Hearing God

The young man had lost his job and didn’t know which way to turn, so he went to see the old Preacher.

Pacing about the Preacher’s study, the young man ranted about his problem. Finally he clenched his fist and shouted, “I’ve begged God to say something to help me. Tell me, Preacher, why doesn’t God an- swer?’

The old Preacher, who sat across the room, spoke something in reply—something so hushed it was indistinguishable.

The young man stepped across the room. “What did you say?” he asked.

The Preacher repeated himself, but again in a tone as soft as a whisper. So the young man moved closer until he was leaning on the Preacher’s chair. “Sorry,” he said. “I still didn’t hear you.”

With their heads bent together, the old Preacher spoke once more. “God sometimes whispers,” he said, “so we will move closer to hear Him.”

This time the young man heard and he understood. We all want God’s voice to thunder through the air with the answer to our problem. But God’s is the still, small voice...the gentle whisper.

Perhaps there’s a reason. Nothing draws human focus quite like a whisper. God’s whisper means I must stop my ranting and move close to Him, until my head is bent together with His. And then, as I listen, I will find my answer. Better still, I find myself closer to God.

The Thoughts of God

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are…My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

In giving us His promises of what He will work in us, God reminds us that, as high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are His thoughts above ours — altogether beyond our power of spiritual understanding.

When He tells us that we are made in His image, that by grace we are renewed again into that image, and that as we gaze upon God’s glory in Christ, we are changed into the same image, these are indeed thoughts higher than the heavens. When He told Abraham of all the mighty work He would do in him and his descendants, this again is a thought higher than the heavens. Our human minds cannot take it in. When God calls us to love Him with all our hearts and promises to renew our hearts so that we will love Him with all our strength, here again is a thought out of the very heights of heaven. And when the Father calls us to a life in the light of His countenance, and rejoicing in His name all day long, this is a gift out of the very depths of God’s heart of love.

We ought to have deep reverence, humility, and patience while we are waiting for God to impart to our hearts, by His Holy Spirit, the life and light that can make us feel at home with these thoughts. What great faith is needed to believe that God not only will reveal the glory of these thoughts, but also will so mightily work in us that their divine reality and blessing will fill our inner most beings!

Think of what Isaiah said, as quoted by Paul: “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10). When Christ promised His Disciples that the Holy Spirit would come from heaven to dwell with them, He said that the Spirit would fill us with the light and life of the heavenly world. In this way, Christ and the purposes of God — which are higher than the heavens are above the earth – were made their abiding experience. Dear reader, seek to realize that every day the Holy Spirit will fill your heart with the thoughts of God in all their heavenly power and glory. P AGE 8 T HE Z ION T RUMPET

Four (4) Steps to Achieving an All-Cash Diet

Every diet has its secrets. The same is true of spending plans. If you are changing your financial habits to cut back on high-APR credit cards in favor of more crunchy green stuff, a wallet- slimming debit card or other pay-it now option, here are four steps to ease your transition:

1. Go cold turkey or take baby steps—depending on your financial situation, you may need to go all cash at once. Such is the case when you enter bankruptcy or attempt a debt-management plan. If not, ask yourself if you’d do better to change entirely to cash only or gradually increase your use of cash over plastic. “Subtle changes over time become a habit,” says Sheryl Garrett, a Certified Financial Planner and founder of the Garrett Planning Network in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. 2. Before you start, track your spending—divide expenses between bills you must pay— mortgage, phone, electric—from “wants” such as entertainment, cable TV and gifts. Factor in monthly set-asides for sporadic expenses such as quarterly insurance premiums or back-to- school clothes. Also, don’t forget the emergency fund, which you can use instead of plastic for truly unexpected expenses. Without coming to terms with your spending, your cash only plan could easily fail. 3. Decide what forms of ‘cash’ to spend—once you map out where your money goes, figure out the right mix of “pay-for-it-now” methods - cash, checks, debit cards or electronic pay- ments—to cover monthly bills and one time costs. For example, some all cash spenders might automate certain regular bills, finding it simplifies life. Or, they might use a debit card while shopping at the mall for the added security. 4. Have a safety valve—either put enough money in a savings account or keep a credit card close by for use in a crisis. Says Garret, “Treat it as sacred.” -Dana Dratch

From The Office Staff April will begin an emotional and inspirational time in our lives, which begins with Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. What a celebration that was for the people who laid down their cloaks and small branches of trees in front of Him and sang part of Psalm 118: 25–26 – ... Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord ....Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Then there is the heart break of Good Friday. On this day, Christians commemorate the passion or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ. Many Christians spend this day fasting, praying, repenting, and meditating on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross.

Let us take a moment and think of that time, of the pain and suffering He endured. Are we living as if the Son died for our sins? Do we love one another?

Take another moment and remember how God gave the ultimate sacrifice for our sins — His only Begotten Son. He loves us and forgives us daily. Let us do likewise.

May we celebrate the risen, true and living Saviour, Jesus Christ. May our lives show this Son shining in us, around us and from us.

Be Blessed this Easter Season.
