Vol 37 No 11 The WINDSCREEN November 2019

Prez Sez By all accounts the 35th Annual British Car Day was again, "the best show you've ever had". It really was By Wray Lemke well done, the Friday reception on the Spirit of Charleston cruise boat was a huge hit with attendees. Dave and Bob did an amazing job of putting together a really memorable weekend for the Club. So many members helped out with park- ing, setup, and managing things during the day. Special thanks to Maria for the difficult task of taking car of the silent auction tent. Thanks to Peter Wilde for taking up the mantle of audio production; Peter did a wonderful job of interview- ing different attendees so we could hear their interesting stories. He is certainly drafted for that role in the future. Thanks to Andy, Steve Smith, Bob and Maria for helping unload the show gear from the trailer into the storage locker. It all made for a beautiful day for all of us who enjoy the fellowship of British Motor- ing.

We have just returned from a day at the Hilton Head Car Club Showcase. One special focus of the organizers this year was "Women Driving America" to recog- nize women who own and drive their classic cars. Our Club group was organized by Millie Horton and was called "Women on the Move". Club members Susanne Lemke, Irene Breland, Jane Schmidt, and Diane Zender represented the BCCC and were feted with reception, luncheon, and a special tent on the main concourse.

All show exhibitors were given a card to pick their top five favorite cars. The cards were tabulated into the "Top Twenty" out of 230 cars present. Janes Schmidt's AH3000, John Scott with his Morgan, and my MG Magnette were all picked for this award. Two other special awards were presented to Club members. Irene Breland and her Morgan were chosen by noted author Clive Cussler and his wife for the first ever "Clive Cussler" award. Eric Gibeaut received the "Featured Marque" award for his Sunbeam Harrington Le Mans. The BCCC again acquitted itself very well at Hilton Head. It was a beautiful day at a beautiful venue.

It's been a full couple of weeks of show, the Polo event is coming up, as a Club we really have a lot of things to offer.

Until next time,

Safety Fast!

Well,

Wow. Wholly Cow Wow – Don’t know how we’re going to top the 35th BCD, but I do know how much effort went into making it happen (special nod to Dave)! Everything came together with perfect weather for the reception and show. Wonderful participation at both proved all the effort worthwhile. At the end of the day it’s all about the cars, so thank you for bringing them (or trying to), it was a spectacular field.

But wait – There’s More! Now that you’re all warmed up and out of the garage, before you even get to Thanksgiving, there are things to do with your British Iron for the next three weekends! We have some club representatives heading to Hilton Head this weekend, which is worth the drive even if you’re not participat- ing. Closer to home, the Highland Games at Boone Hall are lots of fun, and taking your British Car will get you a free admission pass for each vehicle. The Second weekend is our monthly meeting at the Marina Variety Store, and the third week- end is the Victory Cup Polo and Hot Air Balloon Festival, where we will have a Club Tent with adjacent parking. Now that our show is behind us, don’t be afraid to add up a little mileage while the car’s in tune and the weather’s mild.

See you there!

Bob

P.S. It’s time to renew your membership! Tell your friends and you can renew and/or join on-line!!

35th Annual British Car Day By Dave & Lynn Rosato The 35th Annual British Car Day is in the books! The weather on Friday evening was perfect cruising weather and Saturday turned out to be perfect for showing off our British Beauties! Cookie’s beautiful MGA was selected to be painted for the posters, T shirts and dash plaques, and was the perfect symbol for this day of cars and camaraderie! We had 170 people Friday evening on the Spirit of Charleston to cruise the har- bor in celebration of the Clubs 35th anniversary!! People began arriving very early (traffic was light, for once!) but our last cruiser boarded at exactly 7:30 – you know who you are! :-) It was a balmy evening and an interesting experience to ob- serve our beautiful city from the water, at night! The barbeque dinner, served by Sticky Fingers, was excellent. A slide show played on the ship’s televisions from past British Car Days and Club events…it was a great way to take a walk down memory lane together! Saturday dawned cool and dewy but warmed up very quickly! Set up of the field went smoothly thanks to the effort of dedicated BCC member volunteers and we were ‘off to the races’, well, figuratively, anyway!! We showed 117 beautiful cars that day from a 1947 MGTC to a 2018 Lotus Evora 400!! We were honored to have registrants from many of our surrounding clubs and 8 different states!! The parking team was exceptional, and we fit every single car in the spaces allotted! Even the 6 cars that registered the morning of the show! Peter Wild was our ‘roving reporter’ and was able to share, through owner interviews, the in- teresting stories behind many of the cars. Thanks for a great job, Peter! We ate well thanks to Independent Grounds and Rolled Quesadillas! The Silent Auction tent was filled with interesting items, old and new, and there were lots of great deals to be had! Electronic voting went quickly and well, and the well- deserved ribbons and trophies were awarded by our President, Wray Lemke. All of the winners and their photographs can be found on the club’s website – www.BritishCarClubCharleston.com. You will also find your car’s picture, and pic- tures from the harbor cruise and British Car Day there as well! Do not miss the ‘drone’s eye view’ video that is posted on the website as well!

Thanks to everyone for making the 35th Annual British Car Day a huge success! See you next year! The Windscreen Page 6

Britfest 2019 By Diane Lambert

As Jack and I planned to head to Myrtle Beach for Britfest 2019, the skies opened up, and the rain poured down. Fortunately, this shower only lasted about 15 minutes so I quickly checked the forecast for the Myrtle Beach area, and while it said it was going to be cloudy, there was no rain in sight, so off we went in our ’76 B.

