WHEREAS, on June 12, 2010, Emoly West, who competed as Miss Edmond-LibertyFest, accepted the title of Miss Oklahoma 2010; and WHEREAS, Emoly won a preliminary Swimsuit Award and placed fourth runner-up to Miss America 2011; and WHEREAS, Emoly’s platform has been Leadership and Character Development, she is a certified “Character coach”, and her goal as Miss Oklahoma is to help others realize how their everyday choices can have a direct impact on their lives and those around them; and WHEREAS, Emoly is a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma, where she majored in dance performance and minored in broadcast journalism; and WHEREAS, Emoly was homeschooled by her mother, played Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball with the Oklahoma City Storm and founded the Annual HomeSchool Winter Ball; and WHEREAS, as Miss Oklahoma, Emoly is a shining role model for the young women of the State of Oklahoma. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 53RD OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE: THAT the Oklahoma State Senate honors Emoly West in her role as Miss Oklahoma 2010. THAT the Oklahoma State Senate commends and encourages the pursuit of Emoly’s life goals. THAT the Oklahoma State Senate supports Emoly in her efforts of building leadership and character development. THAT a copy of this resolution be distributed to Emoly West, her parents Jack and Stephanie West, and the organizers of the Miss Oklahoma Pageant. Adopted by the Senate the 19th day of April, 2011. HISTORY OF THE OKLAHOMA STATE FAIR SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANTS The Miss Oklahoma State Fair pageant is a qualifier for the Miss America pageant. The first pageant was coordinated by Mr. Robert Yocham and was held during the Fair in 2000. Eight years later, Ms. LaRadius Allen would take over and add the teen pageant. This year’s pageants will be on Saturday, September 7 in the special event area located in the Modern Living Building within State Fair Park. Pageant admission is $10 and parking is free. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 16, 2016 Welcome Home Miss America Parade Set for Saturday, October 22 Miss America Savvy Shields, FHS Graduate in 2013, to be Honored FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.--Savvy Shields, Miss America 2017 and a 2013 graduate of Fayetteville High School, will be welcomed home to Fayetteville with a parade on Saturday, October 22 at 4 p.m. Savvy won the Miss America Pageant on September 11, 2016 and will spend the coming year traveling the country to present her personal platform to encourage people to embrace lifestyles that contribute to their health, as well as serving as the national goodwill ambassador for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Savvy will participate in the "Miss America Welcome Home Parade," which will lead down Dickson Street to the Chi Omega Greek Theatre. There she will make remarks and be joined by Miss Arkansas, Miss Mississippi, Miss South Carolina, Miss Washington, Miss New York, Miss Tennessee, Miss Oklahoma, Miss Alabama, Miss America's Outstanding Teen and Miss Arkansas' Outstanding Teen. FPS Superintendent Dr. Matthew Wendt and Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce Steve Clark will serve as grand marshals for the parade. Students from across the Fayetteville Public Schools will be participating in and attending the parade. Emmy Award-winning game show host Todd Newton and former Miss Wisconsin USA 2009 Alex Wehrley hosted the competition. OK! TV’s Julie Alexandria provided backstage behind-the-scenes commentary from the Baton Rouge River Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Olivia Jordan, a 26-year-old from Tulsa, Oklahoma, has appeared in several national/international commercials and feature films. Olivia is a graduate of Boston University, where she earned a degree in health science. Methodist History, 56:2 (January 2018) MISS AMERICAN METHODIST: TWENTIETH-CENTURY BEAUTY PAGEANTS AS CHRISTIAN MISSION Christopher J. Anderson Since 1921, the Miss America pageant has become a coveted and con- troversial showcase of young women from locations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.1 Contestants have been crowned and marketed as talented, intelligent, and physically attractive. While competing definitions of beauty and sexuality have been intricately woven into the fabric of the pageant since its inception, the spectacle has also functioned as a public stage to broadcast the political, social and religious perspectives of and agen- das for each contestant. Examples include Jean Bartel, who in 1943 used her Miss America victory to promote and sell war bonds to the American public. In 1998, Kate Shindle used her title as a means to bring global awareness to persons with HIV/AIDS, and in 1975 and 1995 Shirley Cothran and Heath- er Whitestone brokered their respective pageants as platforms to propagate their Christian faith.2 The purpose of this essay is to introduce the multiple ways in which twentieth-century beauty contests have functioned as carefully crafted ven- ues that spotlight and promote certain forms of attractiveness alongside the winner’s Christian faith—particularly through the forms of Protestant wom- en’s bodies representing the larger institutional denominational bodies of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Methodist Church and The United Methodist Church. The essay explores the origins of the Miss America pageant and highlights three specific competitions where American Methodists shaped and marketed contests to showcase ideal Methodist women who were phys- ically appealing, vibrant in their Christian faith, and active within their local Methodist church.

Lacey Russ Wins Miss America Outstanding Teen Title 08.28.2010 The reigning Miss SWOSU Outstanding Teen and Miss Oklahoma Outstanding Teen Lacey Russ of Cordell is crowned Miss America Outstanding Teen at Saturday night's (August 28) Miss America Teen Pageant in Orlando (FL). The reigning Miss SWOSU Outstanding Teen and Miss Oklahoma Outstanding Teen Lacey Russ of Cordell won the title of Miss America Outstanding Teen at Saturday night's (August 28) Miss America Teen Pageant in Orlando (FL). Russ won a $30,000 scholarship by winning the title. In addition, she won a $500 preliminary award in evening gown competition and a $500 advertising award. Russ performed a piano solo that was a combination of Bach's Prelude XXI and Beethoven's Sonata Pathetique and spoke of her platform P.U.R.E. Excellence. Russ, who represented the state of Oklahoma as Miss Southwestern Oklahoma State University Outstanding Teen in Weatherford, won the title at the Linda Chapin Theater in the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Russ, a senior at Cordell High School and the daughter of Todd and Khristy Russ, won the Oklahoma title this past June at the Miss Oklahoma Outstanding Teen Pageant. Other top finishers at the Miss America Outstanding Teen Pageant were: first runner- up, Miss Alabama Scarlett Walker; second runner-up, Miss Georgia Camille Sims; third runner-up, Miss Washington Victoria Renard; and fourth runner-up Miss Virginia Courtney Jamison. Debbie Brown, director of the Miss SWOSU Pageants, attended the pageant on Saturday night. Russ won SWOSU's pageant in November 2009 and then won the Miss Oklahoma title.

This dissertation explores how and why many Christians found the organization an institution worthy of partnership with the church. It examines three aspects of Christian involvement in the contest: the long history of beauty pageants, the persistent emphasis on individual physical attractiveness, and the idea of witness in southern evangelical culture. It argues that after 1965, at least two factors enabled the unlikely marriage of Christians and the Miss America Organization: the perceived threat of second-wave feminism and evangelicalism’s increasing desire to engage culture.
