11 Social events Evening city walk When?

Thursday, 7 November 2019, at 18:15. Where? Your guide(s) will wait for you in front of the entrance of the Faculty of Law. The city walk will last approximately 1.5 hours, and will end at the dinner venue – Švicarija. What? Although Ljubljana is a European capital, it is so small that all of its sights can be easily visited on foot – and this is just what we are going to do. We will observe traces left from several different periods in the town: the mediaeval castle, Renaissance and Baroque buildings and churches, and on Miklošičeva Street there are several buildings that were erected following the earthquake of 1895. The contemporary Ljubljana was planned in the first half of the 20th century by the great European architect Jože Plečnik. His works include Tromostovje (), Čevljarski most (Cobblers’ Bridge), the Križanke Auditorium, as well as the Ljubljana Central Market.

12 Conference dinner When?

Thursday, 7 November 2019, at 20:00. Where? Location: Švicarija, Pod turnom 4, 1000 Ljubljana.

Walking distance: 1.700 meters (approx. 30 minutes).

You can go there by yourself; Švicarija is located in the very heart of Ljubljana’s Tivoli Park. Alternatively, our colleagues can guide you there. They will wait for you in front of the entrance of the Faculty of Law at 19:15. You can also join the Evening city walk (it will start at 18:15 in front of the entrance of the Faculty of Law and end at the dinner venue).

The Švicarija Creative Centre operates as part of the International Centre of Graphic Arts. Originally a wooden guest house opened in 1835, Švicarija soon became a popular excursion point for the residents and visitors of Ljubljana. The noted architect Ciril Metod Koch designed and built Tivoli Hotel on the same spot in 1909, which went on to become a well-known gathering place for artists, bohemians and workers. After the Second World War, many renowned Slovenian artists found their work spaces in the building. Today, this tradition continues as the Švicarija Creative Centre provides working and living studios for local artists, and residential spaces for international artists. The Centre is also to be home to a public programme following the notions of “community, art and nature”.

14 What to see In Ljubljana You will be able to see the main sights of Ljubljana on our Evening city walk (7 November 2019). If you want to explore Ljubljana on your own, be sure not to miss: • Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) There is a legend that Jason was the founder of Ljubljana, and he and his Argonauts killed a dragon. This is one of the four dragon statues in the bridge. According to local legends, when a virgin crosses the bridge, the dragons will wag their tails. Some local people have nicknamed this bridge “mother-in-law” because of its fiery nature. • Ljubljana Castle (Ljubljanski grad) The castle stands on Castle Hill above downtown Ljubljana. It is a key landmark of the town. Originally a medieval fortress, it was probably constructed in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 12th century, initially a defence structure. From the first half of the 14th century it became the seat of the lords of , and since the early 19th century it has been used for various other purposes; today it is used as a major cultural venue. The castle is depicted on the city’s coat of arms, along with a dragon on top. • Prešeren Monument (Prešernov spomenik) The monument is a late historicist bronze statue of the Slovene national poet Prešeren. It stands on the eastern side of Prešeren Square. France Prešeren was one of the greatest European Romantic poets. His fervent, heartfelt lyrics, intensely emotional but never merely sentimental, have made him the chief representative of the Romantic school in Slovenia. His legacy in Slovene culture is enormous. He is the national poet. The anniversary of his death, Prešeren Day, is a Slovene cultural holiday. His “Zdravljica” is the national anthem of Slovenia. His image is on the Slovene two-euro coin. The highest Slovene prize for artistic achievements, the Prešeren Award, is named after him. • Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) This is a group of three bridges across the river. It connects Ljubljana’s historical, medieval, town on one bank, and the modern city of Ljubljana on the other. • The Ljubljana Central Market (Osrednja ljubljanska tržnica) The market building, designed by Jože Plečnik, stretches between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, on the right side of the curve of the Ljubljanica River. The market is open daily (except Sundays). It has a flower market at the junction of Pogačar Square and , while the lower level has fish and dried fruit for sale; both levels of the market hall have bakery, dairy and meat stalls. The colonnade at the Triple Bridge end provides shelter for stalls for those selling herbs, spices, and arts and crafts.
