Mental Nocturnes: Night Thoughts on Man and Nature in the Poetry oj Eighteenth-Century America IGHT BECAME A LITERARY TOPIC of the acutest interest during the early decades of the eighteenth century. Only at night did Nthe stars' lucent argument on behalf of a universal, providential order stand fully revealed. Yet night, too, was the period when imagination—sponsor of dreams, delusions, and fantasies—held sway. When the sun set the question arose as to whether reason or imagi- nation possessed the greater power. Would Newton's glorious truth be seen arrayed across the heavens? Or would the clouds of fancy obscure that glory with a melancholic gloom? British and British-American writers tested their mental dispositions in nocturnal verse to discover whether lucid reason or the more troublesome imagination would prevail. Some British writers— Thomas Parnell, Robert Blair, Bishop Porteus, Charles Emily—em- ployed the "night piece" to complain about man's inability to tran- scend his situation in "this world of sin and death."1 Others—James Thomson, John Gay, and David Mallet—sought to redeem night by viewing it as an essential component in nature's harmony.2 In America the "night piece" became a particularly important vehicle for ex- pressing a pessimistic view of the relation of man to nature. Grub Street (Routledge Revivals)
Routledge Revivals Grub Street First published in 1972, this is the first detailed study of the milieu of the eighteenth-century literary hack and its significance in Augustan literature. Although the modern term ‘Grub Street’ has declined into vague metaphor, for the Augustan satirists it embodied not only an actual place but an emphatic lifestyle. Pat Rogers shows that the major satirists – Pope, Swift and Fielding – built a potent fiction surrounding the real circumstances in which the scribblers lived, and the impor- tance of this aspect of their writing. This understanding lies at the heart of Henry Fielding: A Life, by Martin Battestin, and it matters far more than many better-known connections between law and literature: that Scott was a lawyer, that Kafka was a lawyer, that Dickens was a solicitor's clerk, that Melville spent his work- ing life surrounded by judges. The most revealing passage in Fielding's novels comes near the end of Joseph Andrews. Book History 15 (2012), 48-70 Of Grubs and Other Insects: Constructing the Categories of “Ephemera” and “Literature” in Eighteenth-Century British Writing Paula McDowell Abstract The category “ephemera,” like the category “Literature,” is a classification that does powerful rhetorical, practical, ideological, and disciplinary work. This essay historicizes these value-laden classifications across disciplinary and period boundaries. It begins by suggesting how librarians and collectors have defined ephemera since the 1960s, then steps back to the eighteenth century in Britain, arguing that the categories of “ephemera” and “Literature” were reciprocally constructed parts of a classification system that was a response to the commercialization of letters and the proliferation of print. BALLAD OPERA IN ENGLAND: ITS SONGS, CONTRIBUTORS, AND INFLUENCE Julie Bumpus A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 7, 2010 Committee: Vincent Corrigan, Advisor Mary Natvig ii ABSTRACT Vincent Corrigan, Advisor The ballad opera was a popular genre of stage entertainment in England that flourished roughly from 1728 (beginning with John Gay's The Beggar's Opera) to 1760. Gay's original intention for the genre was to satirize not only the upper crust of British society, but also to mock the “excesses” of Italian opera, which had slowly been infiltrating the concert life of Britain. The Beggar's Opera and its successors were to be the answer to foreign opera on British soil: a truly nationalistic genre that essentially was a play (building on a long-standing tradition of English drama) with popular music interspersed throughout. My thesis explores the ways in which ballad operas were constructed, what meanings the songs may have held for playwrights and audiences, and what influence the genre had in England and abroad. The thesis begins with a general survey of the origins of ballad opera, covering theater music during the Commonwealth, Restoration theatre, the influence of Italian Opera in England, and The Beggar’s Opera. Next is a section on the playwrights and composers of ballad opera. The playwrights discussed are John Gay, Henry Fielding, and Colley Cibber. Purcell and Handel are used as examples of composers of source material and Mr. Seedo and Pepusch as composers and arrangers of ballad opera music. -

The Library of America Interviews David S. Shields about American Poetry of the 17th and 18th Centuries In connection with the publication in October 2007 of American Poetry: The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries , edited by David S. Shields, Rich Kelley conducted this exclusive interview for The Library of America e- Newsletter. Sign up for the free monthly e-Newsletter at www.loa.org . Collecting more than 300 poems by 108 poets, including many whose work has never been published before, American Poetry: The Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries is arguably the definitive anthology of early American poetry. What makes this volume so distinctive? There have been very few attempts at creating a comprehensive anthol - ogy of early American poetry. Samuel Kettell did it in the early 19th century. The last person to attempt this was Kenneth Silverman over a generation ago, and his volume had less than a quarter of the poems included here. This collection could not have been made 15 years ago, when a change took place in our under - standing of how early American culture operated. Until that point literary inves - tigators thought that everything that was important was printed . Then they discovered that, prior to the American Revolution, the majority of belletristic works and over 80% of what was written in poetic form appeared only in manu - script. Suddenly, the research paradigm changed and people begin to look in family papers and in commonplace books. Since about 1990 there has been this enormous recovery of the poetic literature, which is reflected in this collection. This volume redraws the landscape of early American poetry.
