From the central portion of the site worked flint/chert dating to the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic were recovered. Those on the higher ground revealed features dating from the Iron Age to Early Roman periods, including a gully bisected by a linear alignment of pits or post holes of uncertain date. Other post holes from the early Roman periods were also noted. The site was thought to be associated with farmstead activity. Medieval pottery was found across the site. The first phase identified a ditch belonging to the Findern/Pollock cursus. A Bronze Age plano convex flint knife was recovered from another ditch. A large Late Iron Age ditch was also identified along with ditches from Roman period enclosures. The second phase revealed undated ditches and another ditch connected with the cursus. Damage to the deposits by later activity had been confined to a small area of the site, leaving large parts intact. This evaluation was targeted at areas that the preceding evaluations were forced to neglect due to the presence of standing buildings. Suspected Roman defences at the western part of the site were confirmed, characterized by a turf built structure and a robbed-out wall and associated robber trench. A mortared wall was recorded further west. A substantial building in the form of a series of stone walls, pits and post-holes was recorded, with evidence for a threshold and a collection of pottery. The Bath Road overlaid this part of the site, and although partially truncated by the town defences in general the building had been well preserved by the road. Evidence for medieval and post-medieval tanning was also recorded. Three small linear features were recorded and interpreted as possible plough marks. Other linear features identified in a previous excavation were also noted. Roman, medieval and post- medieval occupation evidence was revealed, including disarticulated bone from a Roman pit and early Roman cremation burial. Contemporary boundary and structural activity was noted, as well as Anglo- Saxon pottery and medieval ironworking and horn working evidence. The whole site was overlain by a cobble layer dating to the 18th century and thought to be related to backyard surfaces fronting onto Grange Lane. It follows the valley formed by the Brampton Arm of the River Nene, and runs from the NRDA boundary to the north-west of Northampton into the centre of the town. It is adjacent to the King’s Heath SUE, and incorporates the proposed Strategic Greenspace associated with the development. At its southern end it connects with the Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone. Valley floor scene in the Brampton Arm, as seen from the Rugby-Northampton railway Strategic Green Infrastructure Context (See map 2.1) The Brampton Arm Component is part of the larger Sub-Regional GI Corridor 8 (The Brampton Arm- Northampton to Market Harborough) which continues to the north. It also contributes to Local GI Corridor 6 (Northampton- Daventry) which runs broadly east- west. At its southern end the component connects with Sub-Regional GI Corridors 1 and 2 (The Nene Valley).
