WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO TITUS AND HIS FAMILY? A breakdown of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus

■ A Roman General named Titus Andronicus returns home after defeating the Goths with Queen of the Goths, Tamora, her three sons, and Aaron the Moore as his prisoners. ■ As with Rome’s bloody customs the people demand a blood sacrifice and Titus chooses Tamora’s oldest son to be killed. He sacrifices her son. ■ Since the Emperor died before the play starts the people of Rome select Titus to be their new Emperor but Titus doesn’t want the power so he declares that Saturninus should be the Emperor as he is the Emperor’s eldest son. ■ Saturninus wants to take Lavinia, Titus’ daughter as his bride but she wants to marry Bassianus who is Saturninus’ younger brother. One of Titus’ sons tries to intervene wanting to help his sister elope and Titus kills him. ■ Saturninus, upset that the Andronicus family (especially Lavinia) has wronged him, chooses Tamora as his bride. ■ Everyone agrees to go hunting the next day. ■ During the hunt, Aaron convinces Tamora’s two sons to stop fighting over who deserves Lavinia’s love and proposes that they rape her. ■ Aaron buries a bag of money under a tree. Tamora finds Aaron and they start making out as they are secretly lovers. Bassianus and Lavinia find them in the act and Tamora’s two sons kill Bassianus. Tamora lets her sons satisfy their lust with her. They take her off to another part of the forest, rape her, cut off her hands, and cut out her tongue. ■ Aaron leads Titus’ remaining two sons to a pit where Bassianus’ body is. One of them falls in the pit and then the tries to help him but falls in too. ■ Aaron brings Saturninus to the pit and produces a letter that implicates Titus’ sons in Bassianus’ murder. Saturninus, in turn, wants to kill Titus’ sons. Credit - goodticklebrain.com

THEATRE NETWORK • 11 WHAT IS BOUFFON? A DISCUS SION WITH MICHAEL KENNARD

Explain it to me like a layman - what is bouffon? Bouffon is a theatrical style of clown/physical comedy. It is based on the medieval times when there were packs/gangs of outcasts that were spat on and stoned in order to remove them from society. They were the lepers, the hunchbacks, the rejected ones of society, which at the time were not considered the beautiful people. They were allowed back into society once a year where they came back with a vengeance with their weapons; charm, intelligence and parody.

Where did the bouffon form originate? It is a relatively new style created by Jacques Lecoq and Philippe Gaulier in Paris, France in the 1960s. They created the style in order to teach students about the grotesque and parody. They based it on the medieval French festival, the Feast of the Ass in which all the outcasts were allowed to come to the churches and perform. As Gaulier said so eloquently, “The bouffons are the lowest of the Michael Kennard is one half of the low, but they come to tell us – Gods beautiful clown duo Mump & Smoot children – that all aspects of humanity belong to everyone.”

What separates bouffon from other types of clown? Clown are the children of god while bouffon are the children of the devil. Audiences tend to laugh at the clown but in bouffon, the bouffon laugh at the audience. Clowns love to be loved A Depiction of the Feast of the Ass by the audience whereas the bouffon never asks for the love of the audience. Probably the biggest difference is the physical appearance of the bouffon as they usually have lumps and bumps and bad teeth. The one place you may not find this difference is in Neo-Bouffon (new-Bouffon) - this style tends to modernize the bouffon, bringing the style into present day where you could say almost any person or occupation could be the target of the neo-bouffon style (ie the president).

12 • TITUS BOUFFONIUS A DISCUS SION WITH MICHAEL KENNARD

What are some of rules of bouffon? A lot of these rules may not mean much to the general public as they are related to theatrical techniques, I will do my best to make clear. Bouffon are the masters of parody, in other words your parody has to be good. Don’t break your physical axis point, this is tied into the physical integrity of the bouffon/ performer. The bouffon is a body mask, safe, hidden and mischievous. You cannot move your head too much as it holds the audiences attention. When you “perform” it hurts, it costs but you never show it. You have social grace. As you can see there a lot of rules, I would say close to fifty, along with all the necessary rules that apply to theatrical endeavours. Jacques LeCoq Where can we see bouffon being used in modern culture? Probably the most well-known modern day Bouffon almost everyone knows is Sacha Baron Cohen. He is a former student of Phillipe Gaulier and is brilliant at his parodies, for example Ali G, and probably his most well know Modern bouffon character, Borat. Many theatre artists these days allow - Eric Davies their training in bouffon to influence their work in as The Red some way or form. Some great Canadian modern day Bastard bouffon shows include Bruce Horak’s “This is Cancer” and Eric Davies, “The Red Bastard”.

Why do you love bouffon? How do you use it as an instructor at the U of A? I love bouffon because it adds a little bit of an edge to everything. It puts the audience on the edge of their seats and makes them really look at what they are doing in their beautiful lives. It is a great reflection on the current state humanity. I also love bouffon as it had a huge impact in my work with Mump and Smoot. When John Turner, Karen Hines and myself studied with Gaulier in the 90’s it helped give the dark edge we were looking for with Mump and Smoot and Karen’s clown/bouffon character Pochsy. It also gave us some great performing and teaching techniques.

As a teacher, the style helps the student learn; how to take risks, how to be grotesque, how to parody and how to go places they normally wouldn’t go intellectually, physically and emotionally. Philippe Gaulier

14 • TITUS BOUFFONIUS A CONVERSATION WITH THE PLAYWRIGHT COLLEEN MURPHY Was there an instigating moment that inspired you to write The Society for the Destitute Presents Titus Bouffonius? In 2015, the wonderful director, Stephen Drover, who was the Artistic Director of Rumble Theatre in Vancouver at the time, commissioned me to write an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. I jumped at the chance because I never adapted anything before, however, I found the play psychologically boring. I understand how brutality is used to claw and capture military and political power, and how one can screw oneself by challenging the military order of things but it was difficult for me to care for the characters except the mutilated or murdered children. I could access the play through the children but had difficulty finding the form.

What lead you to the bouffon style? During the time I was searching for a form, I was living in Edmonton and working as the Lee Playwright in Residence at U of A. I saw a lot of my friend Michael Kennard, a master clown. His magnificent work with John Turner in Mump & Smoot has inspired me for 20 years. One evening, while watching Michael’s students perform their Bouffon creations, I suddenly realized that bouffon was the form for the adaptation of Titus Andronicus. Why? Because the form allowed me to smash apart a play about power and empire and give it over to five powerless, dispossessed characters to perform.