The plan was for those interested in traveling via caravan to meet up at Pier I in Towne Centre in Mt. Pleasant. Since we started a bit later than originally intend- ed (surprise!), we made a quick swing by Pier I. Not finding any travelers there, we proceeded on 17N to the Beach. However, I guess we weren’t too far behind as within about 20 minutes, we caught up with Dave and Lynn Rosato, Tom Me- servey and Steve Smith. Since Jack had recently performed a couple of tweaks to his B, he wanted to run it a bit faster than the group was traveling, so we smiled and waved as we headed past them and looked forward to spending a nice, cool, leisurely day with them.

The BCCC was well represented with seven vehicles: Mike & Beth Grosso – 2014 Mini, Jack Lambert – 1976 MGB, Tom Meservey – 1976 MG Midget, Scott Ram- stadt – 1957 MGA, Dave and Lynn Rosato – 1958 MGA, Steve Smith – 1974 TR6, and Louis and Belle Tripician – 1967 Jaguar XKE 2+2.

The weather cooperated, and there was a nice breeze which kept us reasonably cool throughout the day. The atmosphere was upbeat and welcoming, and the reg- istration and photo sessions were handled seamlessly. The staff was on point di- recting and assisting with parking vehicles in the appropriate areas, and after these preliminary necessities, we were left to enjoy the cars and folks who joined Britfest for the day.

We felt very welcome as we were offered morning refreshments, including pas- tries and good hot coffee which was much welcomed as we were out the door be- fore I could grab a second cup. Enjoying our coffee, we browsed the vehicles, waiting until registration was finished before voting so we could view all of the en- trants, not just the early ones so that everyone had a fair chance.

After lots of chatting and viewing, with a little tummy rumble starting, we were invited to an English Tea where we were offered refreshments by lovely ladies appropriately dressed for the occasion in their tea party dresses, gloves and fas- cinators. It was all very elegant and special, and offered a very nice touch for a little extra welcome.

Instead of a silent auction, the Club held a raffle with approximately 25 assorted baskets filled to the brims with a variety of items. I believe the baskets were generously donated by members, and the proceeds went to the Canine Angels Ser- vice Dogs which is a wonderful organization. There was something for everyone – and I happened to notice that there was no shortage of wine and beer among them. Great fun! Unfortunately, I didn’t win any of the baskets, but there’s al- ways next year! The Windscreen Page 14

Britfest 2019 By Diane Lambert (continued)

There was a 50/50 raffle where I believe the split was well over $200. Not bad for taking a chance with a $1 ticket. The winner was pretty serious as I noted that when he strolled up to pick up his winnings, that he carried a roll of tickets that was pretty long.

There were lots of interesting items raffled off throughout the hour as ballots were being counted, and folks took a break to visit the food truck that was on- site for refreshments.

The time ticked away pretty quickly and before we knew it, it was award time. The winners for each class were called up at the same time, and the plaques awarded as appropriate which made the award presentation very efficient. We were pleased that from our little group, Tom Meservey was the BCCC winner for his 1976 MG Midget. Kudos Tom!

Jack and I decided to visit a couple of antique shops on the drive home as it was still fairly early, and we decided to make the most of the drive. We arrived home about 7:30, enjoyed a light dinner and decided to relax by watching a little bit of Father Brown on BBC.

I want to thank the GSBCC on behalf of the BCCC for their hospitality. Several members also belong to the BCCC, and they worked hard to make the show suc- cessful. I’d say they succeeded in doing so, and I was happy to hear that, after several years of hard work and at times uncooperative weather, they finally hit the 100 registrant mark! It was a good day for all! Congratulations and see you in 2020! The Windscreen Page 15 The Windscreen Page 16

The 2019 Charleston Victory Cup Polo Games and Balloon Exposition Friday and Saturday, November 15-16, 2019

by Bob Brooks

A reminder that the BCCA event at the Victory Polo Cup Games is approaching fast.

The event organizers have extended us complimentary field side parking as well as discounted tickets. We are also allowed to set up our own tent and bring our own food. Each group will be asked to bring food for themselves and some to share with others.

The main event will be Saturday, November 16, and we are asked to have every car in place by 9:00.

Our reduced fee for tickets is $ 18.67 per person. That includes general admis- sion for both days. Balloon rides, upgraded passes, and special events are at addi- tional prices but all with the same 15% discount. There is no parking fee for our group. All of this is a tremendous value as their cheapest field side tent is $ 500.00 and that does not even include admission and parking.

The event is at The Mullet Hall Equestrian Center on Johns Island.

This event is a great opportunity to show our British cars to others, share our fellowship, and dress up for a premiere English sporting event.

I can be reached via email at [email protected]. Or via voice/text at 843-514- 5565. I will ask that each member who plans on attending, or that wants to get any updates, please contact me. I will have a special email list that I will use to coordinate our group's activities.

Wedding with a ‘58 MGA By Dave Rosato A few weeks ago Lynn and I were asked by Frank Rupp and Cynthia Montague if their son Colin could use the MGA as the driveaway car at their wedding at Boone Hall. I of course said YES. If you recall, about a year ago Frank had a bunch of Jenson Healey parts he was trying to get rid of. This is how we met, I offered to help him find a home for them. We’ve been good friends since. The car became quite a feature in the wedding. It was used as the drive-up car, was used in the formal pictures in addition to the driveaway. I loved seeing the car so appreciat- ed by so many people. Here are some pictures.
