2 Welcome to this summer edition of our parish magazine. As a reminder the parish covers five rural villages, Stoke upon Tern, Stoke Heath, , Eaton-upon-Tern and Ollerton. Wistanswick Fete 2015

This year’s Wistanswick Fete is being held on Saturday July 18th, with the main event starting from 1pm. It will, as ever, be a great day out for all the family.

The Horse Show will start at 9.30am running all day, with both jumping and showing classes, details from Jackie Jefferies on 07554 948168. As always there will be bacon sandwiches on hand!

For dog lovers there is a Companion Dog Show with many classes, this will be from 1 o’clock, with entries being taken from 11.45am Details from Trudy Longhurst on 01952 550014.

In the marquee there will be Cooks and Gardeners competitions and many other stalls, details from Liv Wilcox on 07880 738456 (tables and pitches from £10 in advance).

There will be a vintage machinery demonstration from Tern Valley, plus activities run by the Maurice Chandler Sports Centre.

There is the fantastic prize raffle, along with the chance to win on other stalls, games and sideshows, together with donkey rides and a giant inflatable slide - to work off the ice cream.....

Refreshments will be available with both a barbecue and teas and cakes available throughout the afternoon in the Institute.

We are always looking for new ways to make the fete bigger and better - if you have any ideas for stalls, sideshows and activities or if you would like to enter the Garden & Produce or Dog show please either let us know or get involved on the day.

Women’s Institute

The local WI meet at the Wistanswick Institute on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.30.pm.

We offer the opportunity to learn, develop and pass on new skills, to belong to something special, make new friends, work as a team and have fun.

For further details call Eleanor on 01630 638701, Liz 01630 638520, This month's Recipe - Alison's Coffee and Chocolate Torte Serves 6 to 8

Ingredients - 75g/3oz butter 75g/3oz caster sugar 40g/11/2oz cocoa 1 egg yolk 15ml/1tbsp sherry 50g/2oz chopped hazelnuts 32 sponge finger biscuits 200ml/1/3pt black coffee 150ml/1/4pt whipping cream

Method - Line a 20cm/8"round tin with foil. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy then stir in the cocoa, egg yolk, sherry and nuts. Mix well together adding a little extra sherry if necessary to make a spreading consistency. Dip the sponge fingers, sugar side down, quickly in the coffee. Arrange a layer in the bottom of the tin coffee side down and cover them with half of the chocolate filling. Put another layer of coffee-dipped biscuits on top, spread the remaining filling on next, and then cover with the rest of the biscuits, coffee side uppermost. To Freeze - Cover with foil, seal, label and freeze To Serve - (thaw completely if frozen) Cover with 150ml/1/4pt whipped cream and decorate all over with small meringues and chocolate curls.

The Tern-Stylers Craft Group

Come and join the Tern-Stylers, a group for craft enthusiasts, whatever your speciality, be it knitting, marquetry, cross stitch, matchstick, models, quilting....

Dig out that project hidden at the back of your cupboard and join us for the inspiration to complete it. Have some “me” time and meet like minded people for friendship and to share ideas and information.

We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday, 10am - 12 noon at The Institute, Chapel Bank,Wistanswick. Refreshments are provided (tea or coffee and cake) and the cost is £2.00 pp.

The Parish Hall is self funded and all proceeds from the Bingo go back into the running and the up-keep of the hall.

Maurice Chandler Sports Centre

The Maurice Chandler Sports Centre on Warrant Road, Stoke Heath is a registered charity and is run by a volunteer committee.

Most sporting activities are catered for including - badminton, 5-a-side football, roller skating and a cardiovascular gym.

3 8 Walking Group

The Walking Group meets on the third Sunday of the month at 11am at the Red Lion pub (& often returns there for refreshment!); our next walk will be on 21st June

The footpaths to the west and south of the village can form part of a circular walk which takes you over the border into & Wrekin and back again.

Cemetery Extension - Stoke upon Tern

The fencing and planting of the hedge has been completed along the boundary with the remaining field together with its new entrance and gates.

The treatment at the road frontage will be decided in the near future by the newly formed cemetery committee of Councillors.

A NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN FOR STOKE UPON TERN

The Parish Council is developing a Neighbourhood Plan for Stoke upon Tern so that the local community can have more say over the way the parish develops in the coming years. The Plan will be part of the statutory development plan for the parish and will have to be taken into account by Council when decisions are made on planning applications.

We will be holding a range of workshops where all people and parties within the Parish can come along and contribute. Please try to attend the relevant workshops – it is your plan and it must include the feedback we get from residents & other stakeholders.

There will be workshops covering the needs of Eaton on Tern, Ollerton, Stoke upon Tern, Stoke Heath, Tern Hill and Wistanswick, plus Roads and infrastructure, Local businesses and farmers, Amenities and Traveller sites, Army, Air force & Prison liaison.

3 12 EATON UPON TERN DEFIBRILLATOR

As reported in our last edition, Eaton Upon Tern now have a vital piece of life saving equipment, which could restart the heart of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. Residents would like to encourage other villages in the parish to consider buying a defibrillator for their area. If you would like advice on how to proceed contact: Janet Furness by email at [email protected]

Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) work with local people and partners to identify, tackle and solve issues that matter to the Horse Watch! community where you live. To tackle the rise in horse and tack Making neighbourhoods safer by cutting thefts, the SNT are day to day crime and anti-social behaviour actively promoting is at the heart of keeping people in West Horse Watch which Mercia safe. Roll of Honour – Eton on Tern 1914-1919

The church pictured was built by the Heatley family in memory of John Heatley who died in 1927.

It was dedicated in 1928/29

and was used by RAF Peplow (Eaton upon Tern airfield) in the war years.

It was unfortunately demolished in the early 1970’s.

This picture was originally displayed in the Church of the Good Shepherd, on the Ollerton to Eaton road.

Note the spelling of Eaton.
