Support for the Hollywood and Gower Project (19-0571 and 19-0571-S1)

Austin Cyr Aug 1,2019 5:36 PM Posted in group: Clerk-PLUM-Committee

Dear Honorable Members of the City Council PLUM Committee and City Staff,

I understand there are efforts to delay consideration of the Hollywood and Gower project at the Aug. 13 Planning and Land Use Management Committee meeting (19-0571 and 19-0571-S1) due to the developer and the owner of the adjacent Fonda Theater being at odds over the use of an alley between the sites?

This type of molasses is a direct contributor to the housing crisis we find ourselves currently in. I hope that you can arrive at better, stronger judgment and move ahead with this project. A dispute like that is a private matter between two property owners and should not delay approval of a sorely needed 200-unit residential development.

The only way we are going to begin to alleviate our interconnected crises of the ongoing homeless epidemic and housing crisis is by providing more housing on logical locations where no housing exists today. In other words, sensible projects exactly like this one being proposed at Hollywood and Gower.

It's time to move ahead with this project and developing housing in general. This is not a theoretical conversation - people are dying in the streets due to housing being made illegal.

If this wasn't so serious, it would be laughable. Thank you.

Best, Austin

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

I believe development is important for the city of Hollywood, however, so is supporting the rich history and beautiful active historical gems like the Fonda.

Please vote in favor of good terms of easement so the Fonda and the creative and musical community it supports, may continue to thrive.

Many thanks, Melissa Smith

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

The Fonda Theater is one of the best live music venues in Los Angeles. Please ensure that this historic theater continues to bring joy to our city by including an easement through the parking garage of the planned development to the east that will continue to allow musicians and performers the space needed to load their equipment in and out. Preserving the culture that The Fonda Theater brings to that neighborhood and the city at large is exponentially more important than yet another overpriced cookie-cutter development project.

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

I wanted to add my voice to the growing number of people who want to help save and preserve The Fonda.

I have lived in Los Angeles for 53 years and am a HUGE live music fan. I attend concerts at that venue all the time. Plus, I've worked for for 29 years an spend a great deal of time in Hollywood. I have been completely disheartened by what seems like ENDLESS new building that is going on in our city. Gigantic apartment complexes popping up everywhere as if there is zero consideration to the impact on our city quality of life.

I realize the building is not going to stop, but we need to find a way to work together to protect some smaller things...like this venue.

Please, please work to protect the equipment load-in ability of this venue in a more permanent way.

Thank you very much, Lucinda 'Cindy' Walker Google Groups

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

I am sending this e-mail in the spirit of kindly advising you that you should not allow the City of Los Angeles to bulldoze and demolish any more historical buildings and namely The Fonda Theatre being one of the most notable venues still in existence in the Hollywood area!!

I grew up in Los Angeles, and my family has been residing all over the Los Angeles County area since the 1900’s, so you can understand my concern how much it means to preserve any landmarks that have been carefully erected for so many decades.

I do not understand why the head personnel of Los Angeles City are in favor of deconstructing and for "reconstructing” The Fonda Theatre and as well as TOO many original buildings to build yet another, and another and more and more airbnb’s to medium-sized apartment buildings/living/office/spaces and more ugly typical plain condominiums for too many people (often not from here) to reside up and on top of one another. The parking is barely accommodating the individuals who are from here and who reside here. Why are there more buildings - don’t understand since traffic in this town is already heavy and for what to make more $$$$$?!?

It’s very upsetting that The Fonda Theatre may be compromised to cater to more people so that the neighboring individuals can barely enjoy their quality of life.

PLEASE PLEASE STOP TEARING DOWN ALREADY EXISTING LANDMARKS, CONCERT VENUES, ETC., TO GENERATE MORE TRAFFIC AND MORE GREED...

Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

Very truly yours,

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

I am a third generation Angeleno and a current resident of Hollywood. It is astonishing that our local landmark Fonda Theater is being threatened with extinction. This little theater is a gem and a very important element of the culture, history and fabric of Los Angeles. PLEASE do not allow the surrounding development to take away the livelihood of this theater. We need to keep The Fonda in the heart of Hollywood. It is one of the last remaining pieces representing the original heart of Hollywood. If this goes, then what else? I strongly urge you to insist that The Fonda permanent easement that would allow the theatre to have reasonable access to the back of the house, which is essential for loading and unloading.

Thank you so much for your consideration.

Dear Mr. Ibarra, We should be PRESERVING Hollywood NOT destroying it. We are already losing our neighborhood to overdevelopment. Soon, all of the craftsman houses will be gone, along with the charm and uniqueness of the neighborhood. The over population occurring within this district is causing us to lose our quality of living. Please keep the FONDA THEATER alive and a viable roadhouse for the ARTS. We need it more than ever. Make HOLLYWOOD a destination that people actually want to come to and experience something new. We need the theatre to help provide for those enriching experiences . Thank you for your time.

