Martin Cloonan Introduction an Attack on the Idea of America
MUSICAL RESPONSES TO SEPTEMBER 11TH: FROM CONSERVATIVE PATRIOTISM TO RADICALISM Martin Cloonan Introduction I want to propose something very simple in this paper: that the attacks which took place on 11 September 2001 were attacks on the very idea of America. This is not a new idea. It was cited by the New York Times soon after the attack and subsequently by the cultural critic Greil Marcus (2002). But what I want to add is that as time went on it became clear that the mu- sical responses which were made were defences of America. However, there were not uniform responses, but diverse ones and that is partly be- cause the idea of America is not settled, but is open to contestation. So what I want to do in the rest of this paper is to first examine notion that the attacks on 11 September were an attack on the idea of America, look briefly at the importance of identity within popular music, chart initial musical reactions to the events and then look at longer term reactions. An attack on the idea of America The attacks on 11 September were strategically chosen to hit the symbols of America as well as the reality of it. The Twin Towers symbolised American economic power, the Pentagon its military might. This was an attack on the psyche of America as well as its buildings and people. Both the targets were attacked for propaganda purposes as much as military ones. What more devastating way could have been found to show rejection of America and all it stands for? But the point I want to note here is that America itself is a contested notion. -

2017 – 2018 Judiciary History Center Annual Report
King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center 2017-2018 Annual Report Statue of Kamehameha I King Kamehameha V Lot Kapuāiwa, grandson of Kamehameha I, ascended the throne in 1863 and was the last Kamehameha to rule the Kingdom of Hawai‘i. As a national leader, Lot made foreign relations and the preservation of independence his primary objectives. His advocacy for Hawaiians inspired a cultural renaissance which included the revival of hula and chant and licensing of medical kāhuna to practice their healing arts. During his reign, Lot commissioned a number of public works including the construction of Ali‘iōlani Hale. In 2000, the Judiciary History Center was renamed to the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center in his honor. History of Ali‘iōlani Hale Historic Ali‘iōlani Hale provides the ideal environment for the Judiciary History Center. Initiated during the reign of Kamehameha V and completed during the reign of Kalākaua, Ali‘iōlani Hale opened its doors in 1874. The Legislature and the Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i were the original occupants of the building. After the overthrow of the Monarchy in 1893, the Legislature moved to ‘Iolani Palace. Ali‘iōlani Hale has remained the home of the Supreme Court for well over 100 years. The National Museum, the first museum in Hawai‘i, opened in Ali‘iōlani Hale in 1874. For many years, the National Museum occupied rooms on the second floor and welcomed visitors to view its fine collection of Hawaiian artifacts. In 1898, the Republic of Hawaiʻi's government transferred ownership of the collection to the Bishop Museum. -

Pang POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Feb 03, 2015 LAST UPDATED: 09:37 a.m. HST, Feb 03, 2015 Halfway into his first term, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell retains job performance approval from more than 2 out of 3 registered voters. The 70 percent approval rating from 322 registered voters, as reported in the latest Hawaii Poll, is statistically unchanged from the 72 percent approval rating that registered voters gave Caldwell on the same question in February 2014. The latest poll was conducted Jan. 13-23 by Ward Research Inc. for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii News Now. This portion of the poll has a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points. The strong approval rating comes despite vocal opposition to Caldwell's policies pushing through sit-lie ordinances addressing homelessness and establishing a dedicated bicycle-only lane on King Street. The results also come as Caldwell solidifies his contentious position to support the extension of the 0.5 percent general excise tax surcharge imposed on Oahu consumers beyond 2021 in order to meet a construction budget shortfall and future needs of Honolulu's rail project. Caldwell said the poll results reaffirm the hard work of his administration and the city's civil servants. -
