Monday 22 April 2013: to Macquarie University with Max Suich to observe the installation of Vic (The Sorcerer) Carroll, as Doctor of Letters (honoris causa). In his address to graduates, Dr Carroll said: “That CV the vice chancellor just read to you in no way prepared me for how to respond to the letter I received from him last November telling me that the University Council had decided to confer on me a Doctor of Letters honoris causa in recognition of my contributions to journalism. “I have been ever conscious of what journalism has done for me in providing me with a living wage for an important phase of my life and particularly for driving my continuing education for the last 60 years. But what I had done for journalism? “That was a foreign country I had not risked exploring. Fortunately, help was at hand. I had been reading a review of a new book containing letters written around 1903 by the German poet Rainer Maria Rilke [1875-1926]. “Rilke had gone to Paris to soak up the culture and write about the sculptor [Auguste] Rodin [1840-1917]. Rilke was shocked. Rodin didn’t wait around for inspiration. Rodin worked all the time. And he worked on the special thing that he saw in everything. Rilke got the message. The tabloid Indy exceeded expectations when it boosted overall sales of the Independent by 30,000 on its first day. It sold 42,000 copies of an 80,000 print run while sales of the broadsheet dipped 12,000. Queensland Newspapers managing director Jerry Harris believes the broadsheet/tabloid sister act could give the company the best of both worlds and act as a disincentive to Fairfax ambitions in the north. It could assist the company in some of the lower-circulation areas for the Courier-Mail, such as Brisbane’s south-west and regional Queensland (David Nason, ‘Independent’s tabloid turnaround gets Brisbane broadsheet thinking’, Australian, Media liftout, 30 October 2003, p.3). -

Our last Australia and the United Nations: Report Card was published in 2007 and marked a point in time when we were highly disappointed with Australia’s engagement with the UN. Australia was not actively contributing in the General Assembly, nor working hard to advance the Millennium Development Goals. We were not rising to meet the challenge of climate change and had just staged an intervention in the Northern Territory that the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples later found to be incompatible with Australia’s international human rights obligations. The 2013 Report Card focuses on Australia’s activities following the publication of the last Report Card in 2007 up until the federal election on 7 September 2013. -

THE RT. HON. LORD JUSTICE LEVESON HOLD THE FRONT PAGE: NEWS-GATHERING IN A TIME OF CHANGE UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA 12 DECEMBER 2012 Introduction 1. It is a real privilege to have been asked to give this public lecture and, echoing the Vice Chancellor, I am pleased to acknowledge that we are standing on the land of the Wurundjeri people and to pay respect to their Elders and families past and present. I would also like to thank the Centre for Advanced Journalism at the University of Melbourne for the invitation. I am delighted to be here. 2. I hope you will forgive me for providing some context to what I am about to say. As you are aware, I have spent the last 17 months engaged in an Inquiry into the culture, practices and ethics of the press. The Report was published nearly a fortnight ago, on 29 November 2012, and, as I have said before, it may be that some of you are hoping that I will elaborate. If you are, I am afraid that you are going to be disappointed. When I launched the Report, which must be read in the context of the Terms of Reference for the Inquiry, I said this: ‘I believe that the Report can and must speak for itself; to that end, I will be making no further comment. Nobody will be speaking for me about its contents either now or in the future.’ 3. The reason is very simple. I treat the Report as a judgment and judges simply do not enter into discussion about judgments they have given; they do not respond 1 to comment, however misconceived; neither do they seek to correct error. -

Message sent on behalf of Garry Linnell, Editorial Director, Metro Media I'm delighted to announce the following appointments: Glenn Burge has been appointed Executive Editor, Metro, effective immediately. This new role has been formed out of the findings of the staff-led editorial review. Reporting to me, Glenn will be responsible for overall Metro editorial budgets, editorial strategy projects and the ongoing content management system project. As project director of the Editorial Review, he will also steer the implementation of our new newsroom operating model over the coming months. As we bring our print and digital teams together to work as one, there is no-one better qualified in Metro to assist me in this new role than Glenn. Until last year Glenn was Editorial Director of Fairfax Business Media and had been Editor of The Australian Financial Review for nine years, where he guided that masthead’s print and digital integration and the adoption of the Methode content system. He was also responsible for FRG’s magazine division, including BRW. He joined the AFR in 1998 from a deputy editor role at The Sydney Morning Herald where he was responsible for the Business section. Prior to management roles he was a senior reporter and columnist for the SMH. Glenn began his career in journalism as a casual copy person at the Sunday Telegraph in 1978 while completing a Bachelor of Arts and Law degree. He is also co-author of the highly-acclaimed 1992 book Corporate Cannibals: The Taking of Fairfax. Darren Burden has been appointed National Editor. -
