Metamorfik Alan- ya Masifinin bir nap şeklinde Sedre Triyas'mm üzerine geldiği ve bunun da bir tektonik pencere olarak görüldüğü görü- şüne varılmıştır. Hadimopanella oezgueli n. gen. n. sp. (incertae sedis) ve üç yeni konodont türü bulunmuştur. ABSTRACT: in the area studied Cambrian to Triassie systems are distinguished by the use of conodonts and their fauna is deseribed briefly. it is believed that the metamorphic Alanya massif overlays the Sedre Triassie as a nappe, forming a teetonic window. Bu dü- ceklerinden elde eddlen lasyonunda kullanılan konodontlardan zey içinde bol olarak Conocoryphe, Oneotodus tenu4s yararlanarak, ülkemizin bir bölgesinin Öoryneocochus, vb. gibi Orta Kambriyen stratigrafisini biraz daha aydınlığa ka- Fumishina furnishi yaşındaki tribolitlere ve akrotretid bra- Hertzima bisulcata vuşturmak ve dolayısiyle jeolojik yapısı- kiyopodlara rastlanılmıştır. -

BERGSTRÖM AND ANNALISA FERRETTI Conodonts in Ordovician biostratigraphy The long time interval after Pander’s (1856) original conodont study can in terms of Ordovician conodont biostratigraphic research be subdivided into three periods, namely the Pioneer Period (1856-1955), the Transition Period (1955-1971), and the Modern Period (1971-Recent). During the pre-1920s, the few published conodont investigations were restricted to Europe and North America and were not concerned about the potential use of conodonts as guide fossils. Although primarily of taxonomic nature, the pioneer studies by Branson & Mehl, Stauffer, and Furnish during the 1930s represent the beginning of the use of conodonts in Ordovician biostratigraphy. However, no formal zones were introduced until Lindström (1955) proposed four conodont zones in the Lower Ordovician of Sweden, which marks the end of the Pioneer Period. Because Lindström’s zone classification was not followed by similar work outside Baltoscandia, the time interval up to the late 1960s can be regarded as a Transition Period. A milestone symposium volume, entitled ‘Conodont Biostratigraphy’ and published in 1971, 2 summarized much new information on Ordovician conodont biostratigraphy and is taken as the beginning of the Modern Period of Ordovician conodont biostratigraphy. In this volume, the Baltoscandic Ordovician was subdivided into named conodont zones whereas the North American Ordovician succession was classified into a series of lettered or numbered Faunas. Although most of the latter did not receive zone names until 1984, this classification has been used widely in North America. -

Huff 4 Department of Geology, University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH 45221 USA 5 Email: [email protected] 6 Keywords: K-bentonite, bentonite, tephra, explosive volcanism, volcanic ash 7 Abstract 8 Pyroclastic material in the form of altered volcanic ash or tephra has been reported and described 9 from one or more stratigraphic units from the Proterozoic to the Tertiary. This altered tephra, 10 variously called bentonite or K-bentonite or tonstein depending on the degree of alteration and 11 chemical composition, is often linked to large explosive volcanic eruptions that have occurred 12 repeatedly in the past. K-bentonite and bentonite layers are the key components of a larger group of 13 altered tephras that are useful for stratigraphic correlation and for interpreting the geodynamic 14 evolution of our planet. Bentonites generally form by diagenetic or hydrothermal alteration under 15 the influence of fluids with high Mg content and that leach alkali elements. Smectite composition is 16 partly controlled by parent rock chemistry. Studies have shown that K-bentonites often display 17 variations in layer charge and mixed-layer clay ratios and that these correlate with physical 18 properties and diagenetic history. The following is a review of known K-bentonite and related 19 occurrences of altered tephra throughout the time scale from Precambrian to Cenozoic. 20 Introduction 21 Volcanic eruptions are often, although by no means always, associated with a profuse output 22 of fine pyroclastic material, tephra. Tephra is a term used to describe all of the solid material 23 produced from a volcano during an eruption (Thorarinsson, 1944). -

Rexroad Indiana Geological Survey 611 North Walnut Grove Bloomington, Indiana 47405 ABSTRACT: A well-preserved and moderately diverse conodont faunule was recovered from five coal balls in the Springfield Coal Member of the Petersburg Formation from Peabody Coal Com- pany's Eby Pit, Lynnville Mine, in Warrick County, Indiana. The presence of Neognathodus roundyi and the other species recorded in this study is compatible with the middle Desmoinesian age of the Springfield. Idioprioniodus conjunctus is the most ecologically diagnostic of the conodonts and suggests organic-rich, quiet water with a low pH, which in turn suggests that the conodonts lived in a salt-water marsh bordered on one side by coal swamps and on another by near-normal marine waters. Apparently coal balls had multiple origins, and the origin of the conodont-bearing ones is uncertain. INTRODUCTION Because marine fossils are commonly associated with plant fossils in some coal balls, it is not surprising that conodonts have been reported from them. A half-dozen well-pre- served conodonts from Pennsylvanian coal balls from three different States were figured by Mamay and Yochelson (1962), but no other conodonts were figured; therefore, the overall conodont content in coal balls is unknown. To better understand the distribution of conodonts and their paleoecologic impor- tance in coal balls, samples were processed from coal balls of the middle Desmoinesian Springfield Coal Member of the Petersburg Formation from the Eby Pit of Peabody Coal Company's Lynnville Mine (SW'/4 , SWA, NE'A, Sec. -

Paseo de Ronda 47, 15011 A Coruña (Spain). [email protected] ABSTRACT A stratigraphic description of the Devonian and Carboniferous pre-Variscan rocks of the Pyrenees is presented. The successions are grouped into sedimentary domains that replace the “facies areas” proposed by previous authors for areas with homogeneous stratigraphy. The description of the sedimentary filling is divided into temporal intervals, where the previous stratigraphic correlation, based on lithological criteria, is supplemented by faunal data, especially conodont findings. A simple palaeogeographic model of the sedimentation during the Upper Palaeozoic and data related to southern boundary between the Pyrenean basin and the Cantabro-Ebroian Massif are discussed. Keywords: Devonian, Carboniferous, conodonts, Pyrenees, stratigraphy. RESUMEN Se ha realizado una descripción estratigráfica de las rocas devónicas y carboníferas pre- variscas de los Pirineos. Las sucesiones son agrupadas en dominios sedimentarios que sustituyen a las “áreas de facies” propuestas por los autores previos para zonas con una estratigrafía homogénea. La descripción del relleno sedimentario está dividida en intervalos de tiempo, donde la correlación estratigráfica basada en criterios litológicos está incrementada por los datos faunísticos, sobre todo los hallazgos de conodontos. -
