s unique initiative the Talent Accelerant Program (TAP) now enters its 3rd year with the program growing from strength to strength, 60 athletes began the program in 2013 with 140 athletes now supported across different levels and focuses including goalkeeping specific programs managed by . 14 current WAIS athletes, many of whom are current National Junior athletes have come through the TAP program. It has also had a significant impact on our state team performances and on our clubs with a surge of young stars making their way into and having an impact on the MTL. The programs focuses have adapted and evolved over the first few years with a major focus currently based on integrating basic skill development into game sense opportunities and on developing cultural behaviours and habits in line with Hockey WA values and the capacity for athletes to develop more effectively.

Work continues around integration of country athletes into the High Performance pathway with SWAS being utilised to pilot a decentralised TAP program. Athletes are developed in line with the training programs and methodology utilised for the centralised program. Athletes also have access to sessions with TAP athletes in Perth and HEAT coaching staff visit the Southwest to conduct sessions on a monthly basis. Adding to this there are now 9 HEAT full scholarship athletes based in the Southwest and Peel regions, athletes train in their home environments and access HEAT staff support and training support in Perth when viable and prioritized. Tracey Vanderlaan, the HEAT strength and conditioning Head Coach whom manages the Peel Academy program, writes and manages all of the programs for HEAT athletes in Perth and the Southwest. This is an approach that we will continue to look to expand with other regions as the programs are consolidated. There are also athletes from historical country strongholds like Narrogin and Geraldton accessing the centralised TAP environment.

The off-season remains a priority part of the year for our High Performance programs, with the in-season period continuing to be a difficult balancing act for many, our priorities remain on our state team programs and on supplementing individual athlete programs whilst integrating their programs into club and school activities. Athlete load management and balance remains a priority and an area we are working on with Hockey Australia to align with National systems.

The process of implementing the Selection / Identification Advisory Group (SIAG) has gained momentum this year with a group of coaches involved in developing processes and assisting with selection and identification of athletes through the year. 2016 will see the full implementation of what will become a scouting network and safety net to ensure there is coverage and knowledge across the state relating to all High Performance opportunities going forward.

In 2015 both of our AHL teams were in a regeneration phase after long periods of sustained success. Both of these developing teams acquitted themselves well with the Diamonds unfortunately failing to make the medal round, finishing 5th, but the Thundersticks, with 8 debutants surprised many by reaching a grand final and pushing the heavy favourites Queensland with a 2-1 loss. HEAT athletes 16 year old Coby Green and 17 year old both made their debuts and impressed in their first AHL. With next year’s AHL men’s and women’s tournaments in Perth it will be an exciting period for our senior teams as a new generation of players begins to take the mantle of these proud teams in front of home crowds.

Our men’s state team program won gold medals at the U15 and U18 National championships and our U21 and AHL teams won silver medals. After two poor years on the National stage signs are looking good for the future.

In the women’s program there is much work to do but the performances of 2015 are much improved also against what were two previous poor years. Our U15 women won silver and our U18 women won bronze, the U21’s started strong and finished in 4th spot; an improvement from the 5th and 6th place finishes from the previous years. We have some fantastic young talent coming through and will continue to work hard to regenerate our top teams by developing our juniors.

2015 has been a year of consolidation and also a year of success for our High Performance Program, we would like to thank the countless volunteers and the community for their support and to our athletes and High performance staff for their hard work and commitment. The support and belief from our board and Peter Churack our CEO has been generous and we look forward to continuing to repay the faith.

Participation

During 2015 Hockey WA re-established a club linked metropolitan schools program, providing more than 4000 hockey experiences for children in their school context. In addition to our own programs the introduction of the Sporting Schools Program facilitated an additional 1250 experiences across WA.

Connecting Schools to clubs and associations will continue to be a focus for 2016. Detailed analysis of the participation data for the 2015 Metropolitan area supports and guides our push into the Eastern Metropolitan corridor to ensure we are supporting sustainable and robust participation programs. At the close of 2015 we have a structured engagement plan for clubs in the eastern corridor and look forward to delivering those outcomes in 2016.

