Meet the Staff continued...

Hi, I’m Tommy Maroon, and I will cover a lot of sports for the newspaper. I’m currently 12 years old and an Explorer. I’m starting a plush YouTube channel with my little brother on New Year’s Eve, 2016. If you love Mario, Sonic, Kirby, Donkey Kong and Pikman, you must subscribe to this channel! I hope you enjoy my articles this year!! Hi! I’m Emily Cheng. I’m 11 years old and so is my twin sister, Amanda. I have a few pets too. I own two hermit crabs that I share with my sister and mom, and one ham- ster that is for me and me alone. I used to have three hermit crabs and some fish. I have always wanted a Poodle. I am also on Glitter Girls Diamond and in a show as one of the lead roles. These things a just a few things about me. Hi I’m Evan Antonius and I’m mostly a photographer so I will almost never do an article on something unless it's something I'm really passionate about or something that I think the readers (that's you) would like. You might see me with a camera during tail- gates, parties or big events, like the costume contest on Halloween. I will be taking pictures of kids that costumes I think are cool and the winners of the contest, but please do not ask me to take any pictures of you or your friends. I will tell you if I want to take a picture of you so you don’t have to be surprised. Things I like are Pokemon Go (I mean who doesn’t like it), tailgates, volleyball, basketball, football, penguins, Adam Ruins Everything, THE FLASH, and Legends of Tomorrow. I know a lot about superheroes so I ace the superhero quiz every time. I play percussion and that is basi- cally drums, xylophone, and cymbals. Things I dislike: people who ask me to take their pictures, violence, home work, people that tell me what to do for no good reason. Hey readers! I’m Morgan Monasterio, and this is my autobiography! I’m going to be writing some articles this year, so if you want to know who I am, this is the right place to know more about me! Likes: I love reading, writing, sleeping, and spending time with my buddies. Dislikes: I don’t have any My name is Rahul Ramasamy. The Best Way To Start School! By Morgan Monasterio

The Best Way To Start School! By Morgan Monasterio Hey, I’ Morgan Monasterio. I’m going to talk about some better ways to start school. Imagine this, you wake up for school at 6:15 in the morning, and realize your bus comes at 9:00 and school starts at 9:30! How would that feel? Extra sleep, more time to eat breakfast, time to get dressed, everything you need to do in the morning, you have extra time! Now you only need to wake up at 7:00 or 8:00! Here are some really surprising facts you might just want to hear! You can have insomnia, or the trouble to sleep, and that results to accidentally sleeping on the job. A few years ago, an oil spill almost happened because of sleeping on the job! Now let’s jump into these important details I am about to tell you. First of all, some kids have such a short breakfast because they woke up late that they often can’t focus in school. It is very harsh to these kids, and everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Eating breakfast controls a child’s behavior with most of their school day, and that results to getting in trouble. You could also be diagnosed with anxiety or depression. Another reason is that there are displeased kids. Kids sometimes come up with outrageous reasons to tell the nurse to go home and sleep such as, ‘I am sick. I have a bad cold that I just found out.’ or ‘I threw up and cleaned it up and need to go home.’ and the last reason, ‘My stomach is killing me.’ These are all kid reasons why they want to go home. They are so tired sometimes that they purposely don’t pay attention in school. Another accurate reason is that the number one thing to do at night is sleep. Here are some very effective reasons. One, sleep helps your body repair vessels in your body, or heal broken bones or a damaged system that you hurt badly. This is essential to brain health, which helps you focus the next day. When you wake up early, that doesn’t benefit your health. For example, if there was a bad bug, and you got it, if you slept a lot better with no lights on, you would probably get that bug out of your system. Why do you need the lights off you say? Well, it is scientifically proven that if you have a bright light on, your brain thinks you are technically still awake. So, if you are wondering why lack of sleep affects you, go search up ‘if you lack sleep’. There are dozens of answers to that question. So if you stay up and go to sleep at midnight, think again!4 The HMS You Stinger want toFall sleepEdition 2016in, and get a good night's sleep!

