FC Porto and Athletic Club met 58 years ago in what was a first taste of European competition for both sides. They renew acquaintance again with the Portuguese side eager to build on their good start in Group H. Previous meetings • Athletic had the better of things in the 1956/57 European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round, first winning 2-1 at Estádio das Antas. Captain Agustín Gainza put the visitors ahead early on and Canito fired the winner after José Maria Matos had equalised. • The lineups on 20 September 1956 were: Porto: Carrelo, Mendes, Barbosa, Arcanjo, Pedroto, Da Costa, Hernâni, Gonçalves, Jaburú, Perdigão, Matos. Athletic: Cedrun, Orue, Garay, Canito, Lauzirica, Maguregui, Azcarate, Marcaida, Merodio, Uribe, Gainza. • In the return a hat-trick by José Luis Artetxe edged Athletic to another narrow victory, with Hernâni and Jorge Jaburú on target for Porto in the first half. The visitors had Jaburú and Virgílio Mendes sent off. Match background Porto • Porto have been eliminated from three European competitions in the past two seasons by Spanish clubs, losing 4-2 on aggregate to Sevilla FC in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League quarter-final after a 1-0 win at home. • Earlier last season they also came off worse in the UEFA Champions League group stage against Club Atlético de Madrid, going down 2-1 at home and 2-0 away. That latter defeat, on matchday six, ended their hopes of progressing. • In 2012/13 Porto's UEFA Champions League hopes were ended in the round of 16 by Málaga CF, who won 2-0 in Spain after Porto's 1-0 home win. • Porto fared better against Villarreal CF in their triumphant 2010/11 UEFA Europa League campaign, winning 5-1 at home in the semi-finals en route to a 7-4 aggregate triumph. • Porto's home record against Spanish visitors is W9 D3 L8. 11 FC Porto - Athletic Club Tuesday 21 October 2014 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit Estádio do Dragão, Porto Head coach FC Porto: Julen Lopetegui Date of birth: 28 August 1966 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: San Sebastián CF, Castilla CF, UD Las Palmas, Real Madrid CF, CD Logroñés, FC Barcelona, de Madrid, Spain Coaching career: Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, Real Madrid Castilla, Spain Under-19s, Spain Under-20s, Spain Under- 21s, FC Porto • Lopetegui's promising goalkeeping performances for de Fútbol's youth sides led to a move to Real Madrid. The Basque native progressed into the senior squad, but, starved of opportunities, switched to Logroñes, where he made 107 Spanish top-flight appearances over three seasons. • Those displays earned a move to Barcelona but again he found playing time limited, prompting a transfer to Rayo Vallecano, where he featured 112 times until retirement in 2002. He earned one senior international cap and was part of Spain's 1994 FIFA World Cup squad. • Started his coaching career in 2003/04, at second division Rayo, but the experience was short-lived – he was dismissed after ten games. After five years away from the bench he returned to active duty in 2008/09, with Real Madrid Castilla, ending the campaign in sixth place. • In 2010 Lopetegui joined the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and led the U19s to the European title two years later before reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2013. He had assumed control of the U21s in August 2012 and guided the holders to the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. • In Israel, he steered the U21s to their second consecutive continental title. Lopetegui left the RFEF at the end of his contract with the team in command of their qualifying group for the 2015 finals. On 6 May 2014, he returned to club duties with Porto. Athletic Club: Ernesto Valverde Date of birth: 9 February 1964 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Deportivo Alavés, RCD Espanyol, FC Barcelona, Athletic Club, RCD Mallorca Coaching career: Athletic Club, RCD Espanyol, Olympiacos FC (twice), Villarreal CF, Valencia CF, Athletic Club • Known as 'Txingurri' – or worker ant – as a player, former striker Valverde scored 44 goals in 170 appearances over a six-year stay with Athletic. Had previously helped Espanyol to a third-place Liga finish in 1987 and an appearance in the following season's UEFA Cup final, which they lost on penalties to Bayer 04 Leverkusen. • Began coaching career in Athletic's youth ranks before stepping up to handle first-team affairs with the Basque club in 2003/04; guided the Leones to UEFA Cup qualification in his first term in charge. • Valverde again found himself losing a UEFA Cup final on penalties in 2007 – this time as coach of Espanyol – with Liga rivals Sevilla FC emerging victorious in Glasgow. • In his first season outside Spain, steered Olympiacos to a Greek league and cup double in 2008/09 before signing a one-year deal with Villarreal in June 2009. Was sacked the following January with the Yellow Submarine in tenth. • Rejoined Olympiacos in August 2010, lifting another championship at the end of his first campaign. Added a second domestic double the next year but then stood down, taking the Valencia helm in December 2012 on a deal until the end of the season. Reappointed by Athletic in June 2013 and took them to fourth in the Liga in his first term back.
