The presentation is mainly based on two architectural monuments, the All Saints Chapel in the Royal Palace and the Wenceslas Chapel in the S. Vitus Cathedral, following the ways in which both echo essential Jerusalem traditions. The Return to Zion – Views of Jerusalem in Jewish Illuminated Manuscripts from Bohemia Sara Offenberg (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beersheva) The notion of the return to Zion is manifested throughout Jewish history both in texts and images. The hopes for eschatological redemption and the rebuilding of the Temple are apparent in Jewish art from the late antique and up to the modern period. At times the hopes are expressed mostly in the saying of “Next year in Jerusalem” at the end of the Passover Haggadah, and the text is usually accompanied by an image of Jerusalem. The city is designed by the imagination of the patron and the illuminator of the manuscript and thus looks like a medieval or early modern European urban space. In this paper I shall examine this notion in some Hebrew illuminated manuscripts produced in Bohemia. I describe the distinct aesthetics of this art and explain its role in the Zionist nation-building project. Although Jerusalem’s art scene participated significantly in creating a Jewish–Israeli national identity, it has been accorded little or no place in the canon of national art. Adopting a historiographic approach, I focus on the artist Mordecai Ardon and the activities of the New Bezalel School and the Jerusalem Artists Society. Examining texts and artworks associated with these institutions through the prism of migratory aesthetics, I claim that the art made by Jerusalem’s artists was rooted in their diasporic identities as East or Central European Jews, some German-born, others having settled in Germany as children or young adults. These diasporic identities were formed through their everyday lives as members of a Jewish diaspora in a host country—whether that be the Russian Empire, Poland, or Germany. Under their arrival in Palestine, however, the diasporic Jewish identities of these immigrants (many of whom were not initially Zionists) clashed with the Zionist–Jewish identity that was hegemonic in the nascent field of Israeli art.

    12th January to 24th April 2011 The Land of Light and Promise 50 Years Painting Jerusalem and Beyond Ludwig Blum (1891–1974) Jerusalem, Inside the Walls, 1926 Oil on canvas, 81 x 140 cm, Signed and dated, Stern family collection For the first time since being exhibited in London at the Royal Academy and the Fine Art Society in 1938, Ben Uri brings the art of Ludwig Blum to the United Kingdom for his first European Museum survey. The exhibition traces the career of the Czech born Israeli topographical artist Ludwig Blum, who immigrated to Palestine in 1923 and settled in Jerusalem at the age of 32. He was classically trained; first as a young talent under David Khon in Vienna and then, after serving in the First World War, from 1919 at the Academy of Fine Art in Prague. This exhibition of some 35 works traces Blum’s consistent representation of ‘the real’ over half a century of painting the Holy Land and beyond. Jerusalem was ‘his’ city and he never ceased to find inspiration in its architecture, holy places, markets, peoples and the extraordinary changes of light and shadow, which bathes its buildings each day of each season. Blum’s European persona and academic practice never changed in the heat and heart of this very different continent. He is recognised not only as a distinguished artist of the classic mould but also as the finest topographical artist of his time working in the Levant. His was a unique period in history being the 25 years before and after the founding of the State of Israel in 1948.

    CHAGALLTH AND THE CIRCLE OF JEWISH PAINTERS OF THE 20 CENTURY WALLY FINDLAY GALLERIES M ARC C HAGALL (1887 - 1985) MARC CHAGALL was born July 7, 1887, in Vitebsk, Russia. From 1907 to 1910, he studied in St. Petersburg at the Imperial Society for the Protection of the Arts and later with Leon Bakst. In 1910 he moved to Paris, where he was associated with Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay and encountered Fauvism and Cubism. He participated in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in 1912 and held his first solo show in 1914 at Der Sturm Gallery in Berlin. Chagall visited Russia in 1914 and was prevented from returning to Paris by the outbreak of the war. He settled in Vitebsk where he was appointed Commissar for Art in 1918. He founded the Vitebsk Popular Art School and directed it until his resignation in 1920. He moved to Moscow and executed his first stage designs for the State Jewish Chamber Theater. He returned to Paris in 1923 and his first retrospective took place in 1924 at the Galerie Barbazanges-Hodebert, Paris. In 1933, the Kunsthalle Basel held a major retrospective of his work. During World War II, Chagall fled to the United States. The Museum of Modern Art, New York, gave him a retrospective in 1946. He settled permanently in France in 1948 and exhibited in Paris, Amsterdam and London. During 1951, he visited Israel and executed his first sculptures. During the 1960s, Chagall continued to travel widely, often in association with large- scale commissions he received.

    Annual Report 2003 1. Introduction In its eighth year as an independent institution, the Jewish Museum in Prague focused on further developing all areas of its activity. At the same time, however, it had to continue dealing with the restoration of damage caused by the devastating floods of August 2002. Worst affected were the Pinkas Synagogue and the two newly refurbished buildings which have served as the Museum’s administrative and specialised centre since 2001. In total, direct flood damage to the Museum’s real estate amounted to CZK 15.9 million, while damage to movable assets and supplies has been put at CZK 6.3 million. The administrative and specialised centre was brought back into full operation in the first half of 2003, but the Pinkas Synagogue, which houses the memorial to the victims of the Shoah from Bohemia and Moravia, could not be opened to the public until October 2003. A certain amount of minor restoration work on the synagogue is set to continue until March 2004. On account of our due insurance coverage, the support of numerous donors, additional investments and the professionalism of the Museum’s specialist staff, we managed to return all the flood-damaged buildings to their original state, as well as making a number of improvements. The work and supplies that have been completed will make it possible to prevent further damage in case of future flooding and, at the same time, will ensure greater security for visitors. For most of the year tourism remained stagnant, as it has been since the terrorist attacks on America in September 2001.
