Parasite Fighters Parasite aircraft – are there to enhance the task of the parent – that continues with its own mission – which may be only to be a mother ship. Composite Aircraft – the part that detaches then completes the mission. (Not to be confused with more modern usage of composite construction – of different materials.) The Short-Mayo composite project, co-designed by Mayo and Shorts chief designer Arthur Gouge, comprised the Short S.21 Maia,(G-ADHK) which was a variant of the Short "C-Class" Empire flying-boat fitted with a trestle or pylon on the top of the fuselage to support the Short S.20 Mercury(G-ADHJ). Murphy** NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center, Edwards, California, 93523 “Air-launch” is defined as two or more air-vehicles joined and working together, that eventually separate in flight, and that have a combined performance greater than the sum of the individual parts. The use of the air-launch concept has taken many forms across civil, commercial, and military contexts throughout the history of aviation. Air-launch techniques have been applied for entertainment, movement of materiel and personnel, efficient execution of aeronautical research, increasing aircraft range, and enabling flexible and efficient launch of space vehicles. For each air-launch application identified in this paper, the motivation for that application is discussed. Luftwaffe's Secret KG 200 KG 200 took part in many covert missions against the Allies and became the subject of much postwar speculation. By Andrew J. Swanger for World War II Magazine The history of the German Luftwaffe in World War II has been examined by scores of authors and eyewitnesses. The case of Kampfgeschwader (Battle Wing) 200, or KG 200, is a different story, however. The real story of this special Luftwaffe unit has remained shrouded in mystery, and most members maintained their silence after the war. The commander of the unit, Colonel Werner Baumbach, a winner of the Knight's Cross and a celebrated Junkers Ju-88 bomber pilot, did not even mention KG 200 in his memoirs, Broken Swastika. KG 200 was a unique unit, which operated a wide variety of aircraft--from the Blohm und Voss Bv-222 Wiking (the largest flying boat of the era) to the Junkers Ju-52, Ju- 90, Ju-290 and Ju-188, the Heinkel He-111, and even captured British and American aircraft such as the Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. The earliest incarnation of KG 200 was Special Squadron Rowehl, a unit subordinate to the Abwehr, the German military intelligence organization. Colonel Theodor Rowehl, who had been a reconnaissance pilot in World War I, heard rumors that Poland was building new forts along its border with Germany. Now a civilian, Rowehl began flying photoreconnaissance missions over Poland in civilian aircraft. (Military planes were not allowed to fly in that area.) The Abwehr was impressed with Rowehl's photographs and paid him to continue his flights. -

From Luxury Liners to Aircraft Carriers: USS Wolverine and USS Sable By Sydney M. Swierenga May, 2020 Director of Thesis: M. Todd Bennett Major Department: History This thesis details the complex conversions of two Great Lakes passenger ships into flattop aircraft carriers in 1942 and 1943, and the subsequent training of thousands of pilots aboard the carriers. The entire US naval fleet in 1942 consisted of eight carriers—all of which were desperately needed to fight the Axis powers on the open oceans. To save time and materials, the Navy elected to convert existing ships rather than build new carriers. Lake carriers did not need massive hulls, armaments, elevators and cabins below deck for plane storage and personnel, but they did need realistic carrier operating conditions. The Great Lakes, especially Lake Michigan, offered wind and wave conditions resembling those found on the open oceans. Navy Pier, in Chicago, provided ideal docking, because it was close to Glenview Naval Air base by air and to Glenview’s satellite airfields where the planes were fielded, and pilots were bunked and fed. Hence, the carriers, Navy Pier, and Glenview had a symbiotic relationship; they each needed the other to allow the group to achieve its fullest potential. In 1942, the Navy requisitioned two of the largest passenger ships on the Lakes, SS Seeandbee and SS Greater Buffalo. American Shipbuilding Company retrofitted the two ships at their firm’s docks at Cleveland and Buffalo. SS Seeandbee’s conversion into USS Wolverine was completed in four months, but retrofitting SS Greater Buffalo into USS Sable took five months longer because the Navy decided to experiment with steel, instead of wood, decking. -

Focke-Wulf FW190 Now on Display at Cosford
14th October 2013 Focke-Wulf FW190 now on display at Cosford Autumn is off to a flying start at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford with the arrival of a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8. These German fighter aircraft were widely used by the Luftwaffe during World War Two and an example of this is now on display to visitors within the Museum’s Warplanes collection. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was a single-seat single-engine multi-role fighter-bomber, capable of carrying a larger bomb load than its counterpart the Messerschmitt Bf109. Entering Luftwaffe service in August 1941, the Fw 190 proved superior in many respects to the Royal Air Force’s main frontline fighter, the Spitfire V. It took the introduction of the much improved Spitfire IX in July 1942 for the RAF to gain an aircraft of equal capability. One of the more unusual roles for the Fw 190 was as part of the twin-aircraft drone combination, code- named mistletoe or Mistel. A single engine fighter was mounted on top of a twin engine bomber, and on lining up with the target the fighter detached itself, leaving the bomber, packed with explosives, to impact the target. Cosford’s Fw 190 is a unique survivor of a Mistel combination. Surrendered in Denmark in May 1945, the Fw 190 was part of a combination with a Junkers Ju 88, and assigned to a unit which trained Mistel crews. Flown to Germany as a twin combination, the Fw 190 was then split from its Ju 88 in order to be ferried to the UK for examination. -

NUNAWADING MILITARY HISTORY GROUP MINI NEWSLETTER No. 5 Why Anzac Day Evokes Fond Memories Since leaving Hobart to join the Navy in 1992, every Anzac Day morning Chief Petty Officer Scott Clear has messaged his Vietnam Veteran Dad to thank him for his service. This year, Chief Petty Officer Clear will hold true to that personally significant tradition, but rather than join his HMAS Kuttabul colleagues to march down the streets of Sydney’s CBD afterwards, he will proudly commemorate the day from his balcony, standing at dawn wearing a hand-knitted poppy. Chief Petty Officer Clear describes himself as an ‘army brat’ who was destined to join one of the ser- vices and follow his family’s strong military service history. “My Great-Uncle Jack Allen Clear served in WWII, was a POW in Burma, and sadly died whilst captured working on the Burma railway,” Chief Petty Officer Clear said. “My fa- ther, who is named after my Great-Uncle Jack, served in Vietnam, namely the infamous battle of Long Tan. “Growing up with this knowledge, I had - and continue to have - respect for their service from a very young age.
