While the day featured a lot of rain, there was some sunshine as Friends explored the variety of gardens along the way. Special thanks to Nick Alwerdt (below) for the tour of his over five acres of floral display gardens, as well as to our Friends who were troopers despite the weather!

PATTERNS • AUGUST 2018 17 News & Brews packs the house

On June 12, Illinois Newsroom had a full house for the first News & Brews community gathering. Coordinated by Senior Engage- ment Strategist Kristin Walters and held at Riggs Brewery in Urbana, the event featured a discussion on trauma, its effects on children, and how to help children cope. Niala Boodhoo, host of The 21st, led a panel that featured Regina Crider, director of the Youth Family Peer Support Alliance and pastor at Crossroad of Life Community Church; Elizabeth DeGruy, director of special education for Champaign Unit 4 Schools; Karen Simms, founder of Meridian K Consulting; and Lee Gaines, Illinois Newsroom educa- tion reporter. The discussion centered around the long-term effects of trauma on children and the impact of that trauma in the classroom. An audi- ence of parents, teachers, activ- ists, and children furthered the conversation about how schools in Illinois help children cope. Scott Cameron, Illinois News- room’s executive editor, said the discussion of trauma among children and what educators are doing to help families and kids was informative, pow- erful, and empowering. “It was inspiring to see so many com- munity members come together to address this important topic. As journalists, we always hope our work contributes to further discussion and a search for solutions.” Stay tuned to the WILL Radio TV Online Facebook page for more information on future News & Brews events.

WILL Education’s Design Squad visited the Rantoul Multicultural Community Center on June 18. 16 kids participated in the 6-week program entitled “STEAM All Around Us.” The kids learned about recycling and conservation through the nationwide Design Squad curriculum, and creatured animals creatures from recycled packaging. Design Squad is a series of guides and les- son plans to help children solve real-world problems and understand the impact of engineering. A part of PBS Kids, the pro- gram has weekly updates for challenges, videos, and activities to encourage STEAM principles in kids’ everyday lives.
