REMEMBRANCE

Editorial. It seems to me that the flora & fauna wait until the clocks go back before they decide to display their rich colours of the season. The lanes and woods are amazing this year with their golds, yellows and pale green leaves carpeting the ground. Back from our travels it’s time to prepare for the Yule tide and as usual we shall be producing our colour Charity Christmas edition of the News. Details of how to take part are on page 16. Let’s see if we can’t do better this year and break the £200 barrier. Becky Shute has reported on the success of the Friends of Warbstow School Duck race and advance notice of their forthcoming events are on page 7. Gill’s poetry piece this time round is on some of her favourite poets’ seasonal poems and can be found on page 26. The 1st Brownies are looking for more members and a report into their Guiding activities is on page 29. Also travelling sur le continent was the Warbstow & Eden Youth Club. A report with pictures is on page 33. Thelma has been on holiday but still found time to record her diary on page 41. Lastly if you have any fund raising ideas that you feel could help raise money for the PAD why not let us know. We’d be only too willing to make it happen. We are now only £600 short of our target to get the PAD installed so any ideas are welcome. This year the remembrance service will be held at 12.15pm. It just leaves me to wish all our readers and regular contributors a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. GJB

Duck Race Early in September our annual duck race took place in Canworthy Water. This was very well supported and the pasties and cakes seemed to be well received. FOWS challenged our supporters to help raise £500 and with their help, we beat our target which is absolutely amazing and this is being match funded by Barclays Bank for which we are very grateful. Congratulations to our winners – Rosemary Risdon, Stuart Bowden and Alex Richardson.

Willow Workshops Katie Webb is kindly running two willow workshops on Friday 27th November at Canworthy Water Sunday School. The morning session will run from 9am until 11.30am focusing on wreath making and the afternoon session will run from 12.30pm until 3pm when you will have the opportunity to make your own willow Christmas decorations. £15 per person per session. Booking is essential so please phone Warbstow School on 781388 if you would like to join us. There is limited space available.

WWARBSTOWARBSTOW PPARISHARISH CCOUNCILOUNCIL

The next meeting of the Warbstow Parish Council is to be held on

Tuesday 24 November at 7.30 pm at Canworthy Water Sunday School.

War Memorial The War Memorial has been in need of repair for some time and at last I am pleased to report that with our increased Parish Precept we now have the funds to be able to go ahead with the essential maintenance required. Chris Webster has started the work and it will hopefully be completed by

Remembrance Day.

Hedge Trimming Downinney Common has been in need of tidying up for some time; we are hoping that this will have been completed by the time the Warbstow and District Newsletter is published. To make best use of the contractor’s time and reduce the cost to the parish we have made arrangements with the school and some residents for their hedges to be trimmed at the same time and the cost shared. On the note of maintaining roadside hedges we have had reports that there are a number of roadside hedges on private property that need to be cut for road safety reasons. I would like to remind everyone with roadside hedges that trees and hedges are the responsibility of the owner of the land they are situated on. The owner has a legal obligation to keep them from encroaching on the highway. If receives a complaint regarding a hedge that is encroaching the road it may serve a hedge cutting notice which states that the trees or hedges need to be cut back within 28 days. If the landowner fails to do this, the notice may be enforceable in court. If the problem is thought to be serious it may have the work carried out and then bill the landowner.

Warbstow School Playground Equipment Warbstow Primary School is continually looking to improve the facilities provided for the children. I am pleased to be able to report that the Parish Council has agreed to make a donation of £200 towards the purchase of additional equipment for the playground. Cont….

Page 11

Cont... School Traffic The lack of Car Parking space outside the school continues to be a cause for concern, especially now that the number of pupils attending the school has increased. It would be great if we could persuade the Council to invest in expanding the car parking facilities at the community centre. Unfortunately in the current economic climate this is unlikely to happen until somebody is seriously injured. In the meantime I would call upon all road users and pedestrians to show care and consideration during the school drop off and pick up times. As usual any thoughts you have on these or other issues will be appreciated and can be emailed to me at [email protected].

PPOETSOETS ANDAND PPOETRYOETRY by Gill Brown

To finish the year I have chosen three poems that personify autumn, winter and

Christmas by three of my favourite authors.

The first, written in 1783, is by William Blake who describes autumn as "jolly," celebrating the spring and summer with a song before the coming of "bleak" winter. When autumn leaves behind the "golden load" it can be seen as a sign of better times ahead in the following year.

To Autumn

O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stained With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit Beneath my shady roof; there thou mayst rest, And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe, And all the daughters of the year shall dance! Sing now the lusty song of fruits and flowers. "The narrow bud opens her beauties to The sun, and love runs in her thrilling veins; Blossoms hang round the brows of Morning, and Flourish down the bright cheek of modest Eve, Till clust'ring Summer breaks forth into singing, And feather'd clouds strew flowers round her head. "The spirits of the air live on the smells Of fruit; and Joy, with pinions light, roves round The gardens, or sits singing in the trees." Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat; Then rose, girded himself, and o'er the bleak Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.

