We present for the frst time a model that identifes conditions responsible for the constrained fow of vitamin B1 from unicellular organisms to planktivorous fshes. The fow of vitamin B1 through the food web is constrained under anthropogenic pressures of increased nutrient input and, driven by climatic change, increased light attenuation by dissolved substances transported to marine coastal systems. Fishing pressure on piscivorous fsh, through increased abundance of planktivorous fsh that overexploit mesozooplankton, may further constrain vitamin B1 fow from producers to consumers. We also found that key ecological contributors to the constrained fow of vitamin B1 are a low mesozooplankton biomass, picoalgae prevailing among primary producers and low fuctuations of population numbers of planktonic organisms. Vitamin B1 (thiamin) is necessary for the proper functioning of the majority of organisms because it serves as a cofactor that associates with a number of enzymes involved in primary carbohydrate and amino acid metabo- 1 2 lism . Vitamin B1 defciency compromises mitochondrial functioning and causes nerve signaling malfunction 3 in animals . On a systemic level, low vitamin B1 levels translate into impaired health, immunosuppression and 4 reproductive failures . -

Our project goal was to implement several construction techniques to reduce the dominance of Phragmites and then examine the ecological responses of the system (as a whole as well as each experimental treatment) to inform future restoration actions at Meadow Pond. The construction treatments were: creeks, creeks and pools, sediment excavation with a large pool including native marsh plantings. Creek construction increased tides at all treatments so that more tides flooded the marsh and the highest spring tides increased to 30 cm. Soil salinity increased at all treatment areas following restoration, but also increased at control areas, so greater soil salinity could not be attributed to the treatments. Decreases in Phragmites cover were not statistically significant, but treatment areas did show significant increases in native vegetation following restoration. Fish habitat was also increased by creek and pool construction and excavation, so that pool fish density increased from 1 to 40 m-2. -

Myxobacteria have been regarded as “microbe factories” for active secondary metabolites, and therefore, this study was performed to isolate two bacteriolytic genera of myxobacteria, Myxococcus sp. and Corallococcus sp., from 10 soil/sand samples using two conventional methods followed by purification with the aim of determining the antimicrobial activity of methanol extracts against 11 test microorganisms (four Gram-positive, four Gram-negative, two yeasts and one fungus). Out of thirty-nine directly observed strains, 23 were purified and analyzed for antimicrobial activities. Based on the broth microdilution method, a total of 19 crude extracts showed antimicrobial activity. The range of inhibited wells was more important in the case of anti-Gram-positive-bacterial activity in comparison with the anti-Gram-negative-bacterial and antifungal activity. In light of the established degree and range of antimicrobial activity, two of the most active isolates (BNEM1 and SFEC2) were selected for further characterization. Morphological parameters and a sequence similarity search by BLAST revealed that they showed 99% sequence similarity to Myxococcus xanthus − BNEM1 (accession no. -

This study features the endophagous insect community in reproductive aroid structures of a tropical rainforest of Mexico, and the shifting that occurs along an altitudinal gradient and among different hosts. In three sites of the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, we surveyed eight aroid species over a yearly cycle. The insects found were reared in the laboratory, quantified and identified. Data were analyzed through species interaction networks. We recorded 34 endophagous species from 21 families belonging to four insect orders. The community was highly specialized at both network and species levels. Along the altitudinal gradient, there was a reduction in richness and a high turnover of species, while the assemblage among hosts was also highly specific, with different dominant species. -

Such discoveries include chemosynthetic activities in deep-ocean ecosystems, survival processes in oligotrophic waters, and the role of microorganisms in food webs coupled with symbiotic relationships and energy flow. Many discoveries can be attributed to innovative methodologies, including radioisotopes, immunofluores- cent-epifluorescent analysis, and flow cytometry. The latter has shown the key role of marine viruses in marine system energetics. Studies of the components of the “microbial loop” have shown the significance of various phagotrophic processes involved in grazing by microinvertebrates. Microbial activities and dissolved organic carbon are closely coupled with the dynamics of fluctuating water masses. New biotechnological approaches and the use of molecular biology techniques still provide new and relevant information on the role of microorganisms in oceanic and estuarine environments. International interdisciplinary studies have explored ecological aspects of marine microorganisms and their significance in biocomplexity.
