S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 19TH MAY 2018 Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from for this afternoons NCL Division 2 game. Wigan are currently lying in second place in the table having won five of the eight games they have played to date, 4 points behind us and with a game in hand. Wigan St Judes were formed in 1980 playing in the NWC league before joining the NCL in 1995/96 where they won the division 2 title in their first season. They were also 1st division champions in 2007/08. They moved to their current base in 1991 where they have a clubhouse and 3 pitches and boast teams at every age level from under 7’s through to open age. They have had many players signed to the pro ranks over the years, amongst them , , Mark Smith, Gareth Hock and arguably one of the greatest full backs of all time, Kris Radlinski. It should be a good game today with it being a top of the table clash, hope we do better than our away game in March when we got beat 36 – 18, one of only two defeats for us so far this year. When we met in the 2016 season Wigan took all 4 points by beating us here in June 2016 by 14 – 28 and at their place in September 2016 by 60 – 12. Well done to Tom Bell for completing the Leeds Half Marathon last Sunday and raising funds for Macmillan Nurses at Wheatfields hospice. His time was just over 2 hours, not bad for a fat lad. John Popplewell will be running today’s raffle, please see him for your tickets. IRRIGATION FUND – The deadline for buying a plaque for the irrigation system is 31st May. If you require one to go up on the wall in the foyer please complete a form from behind the bar along with your £50. It is all for a good cause and hopefully we will all see the benefits of the pitch over future years. Installation is due to start on 11th June. See Jon or Tom if you are interested. Have a look at the plaques already in place. CLUB LOTTO - Tickets are on the bar. Only £1 a go to win some cash. Enjoy the game. FORTHCOMING HOME FIXTURES Wednesday 23rd May – Rhinos Ladies U19 v Huddersfield – 7.00pm Saturday 2nd June – Alliance v Normanton – 2.30pm TBC Saturday 2nd June – Academy v Dewsbury Moor – 2.30pm TBC Saturday 9th June – 1st team v Askam – 2.30pm Sunday 10th June – Ladies v Barrow – 2.00pm For junior, youth and ladies games see the club web site WE ARE A FAMILY CLUB SO PLEASE MODERATE YOUR LANGUAGE WHILST WATCHING THE GAME. Registered in England Number 130435 Registered Office Address: Westgate Brewery, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF2 9SW S A VIEW FROM T C A L N R N SA THE SIDELINES INGLEY BY PHIL HODGSON It’s funny how, from time to time, something seems to be `in the air’ in Rugby League which appears to be almost contagious. The latest epidemic to divert us is the number of cards being shown by the men in the middle. I’m penning these notes early on Monday morning, before I’ve had the chance to fully assimilate the action at the weekend, so I may be overstating my theme a tad as I’m only going to cite two matches, but as they were televised games I’m sure that plenty of folk reading this offering will have seen them, and may even have arrived at a similar conclusion. I’m referring, as you may have guessed, to the Ladbrokes ties involving, on Thursday last week, Featherstone Rovers and Hull FC and, on Sunday, Warrington Wolves and Toronto Wolfpack. I’m not going to go too much into whether the sin-binnings or red cards shown in each game were warranted. That’s for the beaks on the RFL’s disciplinary panel to determine. But the fact that Rovers finished with only nine players is remarkable (one more and the match would have had to be abandoned, I believe) and it was a shame that Toronto lost men, because they were firmly in contention until they began to incur the ire of referee Ben Thaler. I said I don’t intend to go too much into the rights and wrongs of the cards, but anyone who has read this column, or my Talking Grassroots offering in each Monday’s League Express, may well be aware of my stance on dissent. I’m no longer involved with an amateur club but if I ever take on the role of secretary again I’ll adopt, for sure, the same approach that I had with Methley Royals, whose players were very aware that I would never try to defend any of them on dissent charges, unless the referee had made it up, which is very unlikely. So it was disappointing to see one or two of the Wolfpack’s players seeking to harangue Mr Thaler; quite what stance Toronto, who were very much in contention until they began to lose their cool, have on the matter will of course be known by the time these notes are read. Rugby League used to pride itself on the respect shown by players towards match officials. Standards have, I think, slipped generally in that regard in recent years but the scenes at Warrington last Sunday were pretty appalling; indeed, as my 23-year-old youngest son said, they could be seen as embarrassing. I’m not too sure I totally agree with him, as the blokes who spoke out of turn were immediately binned, which surely puts Rugby League in a good light compared to soccer, whose players seem to get away with similar behaviour. For me, dissent is out of order simply because it’s wrong; match officials should be given due respect as a matter of course. It’s also, though, counterproductive. Teams that chunter about decisions tend to fall apart (I saw that all too often with Methley’s second team, when I looked after those lads, one or two of whom were a bit gobby if I’m honest); it’s much better to embrace the view that a decision, whether right or wrong, has been made, put it behind you, and get on with the game. I expect Toronto coach Paul Rowley will have been saying something similar to his players over the last few days.
