  • Al Jazeera's Expansion: News Media Moments and Growth in Australia
Al Jazeera’s Expansion: News Media Moments and Growth in Australia PhD thesis by publication, 2017 Scott Bridges Institute of Governance and Policy Analysis University of Canberra ABSTRACT Al Jazeera was launched in 1996 by the government of Qatar as a small terrestrial news channel. In 2016 it is a global media company broadcasting news, sport and entertainment around the world in multiple languages. Devised as an outward- looking news organisation by the small nation’s then new emir, Al Jazeera was, and is, a key part of a larger soft diplomatic and brand-building project — through Al Jazeera, Qatar projects a liberal face to the world and exerts influence in regional and global affairs. Expansion is central to Al Jazeera’s mission as its soft diplomatic goals are only achieved through its audience being put to work on behalf of the state benefactor, much as a commercial broadcaster’s profit is achieved through its audience being put to work on behalf of advertisers. This thesis focuses on Al Jazeera English’s non-conventional expansion into the Australian market, helped along as it was by the channel’s turning point coverage of the 2011 Egyptian protests. This so-called “moment” attracted critical and popular acclaim for the network, especially in markets where there was still widespread suspicion about the Arab network, and it coincided with Al Jazeera’s signing of reciprocal broadcast agreements with the Australian public broadcasters. Through these deals, Al Jazeera has experienced the most success with building a broadcast audience in Australia. After unpacking Al Jazeera English’s Egyptian Revolution “moment”, and problematising the concept, this thesis seeks to formulate a theoretical framework for a news media turning point.

  • Making Equality a Reality 2
MAKING EQUALITY A REALITY 2 Foreword It is clear for all to see how football touches the hearts of millions of people across the globe, regardless of gender, origin, age group, social status or religious belief. This implies a tremendous power. To the point that, if we imbue football with the right principles, these principles will inevitably be mirrored in other walks of life. We know this, and we have been fully committed to embracing equality and inclusion as two of our nurturing principles. And not only through words, but concrete action: such is the reasoning behind this year’s FIFA Conference for Equality and Inclusion and its theme, “Making Equality a Reality”. FIFA moved closer to this reality in February 2016, when it adopted a reformed set of Statutes that positions the promotion of women as an explicit objective and ensures a minimum of six women on the organisation’s strategic “The future of football belongs to body, the FIFA Council. women.” But we went beyond the legal framework. Stronger participation of women in football has become one of the overarching goals that permeate everything that we do. FIFA now has more women than ever in key management positions – starting with our Secretary General, Fatma Samoura. The representation of women on our standing committees, too, has risen to an unprecedented level. For the first time ever, FIFA has a dedicated Women’s 3 Football Division, entrusted with the task of executing a strategy to bring the women’s game into the mainstream. These may not be the definitive solutions yet, but they are concrete steps in the right direction.

  • The Egyptian Military in Post-Mubarak Politics: the Protector Or Prosecutor of the Revolution
THE INSTITUTE FOR MIDDLE EAST STUDIES IMES CAPSTONE PAPER SERIES THE EGYPTIAN MILITARY IN POST-MUBARAK POLITICS: THE PROTECTOR OR PROSECUTOR OF THE REVOLUTION MELISSA BRASHEAR SARA GIRGIS MATTHEW KIMMEL MAY 2012 THE INSTITUTE FOR MIDDLE EAST STUDIES THE ELLIOTT SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY COPYRIGHT OF THE AUTHOR(S), 2012 1 Introduction This study argues that the Egyptian Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) will succeed in enforcing a system of limited political participation for revolutionaries in which it retains the advantage. The Egyptian military, as a whole, will maintain its autonomy despite an ostensible transfer of power to a civilian-led government. The military will utilize repressive tactics, including violence, co-optation, and media manipulation, to maintain a status quo hallmarked by its economic entrenchment and its autonomy from civilian oversight. Historically, the military adapted to political challenges by applying these tactics to establish its hold on power. In light of new authority contained in Parliament and street demonstrations, the military will continue to adapt to challenges posed by these groups. However, this adaptation will ultimately result in the military‘s success, which is defined by its retention of key aspects of power. There are possible scenarios that could invalidate this argument; for example, if the new constitution subjects the military to increased civilian oversight. Another example would involve a second wave of protests, more intense than those on January 25, 2011, that garner an excessively violent military response and lead to an internal conflict and the ultimate collapse of the military‘s rule.
