he 9th Convocation of Defence Institute of Advanced TTechnology (Deemed University), Girinagar, Pune was held on, May 28, 2017. Shri Arun Jaitley, Raksha Mantri & Chancellor, DIAT presided over the ceremony and delivered the Convocation address. Dr S Christopher, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, Governing Council, DIAT graced the occasion. Dr Surendra Pal, Vice Chancellor, DIAT, welcomed Shri Arun Jaitley Raksha Mantri, Dr S Christopher, Chairman DIAT Governing Council and Secretary, Dept. of Defence R&D, Dr G Satheesh Reddy, SA to RM, Shri Baba N Kalyani and other distinguished guests, graduating students and their parents during the ceremony. A total of 134 graduating students including 18 PhDs, three Master of Science by Research and 113 M Tech students were conferred degrees. A total 312 cadets graduated from the Academy as they passed through the portals of the prestigious Khetrapal Parade Ground. Keeping with the theme, a mass tree plantation drive, also incorporating the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan was organised across the landscapes of the region. Soldiers and school children worked hand in hand and planted 4,300 saplings at various locations in Dras, Kargil, Batalik and Khumbathang, on the otherwise barren hill sides. At Dras, a special water retaining compound, presented by NGO Eco Solutions, was added to the soil around the sapling pits. This would reduce the need for frequent watering and tree tending, as the compound retains 100 times more moisture than normal soil. Flower and tree saplings grown by the Leh based DRDO outfit, Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) were also used during the plantation drive. ndian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Rajkiran saved six grief Istricken lives at sea while it was on a routine patrolling duty ex-Haldia. At about 1430 hrs a partially sunken boat was sighted at about nine nautical miles from Paradip lighthouse. Six persons were seen clinging to the sinking boat as they had no other means of survival. June 16-30, 2017 Sainik Samachar 41 PHOTOCALL Army Inter Command Football Championship 2017-18 was organized under the aegis of Army Sports Control Board from June 5-10, 2017 at 11 Gorkha Rifles Regimental Centre (11GRRC) in Lucknow Cantonment. Maj Gen SK Khanna, Chief Engineer, Central Command was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Brig Mala Singh was conferred upon the Sister Alice Wilkinson Award 2017 at St Stephen Hospital and College at Graduation Ceremony on May 3, 2107. This award was instituted in memory of Sister Alice Wilkinson, a British Nurse who came to India and worked tirelessly for mankind and founded the Nurses’ Training School of the hospital. She devoted her life in charity and died at the age of 92 at St Stephen Hospital. This prestigious award was conferred to Brig Mala Singh by Dr Sudhir Joseph, Director, St Stephen Hospital, in recognition of her outstanding contribution in the Nursing Profession.
