They are portrayed as never so happy as when they are preaching, and so it is not sUrprising that a centUry later in 1853 W. J. Conybeare caricatUred the evangelical clergyman as being ‘oUt of his element in a parish … what he likes is, not a parish, bUt a congregation. The possession of a chapel in a large town, which he may fill with his disciples, is his idea of clerical UsefUlness’. 2 This statement may reflect the fact that at that time the rise of Anglo- Catholicism and introdUction of the trappings of the Unreformed ChUrch of Rome had caUsed many evangelical lay people to petition for a chUrch where the style of worship woUld continUe to reflect the simplicity of the Book of Common Prayer. In many cases bishops were relUctant to allow new parishes to be carved oUt of the existing ones, and so if we take the case of Jesmond Parish ChUrch in Newcastle it was initially proposed that the new chUrch shoUld be foUnded as a proprietary chapel. Similarly, at the other end of the coUntry, when an evangelical philanthropist desired to endow a chUrch, vicarage and school in the parish of Ware becaUse the incUmbent had adopted Anglo-Catholic practices, the diocesan aUthorities initially sUggested that a proprietary chapel woUld be preferable. -

RUNAWAY WIVES: HUSBAND DESERTION IN MEDIEVAL ENGLAND By Sara Butler Loyola University New Orleans Scholars of the medieval family would generally agree that the lot of the me- dieval wife was not an easy one. Medieval husbands held the upper hand in the power relationship, both legally and socially. Although Lawrence Stone's view of niarried life in the Middle Ages as "brutal and often hostile, with little communication, [and] much wife-beating" has since been called into question, more recent historians have still painted a somewhat unflattering picture.' Ju- dith Bennett writes that "[m]edieval people thought of conjugality as a hierar- chy headed by a husband who not only controlled his wife's financial assets and public behavior, but also freely enforced his will through physical violence."^ Indeed, she argues that wife-beating was "a normal part of marriage."^ Even Bar- bara Hanawalt, who has optimistically described peasant marriage in medieval England as a partnership, still concedes that occasional violence was acceptable and expected in marriage.'' What is more, the rules of coverture, which adhered to the biblical principal of husband and wife as one flesh represented at law by the husband, left a wife economically vulnerable. Because all real and movable property legally belonged to the husband as head of the household, a wife who fell out of favor with her husband might well find herself expelled from the family home, without any resources to fall back on.^ From a modern perspective, mari- tal practices hardly provided any sense of reassurance. At a time when families, more often than individuals, took the lead in spousal selection, and inheritance and status were the chief criteria, strong bonds of affection were not guaranteed. -

You will see Peter’s chief symbol (the crossed + keys of Heaven) throughout. It is a cathedral because it is a church where a bishop has his + + throne, or cathedra. It is a metropolitical church Northern because our bishop is also an archbishop, also Province Diocese + of York known as a Metropolitan Primate. ‘Let us Talk’ – Response from Wimborne Minster The responses to the questions below are based on work done in March this year with the Minster PCC. We spent the day together to reflect, discuss, worship and pray as we seek to discern God’s way forward for the Minster in the coming 3‐5 years. For a fuller sense of what is already going on at the Minster; of current projects; and a vision for the future, please see the accompanying ‘Rector’s Report’, delivered at our recent APCM on April 18th 2013. 1. What is the ‘Personality and Character’ of your local church? The Minster combines the desire to be a ‘normal’ parish church with a distinctive and historic ministry to the wider civic communities of Wimborne and East Dorset. As such, it can sometimes appear slightly schizophrenic! At its best, it is prayerful, caring, hospitable, generous and inclusive, benefiting from the gifts of able lay people, professional musicians, an iconic building and the affection of the local community. It has a certain ‘respectability’ which is inviting to many and can be off‐putting to others, but on the whole it succeeds in enabling those who come through its doors – whether pilgrim or visitor – to sense something of the hospitality of God. It enjoys high standards in worship and seeks excellence, but not at the expense of warmth. The downside of these many outward strengths is that its ‘internal’ relationships can sometimes suffer, and people within the congregation can, from time to time, be argumentative and critical in an unconstructive way. -

18 Chapter 1 Julian in Context The contemporary rediscovery of the fourteenth‐century anchoress, Julian of Norwich, as an important mystical writer, theological thinker, and spiritual teacher has inevitably led to a great deal of speculation about her origins and life. Whatever the long‐term value of Julian’s teach- ings, no mystical or theological writing exists on some ideal plane removed from the historical circumstances in which it arose.1 Julian’s possible background and her historical context affect our con- temporary interpretation of what she wrote. Without some awareness of her context, it is all too easy to make Julian an honorary member of our own times or to pick and choose the aspects of her writings that appeal to us or to make overall judgments about her without seeking to honor what she herself intended to communicate in her writings. Who was Julian? Who Julian was, her social background, her education, her life experience prior to becoming an anchoress, when she became an anchoress – even where she was born – are all matters of speculation. The name “Julian” by which she is known is also likely to have been an adopted one. It was quite common for medieval anchorites and anchoresses to assume the name of the church to which their anchorhold (or cell) was physically attached. In COPYRIGHTEDthe case of Julian of Norwich, her MATERIALanchorhold was next to the parish church of St Julian Timberhill in Norwich which survives in reconstructed form to this day. The church has been known by that name since the tenth century but it is not absolutely clear to which St Julian it is dedicated.
