The 20 learning activities represent suggested approaches for teaching Units 11 and 12 of the New York State Grades 7 and 8 syllabus. Each unit is comprehensive, divided into topical learning activities. Focus questions, teacher background materials, major ideas, concepts, performance objectives, development strategies and worksheets are included. Follow-up activities provide extension suggestions for individual students or classes. Worksheets contain primary sources such as photographs, speeches, letters, and diaries of a particular era. Unit 11, "The Changing Nature of the American People from World War II to the Present," contains 14 learning activities. Unit 12, "Citizenship in Today's World," provides 6 activities. People from virtually every cultural, linguistic, and ethnic group in the world now come to live and work in our citytransforming it into a trulymulticultural community. This trend both reflects and anticipates the worldwide movement toward a global society. As today's students move toward adulthood in the twenty-first century, they need to be aware of their own cultural identities, while understanding and appreciatingthe cultures of others. To help meet this challenge in the New York City public schools, we have begun to develop multicultural curricula in all subject areas. Grade 8 United States and New York State History: A Multicultural Perspective gives students the opportunity to interpret key historical events and trends from the perspectives of a variety of cultural, linguistic, and ethnic groups. This approach enables students to appreciate the contributions of all of our nation's peoples to history, and to acquire a body of knowledge that reflects the experiences and values representative of the many cultures that have helped construct our nation and our state. Through their active participation, students will come to understand that knowledge is itself dynamic, ever- changing, and open to debate. Active and critical engagement with history preserves and enriches our democratic ideals. Downloaded from AD WATCH Fuel pump promos: continued Jennifer Mindell spotted a new venue for ciga- rette advertising in the UK in 1997—fuel pump handles at petrol (gas) stations.1 In April of this year, I came across the same marketing technique in Somerset, Pennsylvania, USA, at a Turkey Hill Minit Market, where this convenience store and an Exxon gas station are operated jointly. On the day I visited the Minit Market, all of the cigarette ads appearing on the fuel pump handles promoted a special sale of Camel, Winston, and Salem cigarettes (RJ Reynolds) for $25.48 a carton (fig 1). Similar ads appeared inside the store on a self service ciga- rette display rack. Some of the fuel pump han- dles advertised food or beverage products. The aims of our study were: (i) to contribute to the evaluation of the impact of standardised tobacco packaging in NZ by repeating a previous published study on smoking and tobacco packaging display at outdoor areas of Wellington hospitality venues; (ii) contextualising this intervention for Māori health and reducing health inequalities; (iii) assessing the prevalence of vaping at these same venues and (iv) assessing the prevalence of smoking and vaping while walking at selected locations. Methods The methods followed a very similar study conducted in 2014 for largely the same venues. The field work for this study was conducted from 16 May to 27 May 2018. Observations of smokers, vapers and tobacco packs were made at 56 hospitality venues in central Wellington, along three main boulevards; Cuba Street, Courtenay Place and the Waterfront. Observation data were systematically collected and recorded on a standardised form. Results A total of 8191 patrons, 1113 active smokers, 114 active vapers and 889 visible packs were observed during 2422 venue observations.

On the day I visited the Minit Market, all of the cigarette ads appearing on the fuel pump handles promoted a special sale of Camel, Winston, and Salem cigarettes (RJ Reynolds) for $25.48 a carton (fig 1). Similar ads appeared inside the store on a self service ciga- rette display rack. Some of the fuel pump han- dles advertised food or beverage products.
