Everything you should know about starting your college career from those who’ve been there

TIME MANAGEMENT Whether classes are online or in-person, try to make a class schedule. Include all of your classes and club meetings on a calendar or daily planner. Add in the dates that home- work, tests and papers are due, and decide when you’re going to complete each assignment or study for exams.

Make sure you’re using time allotted to schoolwork effectively by turning your phone off, having a to-do list and working in a quiet space. It’s okay to ask roommates or family members to quiet down when you’re trying to work. — Melissa Denish ’22 Elon University

DIGITIZE YOUR WORKFLOW With certain classes being online and colleges having adopted digital forms of teaching and creating assignments, technology has become an integral part of the learning experience. I’ve found that the more I adapt to this with the way I work, the more productive I become.

I take all my notes on a computer or tablet and have moved all my textbooks to virtual ones. Try to find clubs that correspond with your major. CHOOSING A MAJOR It’s important to make sure your major is something that interests you enough that you can study it for four years. Choose an area of study that coincides with your post- graduate goals. MAKING FRIENDS In the first few weeks, everyone is feeling intimidated about talking to new people. Once you realize everyone is feeling nervous like you, it’ll be easier to open up to people. Just be authentic everywhere you go because that’s how you’ll attract people who are similar to you. One of its most popular programs, known as Retreat in the Snow, attracts roughly 80 students for a weekend of skiing and Judaism in Bend, Oregon. A featured event during one of the winter retreats included a mock shuk for students to learn more about Israeli culture. They were given fake shekels to buy items, including Israeli chocolates. When the weather is warmer, a group of about 20 female students from Oregon Hillel stay near the beach for a weekend retreat on the Pacific Coast during Rosh Chodesh. During these annual retreats, women have engaged in conversations about topics such as the #MeToo movement and body image. The women ring in Shabbat with a service atop a balcony overlooking the ocean. “It’s a space to congregate as women, like Jewish women have been for years,” said Sara Birch, who attends University of Oregon and is a member of the class of ’21. “People benefit from the energy and space we’re creating. Last year’s event was the first to include meditation, led by student Aliya Swanger, class of ’22, who serves as co-vice president of wellness at USC Hillel. Swanger said mediation allowed students to reduce stress and improve their mindset for the coming year. AS A CHILD, Sam Stack’s favorite family tradition was waking up early with his dad on Sundays to watch auto races on TV. Years later, only a sophomore at Virginia Tech, he spent his Sundays building and designing professional race cars for an Israeli startup in Tel Aviv. Stack, a mechanical engineering major, never thought he’d intern for a company like Griiip, which builds cars for international race competitions. His participation in the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers, a collegiate-level competition that challenges teams to design race cars, prepared him for the summer internship. ➞

AT GRIIIP, Stack designed three-di- mensional cars on his computer and used his English skills to create user manuals that drivers around the world could read. “Engineers need to gain experience in the field,” he said. “What you learn in school is not what you’d learn in the workplace.” Stack, class of ’21, was a participant in Hillel Onward Israel, which immerses American students in Israel for a summer or winter internship in Tel Aviv or Jeru- salem. The program also includes educational activities, professional development sessions and trips throughout the country. “I did a lot of work I didn’t expect to be doing, in the best way possible,” he said. Hillel International has run its own Onward Israel cohort for seven years. The program is for college students who have already participated in a short-term Israel program, such as Birthright Israel. Participants pay a highly subsidized program fee, depending on the program, plus the cost of airfare. Last summer, there were over 200 interns cosponsored by Hillel International. Onward Israel works with dozens of organizations and companies such as Deloitte, Magen Da- vid Adom and various government min- istries to place students in the internships they want. Jeannette Yust, class of ’20, knew she wanted to return to Israel after she went on a Birthright Israel trip. The Onward Israel experience, she said, allowed her to work in child psychology, a field that was applicable to her studies at the University of Delaware.
