  • NEW ALBUM RELEASE - SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop
NEW ALBUM RELEASE - SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop In 2019 RÊVE BOHÈME released their sixth album on the Norwegian Gypsy Jazz label Hot Club Records. As the album title refers to, RÊVE BOHÈME has picked SIX lesser-known swing compositions from their hero DJANGO REINHARDT and matched them with SIX bebop standards that Django loved to play! All the songs on the album have the characteristic acoustic sound of RÊVE BOHÈME and with their modern and dynamic interpretation of these classic songs RÊVE BOHÈME makes an exiting contribution to the contemporary Gypsy Jazz-scene today. SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop was recorded in one studio session with RÊVE BOHÈME having fun and playing live, choosing mostly “first takes” of the recorded material – so this album is a must for all Django-enthusiasts and Gypsy Jazz lovers! Line-up: Jens Fuglsang (lead guitar), Finn Poulsen (harmonica) Robert Pilgaard (rhythm guitar), Jesper Riis (double bass) The band / The story - www.reve.dk Rêve Bohème is from Denmark but played their first concert at the gypsy jazz restaurant Bistro d'Eustache in Paris, 1998. Since then they have been touring and playing clubs and festivals in Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, England, Germany, Holland, Greece and Poland. The band have played and performed with international gypsy jazz artists such as Dorado Schmidt, Robin Nolan, Andreas Öberg, Jon Larsen & HCN, Gustav Lundgren, Basily, Paulus Schäfer, Angelo Debarre, Gary Potter, Biel Ballester, Mozes Rosenberg - and many others. Over the years Rêve Bohème have recorded in different line-ups and musical settings. Their fusion between the Nordic and South- European traditions have always created a unique musical universe which can be heard on their five previous albums: Django goes North 2012 (Calibrated), Café Django 2009 (Calibrated), Best of Rêve Bohème 2007 (Hot Club Records), Django’s Dream 2005 (Calibrated) and Django Jalousie 2002 (Cope).

Mountain Sound: Norway’s Jazz Identity By © 2019 Ashley Hirt M.A., University of Idaho, 2011 B.A., Pittsburg State University, 2009 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Musicology and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Musicology. __________________________ Chair: Dr. Roberta Freund Schwartz __________________________ Dr. Bryan Haaheim __________________________ Dr. Paul Laird __________________________ Dr. Sherrie Tucker __________________________ Dr. Ketty Wong-Cruz The dissertation committee for Ashley Hirt certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: _____________________________ Chair: Date approved: ii Abstract Jazz musicians in Norway have cultivated a distinctive sound, driven by timbral markers and visual album aesthetics that are associated with the cold mountain valleys and fjords of their home country. This jazz dialect was developed in the decade following the Nazi occupation of Norway, when Norwegians utilized jazz as a subtle tool of resistance to Nazi cultural policies. This dialect was further enriched through the Scandinavian residencies of African American free jazz pioneers Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and George Russell, who tutored Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Garbarek is credited with codifying the “Nordic sound” in the 1960s and ‘70s through his improvisations on numerous albums released on the ECM label. Throughout this document I will define, describe, and contextualize this sound concept. Today, the Nordic sound is embraced by Norwegian musicians and cultural institutions alike, and has come to form a significant component of modern Norwegian artistic identity. This document explores these dynamics and how they all contribute to a Norwegian jazz scene that continues to grow and flourish, expressing this jazz identity in a world marked by increasing globalization.