No Strikes, No Detentions? By: Emily Cheng

Have you been getting strikes and detentions? Well fear no more!

You can get, Lunch Detentions, Thursday Detentions, and Saturday Detentions. Lunch Detention: You need 3 strikes to get a Lunch Detention in sixth grade. You cannot buy lunch, you can only pack. It is during your lunch time. In what- ever room is assigned. Thursday Detention: You need 5 lunch detentions to get a Thursday Detention. It is after school from 2:30pm - 4:30pm (You must be picked up at 4:30pm) You also must have work (including books) to do in detention. Saturday Detention: You need to bring work. It’s up to Mr. James and Mr. Hen- ry to get a Saturday Detention. Saturday Detention is at 8:00am - 12:00pm. It is at the Highland High School Media Center. -More information in your assignment notebook on page 9

Excuses, Excuses Don’t make up silly excuses not to get detentions. You will end up having to have detentions the next day. Also don’t skip school, just because you have a detention. You may have an activity on Thursday or Saturday. If you do, make it up and do it for a study hall, or another day. If you do not go to detentions, it will lead to further consequences.

When someone in your class is talking you should be quiet. If you need to move seats because you are by your friends, then you should definitely move seats. It will be for the better.

Are you worried about forgetting a text book, binder, or homework? You can try to remember to bring things home and to class by getting notebook paper, and writ- ing down the books, binders, etc., that you need to bring home or to class. Don’t try to hide the fact that you forgot something. The teachers will find out sooner

Sports Tommy Maroon

Tribe Making Push for October By Tommy Maroon

If you’re a diehard Cleveland fan, 2016 is probably the best year in sports you’ve probably ever seen. The Cleveland Monsters won the 2016 Calder Cup (even though that didn’t end the drought). But however, eight days later, the Cavs overcame a 3- 1 deficit on the 73-9 Golden State Warriors to win the NBA Finals and end a frustrating drought. Lastly, the Indians.

The Cleveland Indians have had a terrific season. Despite the starting rotation looking weaker than they had the past couple of years, Corey Kluber is making a statement for himself in the A.L. Cy Young (best pitcher in each league) race, which could be his second time winning it. He owns a terrific earned run average (ERA), about 20 wins, and over 200 strikeouts (SO). With Dan- ny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco hurt, batters must focus on Kluber.

The hitting is starting to pick up the slack they did the past couple of seasons. Guys like Francisco Lindor and Jason Kipnis have foreshadowed Omar Vizquel and Carlos Baerga in the 90’s. Home run hitters like Mike Napoli and Carlos Santana have foreshadowed Jim Thome and Albert Belle (also in the 90’s). Also, Tyler Naquin is in a race with Michael Fulmer and Gary Sanchez for AL Rookie of the Year. These guys clinched the AL Central on September 26th thanks to a Coco Crisp home run. Are you cuckoo for Coco Crisp?

Despite a powerful team, can they beat these powerful teams that have opponents feared. The Toronto Blue Jays have great pitchers like J.A. Happ to go along with big hitters like Jose Bau- tista, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Donaldson. The Boston Red Sox have had MVP candidates Xander Bogaerts, David Ortiz (in his final season), Mookie Betts, Dustin Pedoria, Hanley Ramirez and Jackie Bradley Jr. Not only that, but they’ve got powerful pitchers like Rick Porcello, Drew Pomeranz, David Price and Steven Wright. The Baltimore Orioles own powerful relievers like Brad Brach, Darren O’Day and Zach Britton and the Detroit Tigers own Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez and Victor Martinez. The Texas Rangers have power hitters like Jonathan Lucroy, Carlos Beltran, Adrian Beltre to go along with ace Cole Hamels.

