She started collecting Barrymore family ephemera as an adolescent during the 1950s and 1960s. The Barrymore family is a prominent American theatrical family. Lionel, Ethel, and John Barrymore are descended from both the Barrymore and Drew families of actors. They were born in Philadelphia (in 1878, 1879, and 1882, respectively) to Maurice Barrymore and Georgiana Drew Barrymore. All three siblings become leading actors of both stage and screen, appearing in a number of plays and films, including Rasputin and the Empress (1933) in which they appeared together. Lionel Barrymore was known for his work as a character actor, and he appeared in around 200 films. Ethel Barrymore was known primarily for her theatrical performances, although she also appeared in several silent films. John Barrymore was well known for his work in both stage and film, particularly the 1922 production of Hamlet in which he starred. John Barrymore died in 1942, followed by Lionel Barrymore in 1954, and Ethel Barrymore in 1959. Scope and Content Collection consists of clippings, stills, a small amount of other ephemera relating to the careers of actors Lionel, Ethel, and John Barrymore and compiled by Sharon Evans Lucchesi. Included are primarily scrapbooks of clippings, publicity photographs and stills, and a small amount of ephemera and books. The collection appears to have been compiled in the 1950s and 1960s. The collector annotated some materials with project titles and dates. The bulk of the content reflects the careers of Lionel Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore, and John Barrymore; however, there is also a very small amount of material relating to other family members. He is most widely known for his animated collage films, which Jonas Mekas has described as, “among the most beautiful short films made today. They are surrounded with love and poetry. His content is subtle, his technique is perfect, his personal style unmistakable.” Tonight’s screening sketches out a sampler of Jordan’s films, starting with Trumpit, a 1950s ‘psychodrama’ starring Stan Brakhage, with sound by Christopher Maclaine; Pink Swine, an anti-art dada collage film set to an early Beatles track; Waterlight the first of Jordan’s “personal/poetic documentaries” made in the 1950s aboard a merchant marine freighter during his days as a wandering flâneur; and Winterlight, a visual poem of the Sonoma County winter landscape.     NEWSLETTER OF THE THEATRE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION Volume 17, Number 1/Volume 17, Number 2 SPECIAL DOUBLE ISSUE Summer/Fa111989 EXHIBITION SURVEYS MANHATTAN'S EARLY THEATRE HISTORY L An exhibition spotlighting three early New York theatres was on view in the Main I Gallery of The New York Public Library at Lincoln Center from February 13, 1990 through March 31, 1990. Focusing on the Park Theatre on Park Row, Niblo's Garden on Broadway and Prince Street, and Wal- lack's, later called the Star, on Broadway and 13th Street, the exhibition attempted to show, through the use of maps, photo- graphic blowups, programs and posters, the richness of the developing New York theatre scene as it moved northward from lower Manhattan. The Park Theatre has been called "the first important theatre in the United States." It opened on January 29, 1798, across from the Commons (the Commons is now City Hall Park-City Hall was built in 1811). The opening production, As You Like It, was presented with some of the fin- est scenery ever seen. The theatre itself, which could accommodate almost 2,000, was most favorably reviewed. It was one of the most substantial buildings erected in the city to that date- the size of the stage was a source of amazement to both cast and audience. In the early nineteenth century, to increase ticket sales, manager Stephen Price introduced the "star sys- tem" (the importation of famous English stars). This kept attendance high but to some extent discouraged the growth of in- digenous talent. In its later days the Park was home to a fine company, which, in addition to performing the classics, pre- sented the work of the emerging American playwrights.