The second poem, written in 1922 is by the American poet Robert Frost. During a harsh winter in New Hampshire Frost was returning home after an unsuccessful trip to a market when he realised that he did not have enough money to buy Christmas presents for his children. Frost stopped his horse at a bend in the road in order to cry but after a few minutes, the horse Cont….

Page 15

…..shook the bells on its harness, and Frost was cheered enough by the sound of the horse’s impatience to continue home. Although we do not know what the “promises” are that he has to keep, there is a feeling that the narrator of the poem enjoys the com- plete isolation of the snowy woods before returning to his family.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound’s the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

The third poem, written in 1915 by Thomas Hardy, is The Oxen. Hardy was born in rural Dorset where he spent his childhood and the poem refers to a superstition about Christmas that he recalled from that time. To me it is a poem full of hope and a longing for the innocence of childhood.

The Oxen

Christmas Eve, and twelve of the clock. “Now they are all on their knees,” An elder said as we sat in a flock By the embers in hearthside ease. Cont…..

Page 16

Cont….. We pictured the meek mild creatures where They dwelt in their strawy pen, Nor did it occur to one of us there

To doubt they were kneeling then.

So fair a fancy few would weave In these years! Yet, I feel, If someone said on Christmas Eve,

“Come; see the oxen kneel,

“In the lonely barton by yonder coomb Our childhood used to know,” I should go with him in the gloom,

Hoping it might be so.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Gill Brown

The guides have been really busy since starting back after the summer hol- idays. We started the term by re-organising the patrols that the girls work in; patrols are groups of 4-6 girls who work together during the meetings led by a patrol leader and seconder who are voted for by the girls in the patrol. Each patrol has been working on a “Go for it”! Go for it is a programme that the groups follow for 4 weeks, planning and completing the activities inde- pendently in their patrols. We have the caterpillar patrol working on go for it glamourama, penguin patrol completing go for it parties and dolphin patrol working on go for it show time.

We are delighted that we have recently been able to reopen our Rainbow unit, so if you have a daughter aged 5-7 years who is interested in joining please get in contact with either Mary on 01840 230006 or Helena on

Members of Warb- stow, Eden and district youth club have had a very successful few days enjoying the sights and sounds of our Capital city, Lon- don, including mu- seums, the Tower of London, river, bus and underground trips, Houses of Parliament, The Bomber Command memorial, where Sarah was able to lay crosses in remembrance of her family member, who lost his life. We have also enjoyed our time at the theatre watching War Horse, a very moving story with amazing puppetry, experiencing Harrods, Selfridges, Hamleys toy shop and M & M world. Whilst walking around the Museum of London everyone was impressed with the London Cauldron, flame of the 2012 Olympic Games. This is certainly a place to visit if you ever have the chance. Eating has always been a highlight of any youth club outing and we weren’t disappointed this time. The pizza hut experience will be remembered for a long time to come by us and the staff at Leicester square! We even managed to follow in our tradition of a final meal from McDonalds which we ate on the train home. We are truly grateful to all our supporters who have enabled us to fund a very busy, fun and educational trip. We have enjoyed the hospitality of the team at Wesley Chapel, especially Jennifer, who enabled us to do so much more by offering us a place to stay. On Sunday members of Eden Chapel were welcomed as we joined in a communion service which felt very special as it was conducted in John Wesley’s foundry chapel. Before we left to travel home we had the opportunity to explore the museum, Wesley’s house and the foundry toilets made of beautiful porcelain. A highlight for some especially as they are still used by gentlemen! Sending the boys in first seemed very appropriate at this point. We have concluded that Youth Club must go on. Joining together as a group to visit places of interest, especially London, is top of our list of future events. As Youth Club leader, to witness young people grow in confidence, and learn about things that really matter whilst having fun has been truly satisfying and encouraging to keep going. In the words of some of our young people this trip has been ‘ all good’ and ‘sweeeeeeet’ Thank you. For details about the Youth Club contact Alison Hoather on 781418

September Sunday 20th Bude Food Festival. Lots of quality local produce, meats,

cheeses, beers, chutneys, and lots more.

Monday 21st Canworthy Water harvest festival. Always a nice service, followed by a sit down meal. Must remember it's 7.pm, and not

7.30pm next year!

Saturday 26th The Rebel to watch Miss You Already. A weepy, but

nevertheless a good film.

Sunday 27th Warbstow Community fund raising event for PAD FUND.

Glorious weather, but would like to have seen more people.

Monday, 28th PAD fund. Partylite party. Many thanks to Clare, John and Sylvie Waters' grandaughter. Clare, who travelled down from Okehampton, and presented a party, showing us her lovely candles. Her visit was motivated by a very sad happening, earlier this year, when her mother, John and Sylvie's daughter, Janet, passed away very suddenly, aged 53 years. Having family here in our community, she thought it essential we have a

PAD. Thank you Clare! A very kind thing to do. £43 was raised.

October

Sunday4th Bethel Chapel harvest festival. Really doesn't seem like a year .

These festivals seem to come around so quickly.

Sunday 25th Warbstow Church harvest festival. Good weather for the 3pm service, taken by Rev. Tony. Usual good humoured auction, and as always, plenty of food.
