ANSWER: Queensland's State school principals take a tough line on drugs to ensure students are safe at school. They enforce a zero tolerance policy on drugs in schools. The Department ofEducation supports this view and provides principals with the disciplinary powers they need to uphold their tough stance on illicit drugs in schools. This information has been released as part of the Bligh Govermnent's openness and transparency agenda for schools which is one ofthe best in the nation and far exceeds any other school system in Queensland. Principals can exclude students permanently or suspend them for up to 20 days. Statistics show that in 2010 only 144, or 0.03%, ofQueensland's 486,000 state school students were excluded for possession and/or use ofillicit drugs. Another 199, or 0.04%, received sh01t suspensions and 339, or 0.07%, received long suspensions. Drug education is embedded in Queensland's curriculum. The Department ofEducation and Training's Drug Education and Intervention in Schools policy specifically addresses these issues. Under this policy, principals implement drug education programs within the curriculum to ensure our children are aware ofthe risks posed by drugs and drug use. Teachers use the Queensland Curriculum Assessment and Reporting (QCAR) framework Years 1- 9 Healthy and Physical Education Essential Learnings, the Year 10 Guidelines and the Health Education Senior Syllabus to develop drug education programs. To support teachers, schools, students and parents, DET has a range ofinfonnation about drug education on its website http://education.gld.gov.au/health-safety/promotion/drug education/index.html . The attached table provides information on school djsciplinary absences in state schools for reasons ofsubstance misconduct involving an illicit substance by school for the last three years. The Department's ammal report also provides information on school disciplinary absences in state schools for reasons ofsubstance misconduct involving 'tobacco and other legal substances' or an illicit substance'. www.deta.gld.gov.au/reports/ammal/08-09/pdf/mmual-report-08-09-complete.pdf www.deta.qld.gov.au/publications/ammal-reports/09-1O/index.html School Disciplinary Absences 2008 - 2010 for instances of "Substance Misconduct involving an illicit substance" Count of School Disci !ina Absence Incidents-Full-Time Census Enrolments Abercorn State School 0 16 0 15 0 17 Abergowrle State School 0 26 0 18 0 17 AcaCia Ridge State School 0 358 0 330 <5 283 Agnes Water State School 0 275 0 263 0 254 Airville State School 0 74 0 62 0 63 Aitkenvale State School 0 426 0 437 0 431 Albany Creek State High School <5 1142 <5 1154 0 1158 Albany Creek State School 0190 0 0 0 885 0 856 0 0 0 81 Albany Hills State School 1892 0 0 0 805 815 0 0 0 786 Albert State School 0038 0 0 0 203 169 0 0 0 "159 Aldridge State High School 2017 0 0 0 956 949 0 8 <5 931 Alexandra Bay State School 1963 0 0 0 34 40 0 0 0 45 Alexandra Hills State High School 2175 0 0 0 1400 1389 0 6 0 1354 Alexandra Hills State School 0405 <5 0 0 287 0 0 0 330 0 0 0 311 Algester State School 1866 0 0 0 933 0 0 0 95 0 0 0 949 Allenstown State School 0155 0 0 0 461 <5 0 0 428 0 0 0 408 Alligator Creek State School 0773 0 0 0 439 0 0 0 437 0 0 0 467 Allora P-10 State School 0003 0 0 0 236 0 0 0 230 0 0 0 234 Alloway State School 0430 0 0 0 49 0 0 0 40 0 0 37 Aloomba State School 0870 0 0 0 80 0 0 0 81 0 0 84 Alpha State School 0517 0 0 0 69 0 0 0 67 0 0 62 Amamoor State School 1719 0 0 0 71 0 0 0 78 0 0 0 75 Amberley District State School 0115 0 0 0 201 0 0 0 233 0 0 0 487 mbrose State School 1415 0 0 0 60 0 0 0 64 0 0 0 69 Amiens State School 1629 0 0 0 68 0 0 0 62 0 0 0 71 Anakie State School 0474 0 0 0 93 0 0 0 106 0 0 0 110 Andergrove State School 1572 0 0 0 480 0 0 0 444 0 0 0 408 Annandale State School 0440 0 0 0 1059 0 0 954 0 0 0 921 Applethorpe State School 1294 0 0 0 44 0 0 0 42 0 0 0 37 Aramac State School 0312 0 0 0 57 0 0 0 51 0 0 0 50 Aratula State School 1266 0 0 0 18 0 0 0 23 0 0 0 34 Arcadia Valley State School 0813 0 0 0 9 0 0 0 7 0 0 0 7 Arundel State School 1997 0 0 0 1089 0 0 0 1067 0 0 0 1046 Ascot State School 0296 0 0 0 737 0 0 0 736 0 0 0 750 Ashgrove State School 0186 0 0 0 587 0 0 0 616 0 0 0 644 Ashmore State School 1871 0 0 0 749 0 0 0 . 780 0 0 0 797 Ashwell State School 0512 0 0 0 42 0 0 0 61 0 0 0 60 Aspley East State School 1004 0 0 0 704 0 0 0 737 0 0 0 803 Aspley Special School 3031 0 0 0 53 0 0 0 65 0 0 0 74 Aspley State High School 2076 0 0 0 734 0 <5 0 732 <5 <5 <5 749 Aspley State School 0610 0 0 0 577 0 0 0 604 0 0 0 607 Atherton State High School 2051 0 0 0 945 <5 0 0 949 0 <5 0 872 Atherton State School 0789 0 0 0 630 0 0 0 667 0 0 0 691 Augathella State School 0357 0 0 0 45 0 0 0 42 0 0 0 39 Aviation High 2078 0 0 0 250 0 0 0 357 <5 0 <5 382 Avoca State School 1901 0 0 0 535 0 0 0 549 0 0 0 524 Avondale State School 0572 0 0 0 31 0 0 0 28 0 0 0 32 Ayr East State School 0908 0 0 574 0 0 0 587 0 0 0 582 Ayr State High School 2008 0 0 549 0 0 0 534 0 0 0 500 Ayr State School 0451 0 0 207 0 0 0 185 0 0 0 175 Babinda State School 1466 0 0 246 0 0 0 256 0 <5 0 245 Back Plains State School 0317 0 0 14 0 0 0 16 0 0 0 18 Bajool State School 0906 0 0 46 0 0 0 33 0 0 0 32 Balaclava State School 1689 0 0 301 0 0 0 289 0 0 0 249 0004 Bald Hills State School 0 0 575 0 0 0 60 0 0 0 618 ~.