During 2016 we will be targeting Primary aged children through initial engagement programs, providing opportunities to engage with hockey through excursions. These programs will be developed in modular format to facilitate us sharing best practice with clubs and regional associations.

During 2015 Hockey WA has revitalised the pathway process for the U13 cohort. Following broad community and stakeholder consultation we were supported in our mandate for change. The introduction of this user pay process has allowed us to double the number of opportunities for athletes, both within the metro area and country areas. In addition to the increased participation in pathways we have increased engagement with Regional Associations and in 2016 look forward to taking this program to the Great Southern. During 2016 we will expand this process into the U15 pathway.

Our strategic intent for 2016 is to support and develop significant and sustainable connections between schools and clubs. We look forward to working with ACPHER to deliver training to Primary and High School sports teachers and with network sports teacher groups to further support the growth of our sport in schools, in addition to working directly with school aged children.

COMPETITIONS & EVENTS

The Competition & Events (C&E) department has had an exciting and challenging year. It has been a year of growth and consolidation of existing and new programs. The competition looks to be sustainable to produce teams and clubs that will have long term benefits for our game.

The Melville Toyota Leagues continue to present a very positive image to our own hockey community. Most of our hockey followers have been enthused and entertained by the way our teams play and contribute to the development and support of hockey in our metropolitan areas.

Following on from previous ventures to Albany and Geraldton, the Melville Toyota League brand was further extended to the south-west regional area of WA, where Busselton hosted the 2015 Regional Round. Being able to showcase hockey at such a high level is a great opportunity to get hockey out to the wider community and hopefully encourage new members, whilst motivating current players to aspire to greater achievements.

Additional turf facilities enable Hockey WA to continue to grow forward, allowing a greater cohort of grades to be played on artificial surfaces. This contributes greatly to the growth and stability in club numbers.

After a comprehensive review of the 2014 event model and consequently restricted access to grass roots facilities, Hockey WA revised the format for the 2015 event season. The format included an all turf based competition for Junior Club Championships, and this format was extended to the Men’s Country Championships. A greater streamlined nomination and reporting system with high accessibility was introduced, whereby all events were hosted online via IMG. A positive and important step forward for Hockey WA to remain progressive and all inclusive. From an operation point of view the communication between Hockey WA and the clubs continues to be consistent and informative.

I would like to recognise the many volunteers within our clubs and committees for their valued support. I’d like to specifically thank the members of the Junior Competitions Advisory Group (JCAG), Officiating Advisory Group (OAG) and the Indoor Advisory Group (IAG). The C&E department have been extremely well supported by a knowledgeable and passionate group of people. The cooperation and commitment of our Advisory Groups has ensured that our membership have received informative, structured, strategic and professional assistance. It is thanks to your combined efforts that the staff members of the C&E department are able to perform at their best operationally. Once more the collaborative approach will see fantastic results moving forward.

Also a special thank you to the Appointments Advisory Group (AAG) for improving the support around umpire and technical development, retention and appointments, at both senior and junior levels.

We have had an outstanding contribution from key officials on a state, national and international level. Our growing presence at the highest level continues to shine through on the world stage with three of our most experienced officials confirmed on the 2016 Rio Olympic panels; in Tammy Standley (technical), Murray Grime (umpire) and Melissa Trivic (umpire).

The 2015 Indoor season is running smoothly at Lumen Christi College. There are 26 senior teams competing across 4 divisions and 18 junior teams across 3 divisions.

Junior Club Championships ran well with a total of 28 teams competing. Winners U18 Boys – Vic Park Winners U18 Girls – Vic Park Winners U15 Boys – UWA Winners U15 Girls – Lions

Team numbers on the whole for indoor are slightly down this year. A common inhibiting factor seems to be location and the travel time for participants. We are now working on securing a more central venue for the 2016 season.

