1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp. -

Det är roligt att konstatera att Jazzens Museum i Strömsholm idag är etablerat, omtyckt och välbesökt. Det är fortfarande Europas enda jazzmuseum värt namnet. Mer än 20 000 föremål finns i samlingarna utöver de 1 500 som ingår i Charlie Norman- samlingen. Ansvarig för arkiv och registrering är Björn Bärnheim som ni kan träffa nästan varje öppen dag under sommaren. Han är jazzkännaren vars kunnande vi inte skulle kunna vara utan. En del har hört rykten om att museet går över i andra händer och det stämmer om vi kan finna lämpliga övertagare med intresse att driva verksamheten i enlighet med stiftelsens stadgar. Känner du någon eller några som kan vara lämpliga är vi tacksamma att få veta detta. Manegen är krattad. Tills vidare fortsätter förstås undertecknad att med största entu- siasm driva verksamheten tillsammans med alla ideella krafter och säsongsanställda. Good afternoon, Bill, accompanied by his wife, Nancy. This interview is conducted by Anthony Brown with Ken Kimery. Bill, if we could start with you stating your full name, your birth date, and where you were born. Holman: My full name is Willis Leonard Holman. I was born in Olive, California, May 21st, 1927. Brown: Where exactly is Olive, California? Holman: Strange you should ask [laughs]. Now it‟s a part of Orange, California. You may not know where Orange is either. Orange is near Santa Ana, which is the county seat of Orange County, California. I don‟t know if Olive was a part of Orange at the time, or whether Orange has just grown up around it, or what. But it‟s located in the city of Orange, although I think it‟s a separate municipality. Anyway, it was a really small town. I always say there was a couple of orange-packing houses and a railroad spur. Probably more than that, but not a whole lot. -

Rune Gustafssons arkiv Svenskt visarkiv April 2013 Leif Larsson INLEDNING Rune Gustafsson ( 1933 – 2012 ) hörde sedan början av 1950-talet till en av Sveriges allra främsta jazzmusiker. Han började sin karriär hos trumslagaren Nils-Bertil Dahlander i Göteborg men flyttade några år senare till Stockholm. Under nästan hela fortsatta 1950-talet spelade han där tillsammans med Putte Wickman. Rune träffade 1959 Arne Domnérus som han sedan samarbetade med i många olika sammanhang. Under ett par årtionden var Rune Gustafsson en av våra mest anlitade studiomusiker som genom sin mångsidighet och flexibilitet passade in i de flesta situationer. Rune Gustafsson har bakom sig en rad egna skivor, bl. a. ”Move” som belönades med Orkesterjournalens Gyllene Skiva. Han har även varit involverad i flera andra produktioner som tilldelats denna utmärkelse. Under åren har RG samarbetat med en rad av jazzens internationella storheter, såsom Benny Carter, George Russel, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz och Zoot Sims. Med den sistnämnde gjorde Rune två skivor, den sista ”In A Sentimental Mood” kom att bli Zoot Sims allra sista. Med sin mångsidighet har Rune också varit efterfrågad i många andra musikaliska sammanhang, både i Sverige och stora delar av världen, t.ex. Eng- land, USA, Sydamerika, Ryssland, Japan och Kina. 1997 erhöll Rune det allra första priset ur Albin Hagströms minnesfond i Kungliga musikaliska akademien med motiveringen: ”För en mer än fyrtiofemårig gärning som framstående jazzsolist och mångsidig studio musiker – en beundrad förebild och outtömlig inspirationskälla för generationer svenska elgitarrister. 1998 fick Rune Gustafsson Thore Ehrlings stipendium med motiveringen: ”En av de mångsidigaste musikerna inom svensk populärmusik och vår genom tiderna främste jazzgitarrist”. -

Farmer: The date of birth is August 21, 1928, and I was born in a town called Council Bluffs, Iowa. Brown: What is that near? Farmer: It across the Mississippi River from Omaha. It’s like a suburb of Omaha. Brown: Do you know the circumstances that brought your family there? Farmer: No idea. In fact, when my brother and I were four years old, we moved Arizona.
