New Jersey Lt. Gov. Visits Where ‘Engineering Meets Ops’
Thursday, May4, 2017 • APG News B5 New Jersey Lt. Gov. visits where ‘engineering meets ops’ By Kelly White Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. –The lieutenant governor of New Jersey visited the U.S. Army Material Command’s Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, or CERDEC, Ground Activity, or CGA, last month, to learn about the mission growth path. The CGA, which is part of CERDEC’s Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate, or S&TCD, is on the cutting edge of supporting this generation and next generation’s operational gaps for training and cyber activities, something Lt. Gov. Kimberly Guadagno wants to support from outside the wire. “To support the Army’s active duty component, the state has the ability and purview to help quality of life issues that benefit the military who live on or around the base, from economic development to school-related issues,” Guadagno said. “The state also can aid in roads, land management around the base [encroach- ment issues] and air space.” Tri-service joint base CGA, along with CERDEC’s Flight Activity, are part of the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst which is the only tri-service base in the country, servicing Army, Air Force and Navy, and the second U.S. ARMY PHOTO largest employer in the state of New Jersey. Lt. Gov. Kimberly Guadagno visited the CERDEC Ground Activity to learn about the mission growth path, March 30, 2017. Representing a very active community, Guadagno wants to help push and shape Lab coat and field base the tri-service joint base, which is known for maintaining controlled terrain; air community corridors and spectrum management. -
STAR WARS Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun Times, January 1, 1977)
STAR WARS Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun Times, January 1, 1977) Cast Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker , Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia , Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi , David Prowse as Darth Vader , James Earl Jones as Vader's Voice , Kenny Baker as R2D2 , Anthony Daniels as C3PO Directed by George Lucas, Produced by Gary Kurtz, Screenplay by Lucas, Rated PG 121 minutes Every once in a while I have what I think of as an out-of-the-body experience at a movie. When the ESP people use a phrase like that, they're referring to the sensation of the mind actually leaving the body and spiriting itself off to China or Peoria or a galaxy far, far away. When I use the phrase, I simply mean that my imagination has forgotten it is actually present in a movie theater and thinks it's up there on the screen. In a curious sense, the events in the movie seem real, and I seem to be a part of them. "Star Wars" works like that. My list of other out-of-the-body films is a short and odd one, ranging from the artistry of "Bonnie and Clyde" or "Cries and Whispers" to the slick commercialism of "Jaws" and the brutal strength of "Taxi Driver." On whatever level (sometimes I'm not at all sure) they engage me so immediately and powerfully that I lose my detachment, my analytical reserve. The movie's happening, and it's happening to me. What makes the "Star Wars" experience unique, though, is that it happens on such an innocent and often funny level. -
Star Wars by Matt Zoller Seitz “The a List: the National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films,” 2002
Star Wars By Matt Zoller Seitz “The A List: The National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films,” 2002 Reprinted by permission of the author Of all the films of the 1970s, none was more influen- tial than “Star Wars.” Other landmark works from that era could rightly claim to be more complex, more challenging, more adult, but none could claimed to be more widely seen and enjoyed. (Many saw it more than once.) This mythic adventure about a gee- whiz farm boy rescuing a princess and saving the galaxy proved that a primitive fairy tale with high-tech effects could thrill moviegoers the world over, regard- less of language, cultural difference, even age. It made stars outs of its unknown leads — Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer, Harrison Ford — and spawned a spinoff industry peddling tie-in merchandise, from toys and T-shirts to comic books and trading cards. It introduced new visual effects and sound technology that would change how films were produced. Its un- precedented financial success — the top grossing film of all time with $250 million in box office and $1 billion in merchandising — convinced the studios to abandon their old financial model, wherein lots of money was earned by lots of films, and embrace a new model, wherein ever-increasing amounts of money and effort were devoted to developing more movies like “Star Wars. Original release poster. Courtesy Library of Congress. The film’s detractors (they are numerous) often for- get that on paper “Star Wars” seemed weird and un- commercial. Lucas, an intense, detail-oriented film- mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness); Princess school grad, wanted to make “Star Wars” for years, Leia (Fisher), a tough-talking, straight-shooting diplo- but the major studios kept turning him away, fearing mat-spy who knew the whereabouts of plans that audiences still shaken by Vietnam, Woodstock, and could defeat the empire; Han Solo (Ford) , a cocky Watergate would laugh an earnest space fantasy space smuggler with a seven-foot-tall nonhuman right off the screen. -

www.knowitalljoe.com "THE STAR WARS SAGA ON LOCATION" Feature -2- British production designer Norman Reynolds, a double Oscar winner for STAR WARS ana RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, was given a million dollar budget to clear the valley of vegetation and construct a four acre stockade to house his 30,000 square foot platform which is topped by a sixty foot, fully-rigged, anti-gravity Sail Barge. The true significance of this set will remain a closely kept secret until RETURN OF THE JEDI opens on May 25, 1983. The JEDI crew was in the area for six months, employing more than fifty local residents ana pumping more than two million dollars into the local economy. Associate to the Producer Louis Friedman was relieved to discover that, almost without exception, "I could find anything we needed locally. I just had to look a bit longer ana harder." Assistant art director Chris Campbell concurs: "The merchants here really helped us a lot. They realized that with an operation of this size, when we ord~red a product, we needed it all-- not just a gallon or two." Some of the things they needed were two million gallons of water (drawn from the All American Canal) to continually dampen down and grade the only possible access road and sixteen thousand pounds of nails to keep the massiv~ Sail Barge structure steady. (More) "THE STAR WARS SAGA ON LOCATION" ... Featur e -3- The filming of the compl ex action and special effects sequence was completed in two weeks, exactly as planned despite daytime temper qtures of 120° and two days of intermittent sandstorms with sixty mile per hour winds which sent the one hundred twenty-five member cast and crew running for cover. -
