In order to breed rice varieties with resistance to the brown planthopper, it is necessary to identify highly resistant germplasm sources. Seventy-three genotypes were evaluated using standard seed box screening technique over a period of two seasons that have shown varied levels of response reactions to the planthopper. Simultaneously, fifty-three microsatellite markers linked to BPH resistance were employed to find their association with BPH resistance. This association was estimated using regression based Single Marker Analysis (SMA) in Microsoft Excel. The significant marker trait associations (MTAs) were indicated by a P-value (< 0.05) along with corresponding R2 for each marker explaining the total phenotypic variation for BPH resistance accounted by markers. Statistically significant marker-trait associations were observed for five of the 39 polymorphic markers viz, RM335, RM510, RM589, RM8213 and RM494 indicating the possibility of significant putative genetic loci associated with BPH resistance on chromosomes 4, 6 and 10. The percentage of the total phenotypic variation as explained by the significant markers ranged from 1.0% to 24.4% suggesting the reliability of these genetic markers for further improvement of breeding for BPH resistance. Since these markers are linked with Bph3, Bph17(t), QBph6 and QBph10 genes/QTLs respectively, the presence of these genes in the resistant germplasm lines found in the study could be exploited through marker-assisted breeding programs for the development of BPH resistant cultivars. The Green Revolution-led high-yielding modern varieties (MVs) of rice and associated improved crop management practices since the late 1960s contributed significantly to achieving the food security in Asia (Barker and Herdt, 1985; Pingali et al, 1997 and Pingali and Hossain, 1999). Rice production (unmilled) in Southeast Asia rose from about 50 million tons during 1966 to about 140 million tons by 1999 with the annual growth rate of 3.2%, surpassing the population growth of 2.1% per annum.

We have also tried to explain MLE for some specific input variables for various rice productions (HB, HYV, and Aman). We have obtained technical efficiency scores as of all 240 rice farms. The stochastic frontier presents that signs of the βi parameters of the Cobb- Douglas stochastic frontier are all positive, as expected. The estimated coefficients of land, labor, fertilizer, irrigation and pesticides on the production of HB, HYV and Aman are positive and significant. The value of R2, R (Adjusted) and F for all rice variety indicates the well fitted for the model. The technical efficiency of hybrid rice, high yielding variety and aman are estimated for four unions in Joypurhat district in Bangladesh and technical inefficiency models are also presented as a function various form specific socio- economic variables. We have identified how these factors affect the efficiency performance.

    Fiasco in the field An update on hybrid rice in Asia GRAIN March 2005 In the early 1990s, it looked as if hybrid rice was on the way out. Companies drawn in by dreams of creating a hybrid seed market for rice akin to the North American hybrid maize market, were exasperated by years of investment without any returns. The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the agency leading the research effort, had not produced a single successful variety despite years of trying. China was the only country with a significant area planted to hybrid rice, but this too seemed to be in danger of decline as the state started to claw back its direct subsidies and support. But by the end of the decade, hybrid rice was making a comeback. An Asia Development Bank (ADB) financed project, led by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and IRRI, was resurrecting hybrid rice from the ashes. Hybrid rice was commercialised in several countries, transnational seed companies renewed their interest, and the area sown to hybrid rice was, according to the FAO and IRRI, on the rise across Asia. In 2000, a number of groups in Asia issued a collaborative report warning that the push for hybrid rice was stronger than ever.1 It documented how this push was really about setting up a lucrative rice seed industry and a stepping-stone to genetically modified (GM) rice. It revealed the actors involved in this push, from the multinational corporations to the international agencies (FAO, IRRI, and ADB) to the national governments and even local NGOs.

It has about 130 million farming families; the majority of them are small and marginal farmers who practice subsistence agriculture. The green revolution which occurred in late 1960s was a turning point in Indian agriculture. There was remarkable growth in agriculture during the Green Revolution period and this sector has been successful in keeping pace with growing demand for food grains in the country. However during 1990-2010 the food grain production in the country grew at an average 1.4 per cent, whereas the population growth was at 1.6 per cent. Fortunately, we have achieved a food surplus during last two years. But in the long run, concern of food security is likely to become more intense with increasing population and decreasing land availability.     The Climate Crisis: Climate Induced Migration in the Asia-Pacific Region Stefanie R. Montes The University of Texas at El Paso Capstone 2 Abstract Although global climate change has been occurring for many centuries, there has been an increase in the effects of climate change within the last few decades. The number of natural disasters has nearly doubled over the last few decades and researchers have been predicting the possible outcomes based that growth. The climate crisis has many organizations pushing for policymakers and researchers to find and implement solutions to the problems. The Asia-Pacific region is the most vulnerable to the effects of global climate change, mostly attributed to the vast number of poverty-stricken countries living along the coastlines. The effects of climate change have also affected the migration patterns of the Asia-Pacific region, as climate change influences many of the driving forces behind migration. The predicted effects of climate change claim that natural disasters will leave millions of people displaced and turning to migration for adaption. This paper seeks to identify the vulnerabilities of the Asia- Pacific region in terms of climate change and to identify how the effects will influence migration patterns. It also seeks to identify how policymakers can protect the region from the potential harms climate change can cause. The use of current policies regarding climate change, such as the Kyoto Protocol, may not be enough to combat the expected numbers of climate-induced migrants in the future. With very little efficient data available on the subject, the conclusions are based upon the identified driving forces of migration and the vulnerabilities of the Asia- Pacific region to climate change.