  • Florin Niculescuniculescu

  • Keeping the Gypsy Fire Burning by Michael Dregni
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moreno: Keeping the Gypsy Fire Burning By Michael Dregni -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paris. Autumn leaves cover the quays along the banks of the River Seine. Under the Paris skies, the fall wind sweeps through the city. In a café on the Place de Tertre on Montmartre, Gypsy guitarist Tchouta Adel, son of old-time Matelo Ferret cohort Spatzo Adel, is playing duets with Jeannot. In a Russian cabaret across town, Matelo's sons, Boulou and Elios Ferré, unfurl their sophisticated amalgamation of Gypsy music and bebop. Rodolphe Raffalli, Sami Dausset, Serge Krief, and Angelo Debarre are all displaying their craft. To the north of the city at La Chope des Puces, a café in the infamous flea market, Ninine and Mondine play traditional gitane music, while Patrick Saussois and his Alma Sinti band stir up the dancing crowd at a favored guinguette, a quayside patio dancehall along the old river. Some seventy years after Django and his Quintette du Hot Club de France first melded musette and Gypsy music with swing, jazz manouche is alive and well in the city of its birth, Paris. We are waiting for the music to begin at Le Bistro d’Eustache near Les Halles at 37, Rue Berger. Well-known Selmer guitar expert François Charle and I keep an anxious eye out for the arrival of Gypsy guitarist Moreno. Le Bistro d’Eustache is one of the best cafés for jazz manouche, recommended to me by Hot Cub de Norvège guitarist Jon Larsen. The walls are plastered with ancient posters announcing the annual Django festival at Samois-sur-Seine, providing a remembrance of things past.

  • Developing Multilingual and Multicultural Competence in the Context of Learning Norwegian at Bachelor Level
Multilinguism and multiculturalism Developing Multilingual and Multicultural Competence in the Context of Learning Norwegian at Bachelor Level Raluca POP1 Raluca-Daniela RADUȚ2 Abstract The field of foreign language learning has gradually acknowledged the intertwined relationship between language and culture. This, in turn, led to the development of new goals as concerns the learning of a foreign language. This paper presented various theoretical aspects related to the need of addressing cognitive, affective and behavioural aspects when interacting in a diverse sociocultural context while using a foreign language as a means of communication. The paper also intended to provide practical aspects related to good practices that have been used in the Norwegian BA programme. Thus, students were encouraged to acquire various skills in order to become proficient communicators in different communicative instances and in diverse multicultural contexts. Keywords: multilingual, multicultural, intercultural communicative competence, foreign language learning, poetry, Jan Erik Vold. Introduction his paper consists of two major sections. The first section focuses on presenting various theoretical aspects related to the need of addressing cognitive, affective and behavioural aspects when interacting in a Tdiverse sociocultural context while using a foreign language as a means of communication. The second section provides practical aspects related to good practices that have been used in the Norwegian BA programme. A key idea that can be identified throughout the paper refers to teaching language and culture in an integrated manner. This perspective permeates all the elements that relate to the field of foreign language teaching 1 Raluca Pop, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, [email protected] 2 Raluca-Daniela Răduţ, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, [email protected] Dialogos Vol.

  • “Django's Tiger”: from Jazz to Jazz Manouche
“Django’s Tiger”: From Jazz to Jazz Manouche Benjamin Givan Not long ago, I saw an online amateur video of the French guitarists Adrien Moignard (b. 1985) and Sébastien Giniaux (b. 1981), who are two of the leading players of the genre known as “jazz manouche” (or “gypsy jazz”) (Moignard and Giniaux 2010). They had been filmed in 2010 at the French village of Samois–sur–Seine during its annual Festival Django Reinhardt. Seated outdoors at sunset, closely encircled by throngs of festival–goers, the two musicians were performing a composition called “Django’s Tiger” by the festival’s dedicatee, the guitarist Django Reinhardt (1910–53). Midway through a breakneck virtuosic solo, Moignard insistently reiterated several high B–naturals, halfway down his guitar’s neck, before launching decisively into a four–bar phrase, high up the fretboard. A more tentative, indistinct arpeggiation followed. And then, for a fleeting instant, he stopped playing, his left hand slack against the instrument. After scrambling through an- other rapid arpeggiation, his left fingers only grazing the strings, Moignard fully reconnected physically with his guitar and confidently concluded the chorus. I laughed. It seemed to me that this was not merely the sort of everyday stumble that adventuresome, risk–taking improvisers inevitably make from time to time. Moignard was paraphrasing a melodic passage that Reinhardt had improvised on a recording years ago, but it did not work out as deftly as it had for Django. Its harmonic context was different, for reasons that were far from trivial. In fact, it occurred to me that this near–imperceptible musical disruption encapsulated an epistemological contradiction within an entire musical genre inspired by a single musician.
