Of the above research contributions the following are highlighted (marked in solid black in Table 1): Paper 75 (www.technion.ac.il/~avi/avi.htm): Perelman and Ostfeld A. (2013). "Operation of remote mobile sensors for security of drinking water distribution systems" – published in Water Research, this study is the first on optimizing the operation and location of Mobile Wireless Sensor Networks (MWSNs) in water distribution systems. MWSNs are an important subset of water sensor networks technology. An emerging opportunity is the deployment of MWSNs to monitor the status of water distribution systems. Such multi-parameter sensors are capable of collecting and transmitting hydraulic and water quality measurements at fine temporal resolution, thus providing an accurate real-time representation of the values of key variables throughout a water distribution system. Paper 67: Ostfeld (2012). "Optimal reliable design and operation of water distribution systems through decomposition" – published in Water Resources Research (WRR) this work suggests an innovative approach for reliability inclusion in optimal design of water distribution systems through decomposition, in which loadings (i.e., demands) are increased to a level which yields optimal residual capacity of the designed system. Paper 65: Perelman et al. (2012). "Event detection in water distribution systems from multivariate water quality time series" – this is a cover page, featured manuscript on water quality event detection published at Environmental Science and Technology (EST). Water quality event detection is one of the current foremost challenging topics in water distribution systems water quality and security enhancement: how regular on-line hydraulic (e.g., pressure, flow) and water quality (e.g., pH, free chlorine) measurements at different network locations can be efficiently interpreted to detect accidental or deliberate water quality contamination intrusions. This study introduces a new water quality event detection methodology through utilizing artificial neural networks (ANNs) for studying the interplay between multivariate water quality parameters and for detecting possible outliers, followed by probability updating of stochastic contamination events through a recursively application of Bayes’ rule. Paper 54: Housh et al. (2011). "Optimal multi-year management of a water supply system under uncertainty: robust counterpart approach" – this study is unique in applying the robust counterpart (RC) optimization methodology developed by 1Ben-Tal et al. (2009) to water 2

resources systems. This work opened the door to further extensions and contributions [see papers 72, and 76] ------1 Ben-Tal A., L. El Ghaoui, and A. Nemirovski (2009). "Robust Optimization", 564 pp., Princeton University Press N. J.

UNIQUE CONTRIBUTION Paper 15 [cited 140 times (SCOPUS)]: Ostfeld and Salomons (2004). "Optimal layout of early warning detection stations for water distribution systems security" – were the first to develop an early warning detection system methodology based on a genetic algorithm tailored made to Monte Carlo sampling for sensor network location, taking into consideration the unsteady flow regime of the water quantity and quality within the system. The methodology set the basis for all other developed schemes for sensor networks placements.

Other significant contributions:

Opher and Ostfeld (2011) (paper 55). "A coupled model tree (MT) genetic algorithm (GA) scheme for biofouling assessment in pipelines" – presented an innovative hybrid model-tree genetic algorithm scheme for assessing the extent of biofouling formations on the inner surfaces of water supply pipelines. The model introduces a generic novel methodology for biofouling prediction for cases in which data is limited. The optimal design problem of a water distribution system is to find the water distribution system's component characteristics (e.g., pipe diameters, pump heads and maximum power, reservoir storage volumes, etc.), which minimize the system's capital and operational costs such that its hydraulic laws are maintained (i.e., Kirchoff's Laws No. 1 and 2), and constraints on quantities and pressures at the consumers are fulfilled. This problem is extremely difficult to handle due to the non-smoothness of the objective function and the large number of decision variables and constraints. Ostfeld (2005) (paper 19) was the first to develop a genetic algorithm framework for simultaneously optimizing the design and operation of water distribution systems, including water quality considerations and treatment plants under multiple extended period loading conditions. The rapid advance in information processing systems, along with the increasing data availability have directed engineering research towards the development of intelligent systems which can evolve models of natural phenomena automatically. This is the field of data driven modeling, which is the study of computer algorithms which improve automatically through experience. Since the last decade, data driven modeling techniques in both hydrology and water resources engineering are gaining an increasing interest Preis and Ostfeld (2007) (paper 27) developed and applied a new methodology comprised of a hybrid genetic algorithm - model trees - data driven model for flow and contaminant runoff predictions in watersheds. The methodology was successfully applied on Meshushim watershed, a sub- watershed of Lake Kinneret (the Sea of Galilee) basin. Ostfeld and Salomons (2005) (paper 20) presented a new methodology for calibrating the 2D surface water quantity and quality model CE-QUAL-W2, overcoming the high, non-applicable computational efforts required if a conventional calibration search technique was used, while retaining the quality of the final calibration results. The method is a combination of a novel "hurdle-race" and a hybrid Genetic-k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm (GA-kNN). The "hurdle race" is formulated for accepting or rejecting a proposed set of parameters during a CE-QUAL-W2 simulation; the k- Nearest Neighbor algorithm (kNN) - for approximating the objective function response surface; and the genetic algorithm - for linking both.