The Tribe are also going to play against some tough teams if they make it to the World Series. The Washington Nationals own incredible ace Max Scherzer to go with hot bats including Trea Turner, Wilson Ramos, Bryce Harper and Jayson Werth. The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a big turnaround in the second half of the season thanks to big hitters like Adrian Gonzalez and Corey Seager along with ace Clayton Kershaw. These guys will make legendary broadcaster Vin Scully have a final season to remember. The San Francisco Giants are slowly turning to the opposite of a threat winning just 25 games since the All-Star break, but Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto are a dynamic duo for when it comes to pitching and the New York Mets are dominating with guys like Yoenis Cespedes and Jay Bruce. Last but not least, the Cubs. They have won more than 100 games this year with big hitters like Bryzzo (Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo), Dexter Fowler, Ben Zobrist, David Ross and Addison Russell. They also have very dominant pitchers from Jake Ar- rieta, Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester to Aroldis Chapman.

Can the Cleveland Indians defeat these monstrous teams to win the team’s first World Series since 1948?

School Tailgate Party Successful By: Isabelle George

A few of you may know of the tailgate party that the Highland PTO hosted on the 7th of September, for the 8th grade foot- ball game against. About 100 students attended the fundrais- er. It started off in the gym, where students played games such as cornhole and a foot- ball toss. Five students won prizes in the aforementioned football toss: William Scavuzzo, Carson Lavandowski, Bella Delfino, Noah Beers, and Nathan Agnew. The stu- dents then went to the cafe- teria, where snacks such as pizza and cookies were served. Later, they went to the old football field to watch the 8th grade game. Highland won 28- 12. Some of the highlights included when Alec Clark ran for three touchdowns, when Luke Stuart led the team in tackles, and when Nathan Meikle connected with Dylan Baun for a 75 yard touchdown pass. Overall, the party and game were huge successes, and on the 28th of September, there will be anoth- er-for the volleyball team. Hope to see you there!

Hurricane Matthew

By: Rahal Ramasamy

Hurricane Matthew roared into the southwest coast in Haiti on Tuesday. The storm threatened a large poor undeveloped country in the Caribbean with devastating storm conditions. Matthew was headed north to Cuba and the eastern coast of Florida. The dangerous storm hit land around the time the sun rose on Haiti on the southern coast. Many people that live in shacks of wood or concrete blocks could not stand the 145 mph winds. Hurricane Matthew caused significant damage. How much was not immediately known. Haiti officials tried to remove people from the most dangerous areas. Many hesitated to leave their land. Some had tried to find shelter after the worst of the storm had already happened.

10: The Jungle Book: This movie contains comedy, adventures, excitement, and talking ani- mals. This movie definitely deserved a spot on our list.

8: Finding Dory: This sequel of Finding Nemo gives watchers the chance to see Dory’s past and family. Definitely a family friendly movie.

7: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: This movie really brought DC fans excitement when they saw this trailer. This shows 6 different superheroes in the movie including Bat- man, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aqua-man, and Cyborg. This is definitely is a movie to see!

6: Pete's Dragon: This movie gives a lot of kids the dream of dragons in “real life” and gives the dragon (aka Elite) invisibility and fire breath. I recommend this to anybody who likes movies.

5: Zootopia: This movie allows kids to know that they can be whatever they want no matter who or what they are.

4: Kubo and the Two Strings: This movie is a great movie! It has adventure, action, and suspense!

Geeks, like me are really excited for this movie! 2: X-Men: Apocalypse: This movie the X-men have to face the first and most powerful mutant ever. It will not be easy for the X-men to take him down.

In trailers and interviews, the team teased all of the features of the game that were all taken out of the full ver- sion. No one knows how they did it. From different types of ships, to planet types, to the center of the universe itself, they removed it all. The community though, has started theories. The game was first thought to be priced at $15, and was to be sold on Steam (PC) only. But over the course of development, they gained so much hype that they took control of all of the fans and added beta versions of features that weren’t to be finished in the final game on all of the trailers and inter- views. The features were so plenty by then, that they bumped up the price to $60 and made a PS4 edition. Then they made sudden delays to remove them, so that the game was only worth $15 again. On release, millions of people protested that bought the game all over the Steam website. The hatred only grew, so much that the devel-