The C&E department is well placed to continue the success of this year and tasked with taking it to another level.

OFFICIATING ADVISORY GROUP

2015 saw the reintroduction of a group dedicated to the support and development of our officials thanks to the efforts of Grant Mitton and a few other dedicated members of our hockey community.

The Officiating Advisory Group came together with experienced members from elite umpiring, umpiring development (senior and junior), allocations, regional umpiring and technical.

The group faced a number of challenges along the way with the age old issues of umpire abuse, equity in allocations, standard and quality of umpires, quantity of umpires and officiating pathways amongst them.

Discussions were robust and whilst we did not feel as if we achieved as much as we had hoped, we were able to consolidate a number of mat- ters and set a framework for the group to continue with in 2016.

At the conclusion of the season the group worked with HWA President - Phil Nillsen and facilitated a workshop with all interested officials to discuss and provide feedback on what worked, what we needed to do better and what innovations we could consider for 2016. The information gathered was very useful and will be distributed to all officials in late 2015/early 2016.

I’d like to thank my fellow OAG members - Sarah Allanson, David Sutherland, John Ward and Michael Waite for their passion and commit- ment to this important aspect of our treasured sport and to HWA Chief Executive- Peter Churack and Shayley McGurk-Davey who acted as the group’s Association Liaison for their support and guidance.

2015 once again saw a number of our West Australian hockey community undertaking Officiating & Tournament Director duties at State, National and International levels and I’d like to acknowledge them here:

Tammy Lugg; Melissa Trivic; Murray Grime; Shayley McGurk-Davy; Jordan Moore; Kuk Hee Kim; Kim Todd; Lorna Woodley; Zoe Nicol; Carl Mueller; Scott Embry; Aidan Elliot; Sarah Allanson; Tahlya Sleep; James Cameron.

Congratulations also to the following people who received officiating awards at the HWA dinner: Ian Lugg; Melissa Trivic; Ed Welch; Jade Vorenberg; Kyle Bullock; James Cameron; Jordan Moore & Briony Clark

In closing, I would like to thank all our officials at all levels for your dedication to our sport and for continuing to put yourself out there in some- times very difficult and trying circumstances - our sport owes you a huge debt of gratitude.

Yours in Hockey,

Ceri Writer Convenor - OAG

MASTERS

The WA Masters Hockey Committee provides recommendations to Hockey WA on Masters Hockey policy and processes with respect to local competitions and WA State Masters Teams. A significant responsibility is the selection of players and officials, and the logistics and coordination of teams, for the annual Australian Women’s and Men’s Masters Championships.

I wish to pay tribute to the very considerable work done by the WA Masters Hockey Committee throughout 2015. The essential work of the Committee commenced with a Strategic Planning Session held in February that was also attended by the President and the CEO of Hockey WA. The strategic discussion included participation in Masters Hockey, engagement with Hockey WA, Australian Championships performance and the availability of synthetic turf surfaces for Masters Hockey. The Strategic Intent which emerged from these discussions included: • Restructuring the Women’s Midweek Competition; • Establishing a Women’s Midweek Daytime hockey competition; • Revising the WA Masters Hockey Charter; • Changing eligibility criteria for nomination to State Teams; and, • Improving access to synthetic turfs for Masters Competitions, selection trials and training.

The WA Masters Hockey Charter has been revised and approved by the board of Hockey WA and now more appropriately reflects the key roles and responsibilities of the WA Masters Hockey Committee. There is progress in each area of strategic intent, some more than others, with more work to be done in 2016, especially with respect to establishing a Women’s Daytime Competition to complement Wednesday Men’s Masters.

Selection of WA Masters Hockey State Teams’ coaches and managers, booking of accommodation and travel are key activities performed during December to February when hockey is in recess so that State Player selection trials can occur during May-June. The Committee also provides advice to Hockey WA on the Local WA Winter Masters Competition, especially team grading, permits and related competitions issues. It continues to develop and improve its policies and procedures especially concerning Masters State Team Selection Policies and Managers Procedures based on recent experience from participation in Australian Championships.

