NED GETS EARLY THUMB--Of the first 35 career ejections for manager Ned Yost, none had ever come before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first inning, but it came to pass in his 36th career thumbing as he was shown the door by plate Paul Emmel after a first inning was called on James Shields yesterday...it was his third ejection this year, the first time in his career that Emmel was the tosser and first time he’s been banged for arguing a balk. HOLLY MAINTAINS A.L. RESCUE LEAD--Greg Holland tossed a scoreless ninth in Chicago on Sunday to record his 20th save in 21 tries this year and maintain the American League save lead...a first time All-Star in 2013, Holland has made good on 60 of his last 62 (96.8%) since May 30 of last season, the second-highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...only Huston Street (97.6%), who has converted 40 of his last 41, has a higher percentage...since that date, Greg has 7 more saves than any other pitcher in baseball ( - 53) and has allowed just 8 earned runs in 77.2 innings for a 0.93 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .165 average...he’s also recorded 117 strikeouts in those 77.2 innings, for an A.L.-best 13.55 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.
