    A Feminist Rhetorical Critique of Zombie Apocalypse Television Narrative

    Ohio Communication Journal Volume 52 – October 2014, pp. 64-74 The Walking (Gendered) Dead: A Feminist Rhetorical Critique of Zombie Apocalypse Television Narrative John Greene Michaela D.E. Meyer This essay presents a feminist rhetorical criticism of AMC’s The Walking Dead, exposing how hegemonic gender roles reinforce patriarchy within the series. We connect previous research on horror film and television, particularly in the zombie apocalypse genre, to representations of gender roles in popular culture. Our analysis reveals five categories of gendered representation: sexist rhetoric, division of labor, the role of protector, White male leadership, and the role of the dutiful wife. The Walking Dead narrative features women as incapable of surviving the apocalypse without men, renders them slaves to products of consumption (such as clothing), and ultimately strips them of autonomous decision making. We connect these images to the never-ending process of consumption and creation perpetuated by zombie narratives as representative of our social unease with capitalism, consumerism and its link to gendered identity. Over fifty years after George A. Romero forever changed the horror genre with Night of the Living Dead, 5.3 million viewers watched once again as the dead rose to devour the living in the series premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead (AMC, 2010). The Walking Dead is one of the most-watched pieces of zombie fiction ever created, and is the first that has been successfully launched on cable television. Robert Kirkman, the creator of the graphic novel series on which the show is based, stated that “it’s something that succeeds in movies all the time, but I don’t think anybody has seen survival horror on TV before” (Stelter, 2010).

    LEADING THE WALKING DEAD: PORTRAYALS OF POWER AND AUTHORITY IN THE POST-APOCALYPTIC TELEVISION SHOW by Laura Hudgens A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School at Middle Tennessee State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Mass Communication August 2016 Thesis Committee: Dr. Katherine Foss, Chair Dr. Jane Marcellus Dr. Jason Reineke ii ABSTRACT This multi-method analysis examines how power and authority are portrayed through the characters in The Walking Dead. Five seasons of the show were analyzed to determine the characteristics of those in power. Dialogue is important in understanding how the leaders came to power and how they interact with the people in the group who have no authority. The physical characteristics of the leaders were also examined to better understand who was likely to be in a position of power. In the episodes in the sample, leaders fit into a specific demographic. Most who are portrayed as having authority over the others are Caucasian, middle-aged men, though other characters often show equivalent leadership potential. Women are depicted as incompetent leaders and vulnerable, and traditional gender roles are largely maintained. Findings show that male conformity was most prevalent overall, though instances did decrease over the course of five seasons.     GRAPHIC NOVELS IN YOUR SCHOOL LIBRARY Jesse Karp ILLUSTRATED BY Rush Kress AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CHICAGO 2012 For more than ten years, JESSE KARP has been a school librarian at LREI (Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School), one of Manhattan’s oldest independent schools and a long-standing leader in progressive education. He works with students across the cur- riculum, from beginning readers to high school students, with all kinds of material, includ- ing graphic novels. He regularly reviews graphic novels and picture books for Booklist and contributes to the magazine’s yearly graphic novel best list roundup; he has written articles for Book Links and American Libraries as well. He has delivered seminars on the sequen- tial art form at Pratt Institute and Queens College and teaches a graduate course about the history and analysis of the form at Pratt. He has served as a graphic novel panelist at Book Expo America for two years running and served on YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens committee from 2009 to 2012. He cocreated the education webcomic Dr. Lollipop and is the author of the young adult novel Those That Wake, which is set in Manhattan, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.