Members of the WA Masters Hockey Committee have specific portfolio responsibilities including State Teams, Local Competitions and Finance. Committee Members during the year were Bill Campbell, Allison Rieck, Glenys Chinnery, Jill van Duuren, Keith Gilbride, Peter Connolly, Len Collier, John Heath, and Sinead French-Bluhm with Graham Newson as Secretary to the Committee. Glenys Chinnery resigned during the year and Bill Campbell, Allison Rieck and Len Collier retire in December and do not offer themselves for re-election with Peter Westlund and Sinead French-Bluhm retiring and seeking re-election in December. I record the significant appreciation of the WA Masters Hockey community for the tireless work of Bill Campbell who has served on the Committee for 12 years. Significant achievements include Chairing the Organising Committees of the 2006 and 2014 Australian Men’s Masters Championships in Perth, both very successful in financial and competitive terms.

Thirty-Four teams took the field in four divisions of the Women’s Wednesday Night Masters Competition, an increase of one team on last year. The limited availability of synthetic turfs on Wednesday evening meant that not all team nominations were able to be accepted, although the premier Rae Blue Pennant competition comprised only seven teams. A significant improvement on 2014 was the return to 70 minute games from the hourly timeslots that applied in 2014 as a result of restricted turf availability. The WA Masters Hockey Committee continues to work with Hockey WA to improve participation in Women’s Masters Hockey which has been one of the fastest growing segments of the hockey com- petition in WA in recent years.

Seventy-Two teams took the field in Men’s Masters Saturday afternoon competitions and 11 teams participated in the Over 40 Midweek Division. Eleven Men’s Masters Teams play on a Wednesday afternoon almost all year round at Perth Hockey Stadium and there is an Over 65 competition played on Saturday at Perry Lakes for most of the year. These Men’s Masters Hockey competitions provide the maximum opportunity for players to enjoy the game of hockey whatever the level of skill, fitness or age.

The WA Masters Hockey Committee wishes to especially acknowledge its deep gratitude to the coaches and managers of the combined Women’s and Men’s Masters Teams participating in the 2015 Australian Masters Hockey Championships. The significant commitment of time and energy in coaching, training, managing, resourcing and logistics for each of the teams is a primary reason why WA Masters teams perform so well at the Australian Championships each year.

The Women’s Australian Masters Championships was played in Brisbane and WA Masters Hockey fielded teams in Over 35 through to Over 60 divisions. Results for the Championships were Over 35, 7th; Over 40, 2nd; Over 45, Gold Medal; Over 50, 3rd; Over 55, 6th; and Over 60, 2nd. There were 14 players from Western Australian selected to play in the Australian Women’s Masters Teams for the 2016 FIH Masters World Cup to be played in Canberra in March-April. Congratulations also go to Allison Rieck who was appointed Coach of the Australian Over 50 Team.

The Western Australian Hockey Association (Inc.) 16 The Western Australian Hockey Association (Inc.) Reports

The Men’s Australian Masters Championships were played in Cairns. Nine teams in from Over 40 through to Over 70 Divisions were entered in the Championships together with a WA/WA Country combined team in the Over 35 Division. WA won Gold Medals in Over 40 and Over 50, and Over 55/2 Divisions and a Silver Medal in the Over 55 Division. Again, many players, coaches and managers were selected in Australian Teams to participate in the in 2016 FIH Masters World Cup to be played in Canberra and Newcastle. Congratulations to all successful WA teams and Australian selected players.

Next year’s Australian Masters Hockey Championships are to be held for Women in and for Men in Adelaide.

Finally, I would like to thank the WA Masters Hockey Community for its support of the WA Masters Committee and its work. I think that the Committee makes a significant contribution to the development of Masters Hockey in WA, and hockey generally, with limited resources. We could not deliver the results we do without the support and assistance of Hockey WA and I would like to acknowledge President Phil Nillsen and the Board of Hockey WA and CEO Peter Churack and staff for their support and assistance throughout the year.

