Most Florida lakes fluctuate on a seasonal basis and native wetland species are adapted to this. Begin your plan by selecting an average normal water level (NWL). Listed below are some appro ‐ priate plants for each zone. Zone A— Trees: red maple, green ash ,loblolly bay, dahoon holly, sweetbay, water hickory and sweet gum Shrubs: Virginia willow, pipestem, button bush, climbing aster, wax myrtle, and Walters viburnum Zone B— Bald or po nd cypress and blackgum, scarlet hibiscus, soft rush, canna, iris and sand cord grass in upper half of zone (above NWL), Pickerelweed, arrowhead, and maiden cane in lower half of zone, all planted on minimum 2‐ foot centers Zone C — Pickerelweed, spikerush, and bulrush — planted on minimum 2‐ foot centers (required by permits) Zone D— Bulrush and water lilies
