Filmed and set in Melbourne during the month of the Hungry Ghost Festival, when the Vietnamese community venerate their dead, this four-part drama series event from Matchbox Pictures premieres over four consecutive nights, Monday 24 August – Thursday 27 August at 9:30pm on SBS. When a tomb in Vietnam is accidentally opened on the eve of the Hungry Ghost Festival, a vengeful spirit is unleashed, bringing the dead with him. As these spirits wreak havoc across the Vietnamese-Australian community in Melbourne, reclaiming lost loves and exacting revenge, young woman May Le (Văn-Davies) must rediscover her true heritage and accept her destiny to help bring balance to a community still traumatised by war. Hungry Ghosts reflects the extraordinary lived and spiritual stories of the Vietnamese community and explores the inherent trauma passed down from one generation to the next, and how notions of displacement impact human identity – long after the events themselves. CAAP Artist Lab Participants BIOGRAPHIES LENA CRUZ Lena is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Theatre highlights include her debut as Jenny in The Threepenny Opera for Western Australian Opera, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth for Bell Shakespeare, Mother Courage for Belvoir, Monkey- Journey to the West for Theatre of Image, Miss Bell in Fame, Hair, and creating the role of Cynthia in the original production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical. Most recently, she has appeared in STC’s The Wharf Revue. Film and television highlights include starring as Rory Van Dyke in The Wannabes, Margarita in The Night We Called it A Day, Cassandra in Upskirt, Sofia Martinez in Shortland Street, Pet in Bargain Coast, Jody Lim in Dirt Game, Comedy Inc, Watch With Mother, All Saints, The Very Trevor Ashley Show, and Kiki and Kitty. She has co- written and co-starred in the cabarets The Singer’s Guide To The Universe, About Face, and one-woman shows I’m A Stranger Here Myself directed by Tony Sheldon and Bitter Sweet, for which she was nominated for the Sydney Fringe Festival Drum Media Show-Stopping Individual Performance Award and the Best Of People’s Choice Award. HAPPY FERAREN Happy Feraren is a Filipino actor and improviser based in Sydney with 11 years experience. She has performed in over 500 shows in a wide range of improvisational theatre formats both locally and internationally (including Manila, Sydney, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Chicago and New York). In the Philippines, she began as a presenter for national radio and television as well as live events and was a supporting actor in the feature film ‘My Candidate’. -

(Jacques Lecoq, in a letter to alumni, 1998). 79 CHAPTER FOUR INTRODUCTION TO PART TWO. The preceding chapters have been principally concerned with detailing the research matrix which has served as a means of mapping the influence of the Lecoq school on Australian theatre. I have attempted to situate the research process in a particular theoretical context, adopting Alun Munslow's concept of `deconstructionise history as a model. The terms `diaspora' and 'leavening' have been deployed as metaphorical frameworks for engaging with the operations of the word 'influence' as it relates specifically to the present study. An interpretive framework has been constructed using four key elements or features of the Lecoq pedagogy which have functioned as reference points in terms of data collection, analysis and interpretation. These are: creation of original performance material; use of improvisation; a movement-based approach to performance; use of a repertoire of performance styles. These elements or `mapping co-ordinates' have been used as focal points during the interviewing process and have served as reference points for analysis of the interview material and organisation of the narrative presentation. The remainder of the thesis constitutes the narrative interpretation of the primary and secondary source material. This chapter aims to provide a general overview of, and introduction to the research findings. I will firstly outline a demographic profile of Lecoq alumni in Australia. Secondly I will situate the work of alumni, and the influence of their work on Australian theatre within a broader socio-cultural, historical context. -

Third Rex Cramphorn Memorial Lecture Belvoir Street Theatre, Sydney, 23 November 1997 A Passion for Ideas: Black Stage by Rhoda Roberts Jungi Kala Widther, Good Afternoon and welcome and thank you so much for being here on this perfect Bondi Beach day. I would just like to acknowledge the Eora Nation whose land I am standing on and I'd also like to thank the Rex Cramphorn Committee whose members are Neil Armfield, Eamon D'Arcy, Tim Fitzpatrick, Gay McAuley, Derek Nicholson, Jill Smith, Kerry Walker and also a hugely big thanks to the Centre for Performance Studies and in particular Laura Ginters who tried to contact me no end in the last few months. I never actually worked with or knew Rex Cramphorn but I've certainly heard of his work and for me it is a great honour to be standing here to deliver this third memorial lecture. Last year John Romeril entitled his memorial lecture 'Ringing Heaven' and wrote: I utterly condemn the opportunistic and Machiavellian behaviour of the Liberal Party, and not just in these past seven hellish weeks, but for decades. ... God, history repeats itself. As was mentioned, the first lecture was given by Jim Sharman and entitled 'In the Realm of the Imagination'. He goes on to say: Theatre is a tiny realm of the imagination that nonetheless maintains the power to influence our thoughts, our feelings and our actions in the greater realm of human society. When I first began as Artistic Director of the Festival of the Dreaming I was really hoping with all my evangelical upbringing there could be some way I could at least contact heaven and get a few tips from my dad, the late Pastor Frank Roberts, Oodgeroo Noonuccal or perhaps Kevin Gilbert. -
Neil Armfield
Mr Neil Armfield The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon Neil Armfield at the Faculty of Arts graduation ceremony held at 4.00pm on 21 April 2006. Neil Armfield, photo, courtesy UniNews. Citation Professor Masters, I have the honour to present Neil Armfield for admission to the degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa). While Neil Armfield is still only at the midpoint of his brilliant career, he has already made a distinctive contribution to the Arts and Humanities, especially through his work as a director of plays, operas and films, both within Australia and overseas. Neil was born in Sydney and is a graduate of this University, completing his Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English in 1977. While at university he began directing plays for Sydney University Dramatic Society, with such success that he was invited to direct his first professional production for the Nimrod Theatre Company in 1979. This production of David Allen’s Upside Down at the Bottom of the World, a new play about D H Lawrence in Australia, was also a great success and the production was subsequently invited to the 1980 Edinburgh Festival. Neil Armfield became artistic co-director of the Nimrod Theatre Company from 1980-82, confirming his special affinity for new Australian plays with landmark productions of Stephen Sewell’s Traitors and Welcome the Bright World and Louis Nowra’s Inside the Island. In 1983 he was appointed associate director of the Lighthouse Company in Adelaide. He is, however, most strongly associated with the work of Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre, having been a member of Company B since its inception in 1984.