2016 presents the WA Masters Committee with the significant challenge of ensuring equality of opportunity for synthetic turf usage both for its Men’s and Women’s Midweek Masters Competitions and in selecting and training somewhere in the order of 15 teams for the Australian Masters Hockey Championships. In addition, there is the challenge of continuing to implement our Strategic Plan, revised as necessary, to ensure that the WA Masters Hockey Committee’s activities meet the needs of Masters Hockey players to participate in the game of hockey at all levels.

WAIS WOMENS REPORT

In February 2015 Kathryn Slattery was elevated to the full time national training program of Hockey Australia. The first Western Australian female to do so since Jayde Taylor. Kathryn achieved this on the back of her senior international debut against New Zealand in November 2014, which culminated in her first senior tournament at the 2014 Champion’s Trophy.

Kathryn joined Ash Nelson for several international events in 2015, most notably the World League 3 Semi Finals and the Oceania Series. Both athletes are now preparing and hopeful of selection for World League Finals in Argentina.

Penny Squibb and Kyra Flynn joined Ash and Kathryn in a three (3) team, six (6) match event, consisting of two balanced Australian teams and a full Korean senior team. The event was played in Perth in August, and gave the national development squad members invaluable international experience.

Aleisha Power was selected to tour Argentina with the National Junior Team in October of this year. Aleisha played in all six matches against the Argentine national junior team in an incredibly competitive junior test series. This was the first step for the national junior program in its preparation for the 2016 Junior World Cup to be held in Chile.

2015 was a transitional year in many respects. As senior squad members finalised their involvement in the national pathway, new athletes were awarded scholarships based on their performances at various under age national tournaments throughout the year. In all, 8 new athletes have joined the WAIS program to join the 6 returning members for 2015 and 2016.

This succession points to the strong impact the HEAT and TAP programs are now having in the development of the WA athlete base and their readiness to begin their journey to the national squads especially the futures and junior programs. These athletes enjoy a well-integrated training program between the organisations of HWA and WAIS, encouraging a balanced exposure to all aspects of athlete development and preparation.

The majority of these athletes will be involved in the national junior activities held on the Gold Coast in January 2016. The futures camp runs for one week for those selected at the U18 National Championships. This will be followed by the Oceania Test Series for juniors against New Zealand. WA will have five athletes participating in both events.

Finally, WAIS moved to their new High Performance Service Centre (HPSC) in April 2015. It a state of the art training centre that has world class strength, recovery, and acclimatisation facilities for its athletes to use every day.

2016 offers great opportunity for hard work and further development as the next wave of WA athletes look take to take their chance on the pathway to national representation.

BUSSELTON HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

2015 was another successful season for Busselton with both Men’s and Women’s SWL teams making the grand final for the second year in a row. Unfortunately neither was able to bring home the trophy.

The 2015 season concluded on the weekend of October 10 & 11 with our Masters Carnival. Once again we hosted 30 teams from the Great Southern, South West and Perth Metro areas. The weather proved a bit warm, but all teams had an enjoyable weekend of hockey and socialising.

UPPER GREAT SOUTHERN HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The Upper Great Southern Hockey Association had another exceptionally successful year in 2015, the last on our existing turf. The Narrogin Junior Carnival was super well attended with 47 teams representing their associations. We again held the Men’s State Country vs UGSHA Presi- dent’s XI game which attracted a crowd of at least 1000 people. Our juniors also did exceptionally well, with above-average state selections which we are extremely proud of.

The 2016 season looks set to be a show-stopper with a number of initiatives taking place in our association. It will be the first year on our new Tiger Turf, a major achievement for hockey in the region given the majority of the significant cost was raised by our association. We hope to host a Premier League game early next year as the curtain raiser to the unveiling of the new turf. Also in the pipelines is the development of a Men’s Country Premier League, a competition hosted by the UGSHA to showcase the talent that the country has to offer.
