She was transported for stealing a roll of black lace, though she claimed she was innocent. She was fortunate that she was allowed to take her baby, Rosanna, with her on the ship.     Port Jackson – Journal and letter Transcripts A Journal of a voyage from Portsmouth to New South Wales and China in the Lady Penrhyn, Merchantman William Cropton Server, Commander by Arthur Bowes Smyth, Surgeon, Jan-Feb, 1788 Manuscript Safe 1/15 Arthur Bowes Smyth (1750-1790), known as Bowes while in the colony, sailed with the First Fleet as Surgeon on board the Lady Penrhyn. He was responsible for the women convicts. Bowes Smyth took a great interest in natural history, collecting specimens and making drawings including the earliest extant illustration by a European of the emu. It is probably not the first sketch of an emu, as has sometimes been claimed; this may have been drawn by Lieutenant John Watts, also of the Lady Penrhyn, reproduced in Arthur Phillip's published account of the First Fleet and now lost. He returned to England on the Lady Penrhyn travelling via Lord Howe Island, Tahiti, China and St Helena. On Lord Howe Island he described or drew six of the islands birds. Three, including, the white gallinule, are now extinct, and a fourth is rare. Bowes Smyth arrived in England in August 1789. He died some months after his return and was buried on 31 March 1790 in Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex, where he had been born Jany. 23d. This day the Governor return'd from exploring the Coast & determin'd to go to Port Jackson, abt. 5 miles distant from Botany Bay by land, but 10 or 12 by Sea. This is Certainly in the Opinion of everyone one of the finest Harbours in the World, not excepting that of Trincamale in the East Indies, & was the adjacent Country fertile instead of being so barren as it is, it wd.

Rich people could provide their children with food, nice clothes, a warm house and an education. While some people were rich, others were poor. Poor people had no money and no food. They had to work as servants for the rich. Poor children did not attend school. When machines were invented, many people lost their jobs because workers were no longer needed. Health conditions during the 1700s were very poor. There was no clean water due to the pollution from factories. Manure from horses attracted flies, which spread diseases. A lack of medical care meant many people died from these diseases. Life in Britain During the 1700s • The overcrowded city streets were not a nice place to be during the 1700s. High levels of poverty resulted in a lot of crime. • Harsh punishments were put in place to try to stop the crime. People were convicted for crimes as small as stealing bread. Soon, the prisons became overcrowded with convicts. • One of the most common punishments was transportation to another country. Until 1782, Britain sent their convicts to America. After the War of Independence in 1783, America refused to take Britain’s convicts.

    First impressions and the first Australia Day Letter from Henry Waterhouse to his father, William Waterhouse, Sydney Cove, 11 July 1788, Manuscript 1/187 William Waterhouse was a page to the Duke of Cumberland. He married Susanna Brewer. They had twelve children including Henry, one of whose godparents was the Duke of Cumberland, and Elizabeth, who married George Bass. William Waterhouse corresponded with Henry, Elizabeth and George Bass. Henry Waterhouse wrote long informative letters to his father which now form an important record of early events in New South Wales and Norfolk Island In his long letter from Sydney Cove, 11 July 1788, William Waterhouse gives a detailed account of the arrival of the First Fleet in Botany Bay and the establishment of the settlement in Sydney Cove, reports Henry Lidgbird Ball's discovery of Lord Howe Island, describes Sydney's Aboriginal inhabitants and the colony's plants and animals, recounts his meeting with the French expedition led by the Comte de La Perouse and retells their story of their encounters with the natives of the Navigators' Islands [Samoa].     AUSTRALIAN JOINT COPYING PROJECT ARTHUR BOWES SMYTH Journal, 1787-89 Reel M933 The British Library Great Russell Street London WC1B 3DG National Library of Australia State Library of New South Wales Filmed: 1974 BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Arthur Bowes Smyth (1750-1790), the son of a surgeon, was born in Tolleshunt D’Arcy, Essex. He practised as a surgeon in his home town at least between 1778 and 1783. In March 1787 he was appointed surgeon to the ship’s company on the Lady Penhryn, one of the transports in the First Fleet, which carried 101 female convicts to New South Wales. He took charge of the prisoners on the ship when the convicts’ surgeon fell ill at Tenerife. The Lady Penrhyn arrived at Botany Bay on 20 January 1788 and left the colony on 5 May 1788. During his brief stay, Smyth (who at this time was known as Arthur Bowes) collected natural history specimens and made some of the first sketches of Australian fauna, including a kangaroo and an emu. On the long voyage back to England, he visited Lord Howe Island, Tahiti, Macao, Canton and St Helena. He died a few months after his return. THE JOURNALS OF ARTHUR BOWES SMYTH The original journal of Bowes Smyth is held by the National Library of Australia (MS 4568). It was purchased in 1970. A fair copy by Bowes is held in the Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales. It was acquired in 1915. Another contemporary copy, filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project, is in the British Library (Add MS 47966).

    The Dream – Or, An Unthinkable History Written in Memory of Women Transported to Botany Bay1787-1788 Joan Contessa Phillip PhD 2008 UNSW Supervisor: Dr Paul Dawson School of English, Media and Performing Arts Abstract Written in memory of the first women convicts transported to Botany Bay, this unthinkable history, a concept posed by the historian, Paul Carter, is an experiment in extending the boundaries of academic remembering, so that the complex lives of those resilient women might be given recognition. Researching the women’s lives required an ethnographic method, or ‘spatialized’ history, based on original archival research, together with research of rituals, art, literature, newspapers and music; and, importantly, the laws which circumscribed their behaviour. A research focus was thus the administration of criminal codes, including the development of the adversarial court and the characters of prominent judges, most especially the role and character of the Recorder of London. Theories of history based on the work of philosophers such as Heidegger, Benjamin, Deleuze, Guattari, Derrida, Foucault and the ethical philosophy of Wyschogrod, with her feminist perspective, have influenced narrative themes and tropes. This experimental hybridization of historical methods and the poetics of fiction might be classified as fictocritical historiography, where fictocritical functions as an epithet, not a polarity, as is the case with ficto-historiography and the coinage, faction. The semi-omniscient, intrusive voice of the narrator and dialogic placement of other ‘voices’, variously contrary, affirmative, informative or philosophical are ways in which the experiment enters debates about the relationship between history and fiction and the function of remembering. The incompleteness of records, their silences and partialities, the forensic reading required to contextualize them, the perspective from which the narrative is told, together with the metaphorical levels of all writing, are explicitly acknowledged.
