The University of ’s Thacher Gallery presents:

This exhibition features works from the permanent collection of USF’s Donohue Rare Book Room and Arion Press with books, illustrations and portfolios designed, printed, and published by Bay Area master printer of Arion Press, including the recently completed Folio Bible.

Andrew Hoyem began training as a printer in 1966 with legendary San Francisco fine printer Robert Grabhorn, whose press operated from 1920 to 1965. Grabhorn-Hoyem specialized in typographical design, fine printing, and the publication of limited edition books, among them a celebrated Andrew Hoyem, printer and publisher, beside a Thompson edition of Ginsberg’s Laureate platen press, 1989. “Howl” in 1971. In 1974, Andrew Hoyem founded Arion Press and expanded the San Francisco tradition of high-quality bookmaking and typography to experimental forms and collaborations with contemporary artists. In the 1980’s, Hoyem expanded into the genre of the livre d’artiste, producing deluxe editions of prints by such noted artists as Jim Dine, , Wayne Theibaud, and . In 1989, Hoyem purchased the oldest and largest surviving type foundry in America, employing its trained typesetters.

Hoyem’s works are “marked by an unusual inventiveness” and his handset folio edition of Moby Dick has been described as “majestic” and “virtuoso.” Hoyem has published five books of poetry and illustrated Arion printings of Pale Fire and Venus and Adonis among others. Arion editions are collected by individuals, libraries, and museums around the world. A solo exhibition of his drawings was shown at the Legion of Honor Museum of San Francisco in 1975.
