Without vital Net Neutrality protections and the ability to enforce them, the Internet will cease to be a public platform for free speech, equal opportunity, economic growth and innovation. Instead, companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast, which have a commercial incentive to limit the free-flowing Web, will decide whose voices are heard.     WINTER 2009 IU Indianapolis LAW Alumni Magazine & Dean’s Report Defending the Homeland: Counter-terrorism and the Law INDIANA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW – INDIANAPOLIS Message from the Dean I AM PLEASED TO PRESENT THE WINTER ISSUE of the IU Law–Indianapolis Alumni Magazine and Dean’s Report. The fall semester has been a busy one at the law school, as this magazine attests. In the following pages, you will read about the groundbreaking counter-terrorism simulation that took place at the school in October as part of Professor Shawn Boyne’s Seminar in National Security Law. During the simulation, students played the roles of government officials responding to simulated terrorist attacks across the country and right here in Indianapolis. In January, WFYI, the local PBS affiliate, will air a documentary about this event. The magazine also includes information about the new legal clinic in Eldoret, Kenya, that our school has helped to establish and continues to support. I had the honor of visiting the clinic in October and am in awe of what has been accomplished there in a very short time. You will also read about and see photos of the recent Board of Visitors Reception at the school, hosted by law school alumnus, and former U.S. Vice President, Dan Quayle. We had a packed house for the event that brought many friends back to the school to visit and reminisce. I also want to take a moment to remember our beloved Professor Mary Harter Mitchell, whose sudden and untimely passing in November of this year leaves a tremendous void in our law school family.

Colin Powel, the first African American appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State, instructed, “Have a vision. Be demanding.” We have demanded a great deal to bring the vision for our students into focus. With a firm financial foundation in place, we have been able to erect beautiful, green facilities that have enhanced programs and student learning across all three divisions. The Tiger Center provides the educational resources that we have come to expect from a world class fitness center. The construction of the Black Box Theater has already enriched our performing arts program in the upper school. By moving upper school classrooms into the new buildings, we have been able to expand our middle and lower school facilities. The middle school, now with a stronger educational culture and identity, extends vertically over four floors. Like the middle school, the lower school is now characterized by its customized, dedicated learning spaces. A growth in space means a growth in programs. Most impressive is the introduction of a middle school competitive sports program. This comprehensive competitive sports program prepares our students to be capable athletes and gracious competitors at the upper school level and in life. Our programs continue to excel in other areas as well. Public speaking, serves as an example of program excellence that has grown for TAS students.

    THE WISCONSIN SURVEY - Spring 2002 http://www.snc.edu/survey/report_twss02.html THE WISCONSIN SURVEY Survey Information: Survey Sponsors: Wisconsin Public Radio and St. Norbert College Survey Methodology: Random statewide telephone survey of Wisconsin residents. The random digit dial method selects for both listed and unlisted phone numbers. Eight attempts were made on each telephone number randomly selected to reach an adult in the household. Survey History: the survey has been conducted biannually since 1984. Data Collection Time Period: 3/20/02 - 4/7/02 N = 407 Error Rate: 4.864% at the 95% confidence level. The margin of error will be larger for subgroups. Key Findings: According to the Wisconsin Public Radio - St. Norbert College Survey Center poll, if the general election were held today, Governer McCallum would be ahead of Democratic or third party contenders in hypothetical election pairings of candidates. However, in the race between McCallum and Doyle, the percentage lead McCallum has over Doyle is within the margin of error of the survey. In other words, there is no statistically significant difference between the two candidates. In the hypothetical pairings of McCallum against the other Democratic Party candidates, McCallum appears to be well ahead. Another indicator of sentiment for the candidates is the "favorable" and "unfavorable" ratings. Here, Doyle rates the highest, with 36% of respondents saying they had a favorable impression of him, compared to McCallum's 31%. Similarly, only 18% of respondents said they had an unfavorable opinion of Doyle compared to 35% of respondents saying they had an unfavorable opinion of McCallum. So, why is there no significant difference in the polls between McCallum and Doyle when Doyle seems to be more highly esteemed? More people have not heard of Doyle than McCallum and those who have not heard of Doyle are likely to vote for McCallum.
