Resumo Esta dissertação busca caracterizar e analisar os aplicativos de análise de informações sociais quanto a sua utilização em processos interacionais online. Considerando a importância da comunicação através de ambientes digitais como os sites de redes sociais, buscamos observar novas práticas de auto-apresentação e de monitoramento. Partindo da perspectiva interacionista, a dissertação elenca o gerenciamento de impressões e a construção identitária como conceitos-chave para a compreensão da comunicação digital. Os aplicativos sociais são softwares que extraem, processam e classificam os dados publicados em sites de redes sociais com fins interacionais. A pesquisa está interessada em compreender como tais aplicativos podem exercer papéis nas dinâmicas interacionais online e utilizou como metodologia o mapeamento e classificação dos aplicativos quanto a variáveis relacionadas a suas Práticas Prescritas, Manejo dos Dados, Visualização, Motivação e Compartilhamento. Pode-se constatar a importância de aspectos destes aplicativos que podem condicionar as práticas de busca por informação social e auto-monitoramento, com consequências para os processos de vigilância, memória, gerenciamento de impressões e construção identitária. Palavras-chave: sites de redes sociais, busca por informação social, gerenciamento de impressões, aplicativos sociais 2 Abstract This dissertation aims to describe and analyze the applications of social information analysis and its use in online interactional processes. Considering the importance of communication through digital environments such as social network sites, we seek to observe new practices of self-presentation and self-monitoring. From the interactionist perspective, the dissertation specifies impression management and identity construction as key concepts for the understanding of digital communication. The social applications are softwares that extract, process and sort the data published on social networking sites with interactional purposes. The research is interested in understanding how such applications can play roles in the interactional online dynamics and used as method the mapping and classification of the applications in variables related to their Prescribed Practices, Data Management, Visualization, Motivation and Sharing. The importante of aspects of these applications in influencing the practices of social information seeking and self-monitoring, with consequences for the processes of surveillance, memory, impression management and identity construction could be observed. Zur sozio-technischen Geschichte der Plattformaktivitäten Fav, Retweet und Like Abstract: In this article, we explore the relation between platform activities and their usage practices. Taking departure from predefined activities offered by social media platforms, this paper inquires into what may happen if platform features cater to opposing user practices. The paper investigates whether the data they produce can be considered as ‘bad’ platform data, just as Harold Garfinkel conceptualized ‘bad’ clinical records, and does so by engaging with the socio-technical history of Facebook’s Like and Twitter’s retweet and favourite button and their associated cultures of usage. In a first step, we question popular bottom-up narratives that presenti platform features as appropriations of emergent user practices, such as in the case of the retweet button. In a second step, we draw on ethnographic research on the German Favstar sphere – a group of popular Twitter amateurs with specific cooperation practices – to trace the divergent and at points even contradictory user practices in the case of the favourite button. In both cases, the politics of data visibility are of central importance, and a third group of actors appears besides the platform and its users, which recombines existing platform data into new contexts according to specific practices of usage for features. Such ‘satellite platforms’, we argue, can provide ‘good’ platform- political reasons for platform activities to produce ‘bad’ data. Responsive policy KEY WORDS new media, old media, responsiveness, power of communication ABSTRACT The goal of this article is to analyze the microblog service Twitter from the perspective of its significance in the political communication. In the recent years it has become one of the most popular media services in the world, next to Facebook, YouTube and Google. Thanks to its popularity, politicians have a chance to avoid traditional media gatekeeping and to directly reach followers with the most important information. Twitter is an important structural element of the new “new media”1. It plays an increasingly important role in political communicating. It is also a vital component of the media system shaped by the evolution of the Internet and mobile telephony, as well as computer technology. The content published in the new “new media” is a result of presumption, arising from the cooperation of multiple authors participating in its creation. The best example here is the YouTube website, which is the largest video library in the world, containing files created by rank-and-file users. In this context, the primary interpretation of a media system must take the virtual space into account. In a system construed this way, Twitter plays a significant role as a tool of communication for political actors who use it to provide first-hand news, mostly journalists and other politicians. It should be added that thanks to the technological progress it is now possible to publish pictures and films on the website as well. This functionality is provided by applications known as Twitpic2 and Twitcam3.
