    White City Development – 1900 to 2010 An account of a talk given to the London Underground Railway Society at Toynbee Hall by Paul Godwin of TfL on Tuesday 13 April 2006. Introduction Paul Godwin introduced himself as having trained as a Chartered Civil and Environmental engineer, working for Thames Water, and latterly for Transport for London in TfL Property but now as Stations Upgrades Engineer, London Underground. His involvement with the White City project dates back to 2001/2002, and being involved during his life with both water and drainage tunnels and now underground railway tunnels, he felt he could be called a true underground engineer. Overview of the development works The developer of the site is paying London Underground Limited (LUL) a substantial cash and lease sum to be allowed to develop the site and eventually LUL will receive the freehold of the site and a rental income from the tenants on site as well. The development is of 1.3 million square feet and the £1.2bn cost of development includes £150-£200 million to cover the cost of alterations to the London Underground railways and infrastructure, plus changes to road infrastructure, buses and provision for trams. Planning permission has been granted but the developer has submitted applications for higher density retail provision than previously planned, perhaps reflecting the increasing costs of the project. Once the site is completed, freehold will pass to LUL. The Central Line control centre at Wood Lane is part of the development area, and whilst remaining in situ, in use, and unaltered, will disappear from view.

    Wood Lane, 30th January 2018, Steve Marston Introduction I don’t suppose many of you have given much thought to Wood Lane, the road that runs from Shepherd’s bush north. In fact neither would I if it had not been that my place of work was moved to the area, a new research Building attached to the Hammersmith Hospital, some 8 years ago. I had to commute there and so became interested in the area. It’s an area blighted by railways and motorways for well over a century. Until recently, it was place you would pass through on the way out of London: not a place to visit, still less to live there. However in the last 10 years Wood Lane has been transformed into a destination, with vastly improved public transport and is now experiencing an avalanche of building developments. 1 The start- geography. This is Wood Lane on John Roque’s map of 1755. In those days, as now there were only three routes out of London to the west- The Bristol Road through Hammersmith, the Oxford Road through Shepherd’s Bush and the Harrow road through Willesden. Wood Lane runs from the Oxford Road to the Harrow road, but it’s an insignificant lane through open country. Prominent on the map is Wormwood Scrubs -scrubs because only stunted trees grow in the marshy ground- and the end of the North London ridge, the same one that we are on here, slopes up from there. Not shown on this map is Counter’s Creek, draining the area.

    TfL Corporate Archives Research Guides Research Guide No 16: A Brief History of the Central Line The Central line has the distinction of enabling the longest scheduled journey without changing (West Ruislip to Epping, 34 miles). It opened in 1900 as the Central London Railway, between Shepherds Bush and Bank, and received most of its extensions shortly after the Second World War. In the early 1990s, the line was resignalled and received new trains and automatic driving, retaining the train operator for door control and emergencies. Taking as a point Irlande of departure the context and development of ‘memory studies’ in the UK and a brief history of the postcard in that period, it goes on to ask what n° 2 the ‘memory-value’ of the Exhibition is one hundred years on through the analysis of a series of postcard messages sent from the “White City”. - 2009 The research for this article is based partly on a BBC 4 radio programme commissioned for the centenary of the Franco-British Exhibition: “Postcards from the White City”.