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

We need to keep Hollywood historical and culturally relevant! Please help our community save the Fonda Theater and a piece of Hollywood history. It is a one of a kind venue and has served so many music lovers, young and old, over the years. The Fonda helps build community and stimulates the local economy. The last thing we need are more condos in Hollywood. No locals can afford to live there, and we have enough new construction that interferes with the classic Hollywood experience already. Please save this piece of Hollywood history! Save the Fonda! Thank you!

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

I’d like to help save my community that I have lived in for over 30years. Many fond memories are slowly being lost. Many many Los Angeles landmarks (Good Luck Bar, Coconut Teaser, Rajis, Al’s Bar, Spaceland, Madame Wong’s, The Palomino, Starwood) are quickly disappearing. We should strive to keep these landmarks, and most of all support our music venues and arts buildings/murals in tact for future generations to experience.

So please don’t let greedy corporations shape our community into a cookie cutter society.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

With kind regards:), ~Rhona Rubio Google Groups

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

THIS:

An easement - a passageway through the new development’s parking garage. Contracts like this are common where new developments and historic buildings are neighbors.

The Fonda has created a design for this passageway that would require almost no changes to the apartment tower design. And Trammell Crow/MetLife have expressed a willingness to build it.

But... The Fonda and the developers have serious disagreements about how we use the theatre, how we use the easement, how secure it is over time, and whether or not it is protected from the whims of owners who might want to shut it down. We need a robust easement that is totally protected, not one that’s full of escape clauses.

Dear Mr. Ibarra,

As a resident of Hollywood for the past 27 years, I write you with great concern over the fate of The Fonda Theatre, one of Hollywood’s iconic gems in the boulevard. Without the City’s intervention, we will effectively lose forever a vital part of the spirit of Hollywood.

This is unacceptable!

Artists need to drop off their gear and stage equipment at the back of the theatre. The proposed apartment tower threatens to block their access and jeopardize the theatre’s operation. The Fonda is one of the few historic LA theaters that reinvented itself creatively enough to stay viable and vibrant. So many of us, from different generations and different parts of the city, and of the worid, have enjoyed its rich history and creativity.

Don’t put the future of one of the best music venues in LA in jeopardy!

Without a robust long-term agreement for the continued right to a passageway access through Gower, the fate of Hollywood’s premier music venue is in jeopardy. The Fonda will be landlocked. It will become an endangered species, casting a shadow on the Boulevard.

The City’s help is needed to facilitate that an agreement is reached between The Fonda administrators and the apartment developers Trammell Crow/MetLife that results in a contractual resolution for the protection of this historic building.

Please take action.

Sincerely,

Luis A. Gonzalez Hollywood’s Village Humanitarian Programs Director Church of Scientology International

RE: Preserve the Fonda Theatre Loading Dock Access

Aug 1,2019

Dear PLUM Committee/LA City Council

I am an LAUSD teacher, a 25-year resident of Hollywoodland, and a frequent patron of the Fonda Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. A proposed Met Life /Trammel Crowe development at Gower and Hollywood threatens to choke The Fonda Theatre access to it’s loading dock. This development could damage the culture and mobility of east Hollywood, and to put the future of the best music venue in the city in jeopardy.

First, I hope you have some idea of the importance of the Fonda Theatre to live music in Los Angeles. I hope you have seen the lines around the block and sensed the excitement that precedes each night’s entertainment. The theatre became a lifeline for the music-going community in LA a few years after I moved here - when east Hollywood was a ghost town at night.

Second, the lot to be developed has long been a source of public access and mobility in the neighborhood. Before it was a parking lot, it was a Chevron station. We gassed our cars there, and, if we were lucky, parked there at night on our way to hear music. Since that time, development between Hollywood and Sunset has choked Gower to the point where it is barely passable. We have difficulty exiting/accessing the Beachwood neighborhood each day. Hollywood developers profit on our long-underpriced real estate, our cultural magnetism and our infrastructure and contribute little in return.

Now, a late-arriving development team threatens to further choke our mobility and cripple the Fonda Theatre. This cannot happen for want of access to a working stage loading dock.

East Hollywood is not Glendale, or Century City, or Studio City. We have depth and history and true urban culture.

Please help insure that the music plays on at the Fonda Theatre for generations to come. Keep Hollywood vibrant and whole and mobile.

Isn’t that what good city government is about?

Sincerely,

Findlay Bunting 2953 N. Beachwood Drive Los Angeles, CA 90068 [email protected] Google Groups

Dear PLUM members and staff,

Our city faces a critical housing shortage. And the only way we are going to make a dent in that problem is by building more housing units of all price ranges.

So when a project comes along that proposes to add 220 apartments, including critically needed affordable housing units, to a property current used as a surface parking lot, the appropriate response would be to embrace it.

That’s why I support the project proposed for Hollywood and Gower. It meets a need without creating a negative impact on the surrounding community.

Thank you and please support this project.
