Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction Ismat Chughtai, Sa'adat Hasan Manto
Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction I , Sa‘adat Hasan Manto, Krishan Chandar, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Kaifi Azmi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Ali Sardar Jafri, Majaz, Meeraji, and Khawaja Ahmed Abbas. These are some of the names that come to mind when we think of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and modern Urdu literature. But how many people know that every one of these writers was also involved with the Bombay film indus- try and was closely associated with film directors, actors, singers and pro- ducers? Ismat Chughtai’s husband Shahid Latif was a director and he and Ismat Chughtai worked together in his lifetime. After Shahid’s death Ismat Chughtai continued the work alone. In all, she wrote scripts for twelve films, the most notable among them ◊iddµ, Buzdil, Sån® kµ ≤µ∞y≥, and Garm Hav≥. She also acted in Shyam Benegal’s Jun∑n. Khawaja Ahmed Abbas made a name for himself as director and producer for his own films and also by writing scripts for some of Raj Kapoor’s best- known films. Manto, Krishan Chandar and Bedi also wrote scripts for the Bombay films, while all of the above-mentioned poets provided lyrics for some of the most alluring and enduring film songs ever to come out of India. In remembering Kaifi Azmi, Ranjit Hoskote says that the felicities of Urdu poetry and prose entered the consciousness of a vast, national audience through the medium of the popular Hindi cinema; for which masters of Urdu prose, such as Sadat [sic] Hasan Manto, wrote scripts, while many of the Progressives, Azmi included, provided lyrics. -

These indices are: • Nifty 50 & short duration debt –Dynamic P/E index and • Nifty 50 & short duration debt – Dynamic P/B index. The indices compare the current price-earnings ratio (P/E) or price-book ratio (P/B) with historical P/E or P/B ratio of Nifty 50 in the previous seven years. Identity of Muslim Women in Hindi Movies
EUROPEAN ACADEMIC RESEARCH, VOL. I, ISSUE 6/ SEPEMBER 2013 ISSN 2286-4822, www.euacademic.org IMPACT FACTOR: 0.485 (GIF) Identity of Muslim Women in Hindi Movies KUMAR PARAG Department of Humanities NIT, Jalandhar India Abstract: Hindi movies are made with male gaze in view, the images of women are discussed sociologically or semiotically or as subservience. In such circumstances when Muslim women are projected, she is doubly marginalized. First as a woman, second as a representative of minority community. But this stereotype images were broken by Hindi movies like Nikaah (marriage) in 1982, Bazaar (market) in 1982, Bombay in 1994 and Fiza (atmosphere) in 2003. In these movies female protagonists enjoy key positions and try to break out of social environmental forces which are controlled by men. It also poses question to the audience of gender issues especially belonging to middle classes and the process of questioning is carried out at multiple levels through characterization and narrative modes. Here, the characters of Muslim women are not treated in abstract manner; in fact the basic projection centers around the need to be accepted and respected individually with Muslim woman’s journey towards self-definition. The paper is an enquiry of the representation of Muslim women in Hindi movies where a woman has to face social prejudices, orthodoxies and beliefs which are articulated and challenged, formulating a counter – hegemonic feminist discourse. Key words: Identity of Muslim women, Hindi movies, Socio-economic perspective, female emancipation. The issue of identity is central to female emancipation. When this question is attached to gender relations in a male dominated society especially Muslim community in India, it 1249 Kumar Parag – Identity of Muslim Women in Hindi Movies acquires multiple dimensions. -

Uddhavtakes Oath As Cmalong with Six Other Alliance Leaders

Bhaire Uddhav takes oath as CM along with six other alliance leaders MUMBAI: Shiv Sena president Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray was sworn-in as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra in a grand function held at the Shivaji Park here on Thursday evening. State's Governor BS Koshyari administered the oath of office and secrecy to Uddhav Thackeray, 59, who sported a striking saffron-colored 'kurta-pyjama', the official colour of his party. In an unusual gesture, soon after completing the formalities, Uddhav Thackeray stepped to the front of the stage and knelt down, touched his hands and head on the floor to express his gratitude to the people of Maharashtra for the honour bestowed on him. Uddhav took oath as the 18th chief minister of the state, ending the month-long political crisis in Maharashtra. After the swearing-in ceremony, the newly-appointed Maharashtra CM went to hold the first meeting of his cabinet around 8 PM. The 59-year-old leader also became the third Shiv Sena leader after Manohar Joshi and Narayan Rane to become the CM of Maharashtra. Uddhav's ascension to the top post came after days of political tussle and negotiations between the Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress to form a coalition government after Sena decided to snap its ties with BJP over the chief minister’s post. Besides Uddhav, several other alliance leaders - Congress' Balasaheb Thorat and Nitin Raut, NCP leaders Chhagan Chandrakant Bhujbal and Jayant Rajaram Patil and Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde and Subhash Desai - also took oath at Mumbai's iconic Shivaji Park, which is the favourite venue for Sghiv Sena-sponsored events, which includes founder Bal Thackeray's iconic Dussehra rallies.
